A pick up upgrade is the biggest improvement you can make to a guitars sound so if you like the way it feels then its worth doing IMO.

Okay thanks alot guys. And yeah if the guitar breaks or something I can just shove the pickup in my Squier.

Setting it flat would be a challenge. You'd have to add some springs or tighten the screw, and even then it would be at an angle. Lowering the screw will mess with the action. Looks like the quarters are the only way to go

The wiring definitely was a challenge to fit in there. I remember we don't want to route any more wood out, so I had I work with what we had! Luckily it all fit in there. Underneath the board, it's relatively clean.

Hi guys, so I'm starting work on my first guitar project in a week and wanted to ask your guys opinion on the order when making the body....I have my alder blank and a full acrylic template so this is the order I have in mind.....

1.) Stick template to blank with double sided tape
2.) Bandsaw rough shape as close to template as possible.
3.) Sand down as much excess as possible
4.) Guided bearing bit to finish edge
5.) Route pickup cavities
6.) Route neck pocket
7.) Transfer template to the other side of the body
8.) Route kill switch cavity & battery cavity
9.) Remove template and roundover edges
10.) Spokeshave contours

I know these are quite breif points for what effectively is a lo of work but just wanted your opinion on doing things in that order?

Thanks as ever for the help

From what I've been doing so far, I can't confirm this is correct or the best way rather but here's what I would do it in.

0.) Prep the body
Make sure it's planed to the right thickness now and has two good sides to work on. Most usually is but this is normally a small concern when you have glued some blanks together and there is a slight discrepancy.

1.) Stick template to blank with double sided tape
I actually used a screwed in template using screws placed in the pickup and neck join which will be routed out at a later point/covered up by droptop but it's your call. Many people use double sided tape, I'm just more scared than most

2.) Bandsaw rough shape as close to template as possible.
If you have one, yes, do this to get as much excess off as you can safely. I used a jigsaw, carefully.

3.) Guided bearing bit to finish edge
I swapped 4 and 3 around but that's kind of vague. Basically, do what you need to get the desired shape. Use a bit/guide that allows a very, very tiny excess for any tear out or mishaps that happen. Remember that in most cases, the less work the router has to do, the cleaner the edge will be. You will need to make a number of passed.
For example, I've done 3 passes on my body but I need to do the glued on drop top still which will be scary since it's spalted maple so I'm up to here but I also need to finish my custom neck before making a template for the neck

4.) Sand down as much excess as possible
By this I mean do a soft sand on a spindle sander once it's cut to smooth out any bits sorted by the routing. Again, use your best judgement here.

5.) Remove template and roundover edges
Now this is where my opinion comes in, and my reasoning for using a screwed in template. I find that it is probably cleaner and easier to do the rounding over before cutting the neck pocket and cavities. I may be wrong here but I feel it will make a neater looking cut at the neck pocket which reminds me...

6.) Route pickup cavities
7.) Route neck pocket
8.) Transfer template to the other side of the body
9.) Route kill switch cavity & battery cavity

You can do these all now with what order you would like. I normally like to apply my templates with clamps here since I never seem to get on with double sided tape

10.) Spokeshave contours
You can probably get away with doing this last or with number five, your pick.

James and I are working on a new project! Bringing this Parker back to life. I think the original mods were done by Hoogle, very nice finish

We are refretting the neck, new sperzel locking tuners, new wilkinson bridge, complete rewire, new pickups (Pearly Gates neck, Custom Custom bridge).

So far the board has been planed and fretted. The radius was all over the place, at a 22"+ in some areas! Just some photos of work along the way and the fretting process.

I also experimented with a throw away nut. I sanded the bone and stained it black, then buffed it. Almost has this marble look to it.

cool, though i would have loved an ebony board

what's the radius supposed to be on this one? will it end up close to that when you're finished?

and there's also going to be an aluminiumiumnu scratch plate.

and that nut actually looks sort of cool
