Matt Bellamy Believes In Performance

Matt Bellamy Believes In Performance

Quote:
Muse frontman Matt Bellamy takes his songs seriously when performing them but admits he can struggle to relate to the lyrics when listening back to his records.
Matt Bellamy only "believes" his songs when he is performing them.
The Muse singer is known for his fascination with space and other-worldly themes but admits he struggles to relate to his own lyrics when listening to the band's music.
He said: "I love the music. A lot of people have picked up on some of it being tongue-in-cheek.
"But to me it's only tongue-in-cheek when I'm listening to it. When I'm playing it, I believe it man. I'm in there. I mean, 'Knights of Cydonia', I'm going with it into these strange emotions. So I can only assume people get that feeling too.
"But, I have to say, sometimes when I listen to our music or I hear it in the distance, I go, 'Is that actually the band I'm in?' "
Muse are currently preparing for their headline slot at the Reading and Leeds festivals in August, where they will play their 2001album 'Origin of Symmetry' in its entirety, but the group admit it isn't sounding as good as they hoped in rehearsals.
Bassist Chris Wolstenholme told Q magazine: "It's alright. We ran through 'Hyper Music' for the first time in seven years. It sounded like a school band cover of 'Hyper Music' to be honest."

Is this in Q magazine? I can't remember.

Hmm yeah it uses extracts from the Q Interview.
Wonder if the Hyper Music cover really does sound like a school band cover...

You really thought that after almost 10 years, they would be able to play Hyper Music as if it was nothing? And you thought Muse don't need to rehearse songs?

they couldn't even do Hyper Music particularly well 10 years ago.

To be fair, the fact that they're willing to admit this pretty freely and casually in interviews shows that they aren't that worried about it yet, so we shouldn't be either. They've got plenty of time to make it sound great.

MTE. I mean, even songs they've never stopped playing sound immensely different from 2001 to now. It's pretty much a given that something like Hyper Music will sound nothing like it did back then. And yeah, they've got nearly two months to work it up. As long as it sounds great I've no problem at all if it doesn't sound like it did back then, nor am I expecting it to.

Of course that is exactly what my post says.

Jesus Christ, no need to get all defensive, all I said was them feeling negative about Hyper Music doesn't make me too positive either. Don't know what you're going on about.

And for the record, 7 years is not close to 10.

Unfortunately, as excited as I am for the OOS performances, I feel like they're doomed to be a bit of a disappointment. I think the songs on that album are really driven by an angsty and raw side of Muse that no longer exists. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt we'll ever see anything like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mleNDcgRVyU again.

Honestly, I thought it was going to be like that as well. Micro Cuts shouldn't be too bad considering they played it at Wembley 2007. They played Megalomania twice I think in Russia, so that should be ok. The only other ones that they didn't rehearse I think are Space Dementia, Darkshines, and Screenager. I think the vocals are going to be lighter in Darkshines and Hyper Music.
