There are a few, Escape for example.

Could be that. I mean, UD for example is a song about love/sex but feels very cold and distant. It's a great track and I love the production on it, but that sort of coldness replicated all through the album starts to seep through. I think Exogenesis is full of emotion, though, but then again it is the heart of the album.

I think there has been an issue with Muse-of-late with some lack of emotion. I mean, many of their critics/"haters" tend to cite a lack of heart and soul as one of the reasons they dislike the band. In a way I get it. Often even many of the emotional tracks are performed with focus on technical brilliancy and showmanship (Stockholm Syndrome comes to mind) that there is an emotional gap sometimes to be felt. That is one reason I'm such a champion of tracks like Falling Down being a part of the set list, they feel more humane.

I feel lack of emotion only in The Resistance though.

I feel it on parts of T2L, too. Like Follow me sounds hollow to me, although it is supposed to be one of the most personal tracks.Supremacy is grand, but it doesn't really at the end of the day evoke any emotion. I mean, I was just looking at the Brit awards performance finally in HD and was in awe of the performance as a great performance/the virtuosity and/or stern professionalism that left little-to-no room for mistakes. I wasn't moved by it in any way, however.

T2L as a whole seems like a step in the right direction, however.

The thing is that Muse have balanced emotion(imo ofc) and professionalism or showmanship or whatever you wanna call it really well before. Like you mentioned, SS is a great example.

That's why I feel that TR lacks energy and and life, so many of the tracks just sound dead emotionally. Which obviously doesn't mean that they ARE dead emotionally, "emotional" singing is usually just some shaky vibrato and not cleanly hit notes anyway.

I kinda agree. Which is why I don't fancy Supremacy all that much. Follow Me is saved by the amazing vocals(on a technical level) and heavy drop though. Hey, sometimes production DOES make the music.

I'm actually glad that they're not too emotional and personal

Of course, every song is personal. But they're not as personal as some other bands/songs.

Well of course there are always more extreme cases, but by Muse standards, T2L have some of their most personal songs. Problem is I can't feel it.

And feeling the songs was what got me into Muse, despite not really bothering to understand the lyrics unless they're in my face. Even songs like Apocalypse Please, Butterflies & Hurricanes and Ruled By Secrecy with their not so personal lyrics felt more alive than all of The Resistance.

The Resistance seems like an album they 'just did'. It seems to me that most of the songs were made for the sake of having more songs on the album.
Someone mentioned a similarity between Led Zeppelin IV with Stairway and TR with ExoGenesis. IV really suffered as almost all the studio time was spent on Stairway. I think It was the same with Exo. Exo has so much effort put into it and clearly sticks it head above the rest of the album. But the rest of the album seems like it was made to avoid releasing only an EP so they just fucked around with a few songs (MK Ultra, IBTY, US) and made 2/3 pop songs so the album would sell (Resistance, Uprising)

On the other hand T2L has far more effort put into each song (Possibly because they wrote on the road unlike TR) While a few songs are lacking (Sippe mentioned Follow Me) far more songs sound like they put their all into them.

I think they did. I remember an interview where Matt and/or Dom mentioned that they were writing on this tour (TR Tour) unlike the last one (BH&R tour).

Hmm. I thought I heard Dom say just the opposite. That they had not worked on anything at all on the road because they wanted to close the book on what they were touring on, and start with something fresh when it was all over...
