Structurally Drones is so much what I'd expect the fanbase to come up with as an album. Just needs piano songs.

I've been listening to the latest (2016) Soulwax album a lot lately and pretty much every song is the same idea musically, an electronic bass driving dancey bouncy electro synth rock. The vocals are delivered in pretty much the same way throughout the album, apart from the instrumental tracks. I'd say musically some of the tracks are at least as similar as Madness and Dig Down are.

And yet -apart from the instrumental opening track- nothing about it annoys or bores me, nothing feels stale. The whole thing makes me want to dance. Maybe because, while the sound is somewhat retro and hardly original, it doesn't sound like a bad copy of songs I already know from other artists? Maybe because it's not presented as something pompous or ambitious? Or does it have to do with my expectations?

Either way, I don't know what it is, but they pulled of a cohesive, enjoyable album that is never groundbreaking, but very enjoyable. I wonder how Muse, in their quest to be original, are accomplishing the opposite.

Anyway, long rant without much of a point. I really want Soulwax to produce a Muse album. That would be amazing.

Yeah that was my thinking. Just thought that maybe due to their contract with WM that they were obligated to make more commercial music, or try to be more commercially successful anyway.

Guess that theory is out the window then. Maybe they just like being 'sellouts' more than making good and meaningful music.

The only thing that bothers me is that the song is totally not original in any way. I mean, I still enjoy it (feels like I'm the only one though), but it really doesn't bring anything new.

I mean, I think it's decent, but...

And, well, I think that lately the band needs a lyricist. Sorry, Matt, but Muse's lyrics never clicked on me generally.

Muse and hip hop influences? It worked well with Arctic Monkeys and their AM.. although I'm beginning to lose faith (pun not intended) in Matt's artisitc sense. Alex Turner managed to write 7 albums and 2 EPs and everything on them was fresh. Not to mention the lyrical superiority when comparing to Matt's efforts since BHAR.

I was thinking of bringing up AM, but figured Alex Turner and Matt Bellamy are probably worlds apart in terms of what they'd use when it comes to hip-hop influences.

Commercially, definitely, but AM was easily their worst record imo. Not that that necessarily means anything with regards to Muse. As for his lyrics, Alex's are miles better than Matt's from any era tbf. Muse have made some top albums but the lyrics rarely go above 'decent', apart from maybe on Abso.

He only said beats when he mentioned hip hop influences tbf and, like I said, his definition of that probably doesn't stray far from what we've already seen on Madness and UD.

Would be surprised to see it do well (if at all) in the charts here in the UK.

While I agree that AM was their worst record, it was still good. Most importantly it felt fresh and original.

As for the lyrics - Abso had some great lyrics but so did OoS era. I still get shivers listening to Megalomania, Space Dementia, CE or even Shine. But true, Turner is consistent lyrically. Hell, in my honest opinion he is the best lyricist alive.

I like Turner, but not the best alive. Dylan is still breathing. As for someone still putting out great music, Nick Cave is up there. This is excluding rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Aesop Rock.

Edit: also John Darnielle from The Mountain Goats.

- europe tour 2018
- they wanna release a new song every 3-4 months
- new album influenced by "burning man festival", many songs with EBM elements and Hiphop beats

Looks like the album will be pure shit.
Maybe we can expect like a Radiohead's amnesiac. Why not?

Ohh I did just kill Bob Dylan didn't I? True, nonetheless I respect Turner greatly and even if 'best alive' is an exaggeration, he's surely up there among the best. I might check some Nick Cave's songs.

I'm not into Rap really, apart from some Eminem tunes from my childhood :P He had some great songs with good lyrics back in the days; Stan, Lose Yourself or Sing for the Moment.
I quite enjoyed Graduation from Kanye though, not sure what people make of him nowadays, musically.

Because if you listen to Amnesiac you won't find a song nearly as horrible as Dig Down.

I'm pretty sure the thinking going into Drones was, "alright let's please the hardcore fanbase now, then we can continue doing music we want to do and hopefully they won't whinge."

Of course that line of thinking fails, because now the diehards are expecting more hard rock. Then you drop a synthpop track and they become convinced the band has sold out etc.

Linkin Park did pretty much the same thing. After edging towards more electronic and subdued territory for a few albums, they went full heavy metal for an album. Now they've "suddenly" gone pop and people are losing their shit.

Mike explained it pretty well though. They were just sick of playing the same hard-rock style of music, so the change was necessary for keeping enthusiasm alive in the band, even if it makes some fans unhappy. I imagine Muse are in a similar position.
