Muse opened for fricking System of a Down in the States once and didn't do anything heavier than SS, B+H and MotP. I can't really see this festival being any different.

*edit - LOL it was Rage Against the Machine, oops*

Was it actively a hard rock/metal festival?

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/n...tival-20110801 - more of a special one-time thing event but that article even mentions that Lauryn Hill beefed up her performance to suit the other acts on the bill.

I admittedly don't know (or care) a thing about Carolina Rebellion, but they booked Def Leppard to headline last year. Clearly there's a precedent there for cheese.

SOAD didn’t play LA Rising, unless you mean something else? Either way, there obvs wasn’t a heavy rock theme to that show - it was just set up by RATM to include acts they liked or were similar-ish.

Carolina Rebellion is pretty much just like Download by the sound of it. You get exactly the same cheesy hard rock/hair metal bands playing there but it’s still a heavy festival. Whether or not Muse’ll take that into account in the same way or even know idk but, in theory, there’s no reason for them not to.

I wonder why they picked that particular festival when the south and Midwest are just lousy with those kind of rednecky rock festivals all summer and many of the bands in the lineup do multiple ones.
Or why they picked that type of festival at all. Poor research?

SOAD, RATM... Lord, I need a nap.

I really do hope they dust off Dead Star, Assassin, New Born etc. at this show, but.. it is America. At least maybe they can relate to Incubus who are also performing on the same day. There's another band who have adapted a sound that I wouldn't expect a lot of hard rock/metal fans to fully embrace anymore.

Its still quite something they soundchecked Micro Cuts and Citizen Erased at that LA gig with RATM, then instead gave them Undisclosed Desires and Resistance. Though they did seem to get away with it.

Would absolutely love it (and not put it past them) to just rock up and have no clue.

Think I said on the last page that I imagine they’ll avoid going too deep w/ any heavier cuts if they do change it up, particularly anything pre-Abso. Of the hits/staples, they’re fine keeping Psycho, Thought Contagion, Handler, Supermassive, Hysteria, TIRO, Knights, Uprising and potentially even Mercy and Dead Inside. Dig Down might be a stretch but I can see them gambling and keeping it. Then just fill out the other 5-8 slots with anything from: Reapers, Stockholm, Butterflies, Map, Supremacy, Globalist, TAB, New Born, Agitated/Yes Please, Animals, Unnatural Selection or maybe CE. Micro Cuts/Dead Star/Assassin might have a slim chance but I’d put those songs way above first.

It’s not unheard of for them to soundcheck songs they’re not even considering playing that night though tbf. Plus, the OOS gigs were just around the corner back then.

True. Earliest example that I can think of is a rumour of Dead Star and Hyper Music being soundchecked at various points on the 2006 Black Holes arena tour.

The Nashville soundcheck got a few of the songs that made the SBE gig, right?

songs that will crash and burn: mercy, starlight, undisclosed and dead inside... and madness

i've been doing some research on the crowd of this festival now that i've committed to going. they really hate that muse is headlining. they don't think muse is good. they don't think muse is heavy. that said, i think a well-crafted set can make true believers out of haters.
  1. unsustainable
  2. interlude/hysteria
  3. thought contagion
  4. showbiz
  5. isolated system into stockholm with micro cuts outro
  6. reapers (full)
  7. d&b jam
  8. the handler
  9. supermassive
  10. dead star
  11. time is running out
  12. fury
  13. uprising
  14. citizen erased
  15. assassin (grand omega bosses)
  16. knights

bottom line this needs to be a heavy set. this is not going to be crossing over metal-y people into pop. this is going to be convincing people with really low expectations of muse that this band is the best in the world.

Even markets that have old school rock stations still play stuff like Incubus, which has never really been heavy. Muse doesn't have to break out Assassin to be relevant for the crowd there, tbh.
And Mercy's pretty great when you're drunk at a gig, especially if they do confetti.

mercy will only work if half steps become quarter steps and the confetti is made of spiders and blood here. these are drunk rednecks weíre dealing with... camo shorts and beer bellies and trucker hats... youíre over estimating the power of confetti lol

also, i want to hear assassin because i havenít before and i have heard mercy. i need mercy from mercy. this isnít about radio trends; itís about lying the snare within people that wrote off the band. why should muse go with a general set because incubus is there? muse is the headliner and shouldnít adjust their set because all of incubus sounds like an extended bong hit.
