On a slightly more positive note I like Dom's palm tree suit.

But yeah. The amount of non-live stuff is taking the piss.

I don't mind playback backing vocals, though it's a a bit shameful, because Matt is getting old - no escaping from it. Although in my opinon they should just change the way they play some songs. Lower key etc. Even if they sound different - it will be more genuine.

Now, NKOK is unacceptable and unforgivable.

There is no excuse for playback. None at all. If you can't make the songs work live, don't play them. Otherwise, adapt them - that's the whole point, it's LIVE music. You're not there for a recital of the album versions.

Backing tracks, fine, in certain songs - i.e. Bliss and the Hysteria bass. But when half the song is playback (which is what Dig Down sounds like), you have a serious problem.

Yeah it just seems like insecurity because they wanna keep their reputation as a great live band.

Insecurity sounds right. It's also things like dubbing the final note on Survival on the Rome DVD, it's just pathetic and unnecessary.

Muse's biggest problem as a live band, IMO, is that Matt is trying to be the frontman AND the full time, only guitarist. I think what they need to do is have a full time guitarist so that Matt can be free to roam the stage and be a frontman (which he obviously wants to do anyway), and then just have Matt play the guitar solos and some of his more signature parts.

I wouldn't say it's their biggest problem but yeah I've also had that thought. Not only to allow Matt to be lazy, but to add a dimension to a stagnating band by having two guitars. But that might just be my love for several guitars doing counter-melodies.

Except that would be utterly, utterly horrific.

Muse coped perfectly well as a three-piece until 2005, and as a perfectly good four-piece until 2009/10. Then it all started going wrong.

The essence of what made Muse's live show the best has been lost. It wasn't all about the 'show', it was about the virtuoso performance. The way Matt used to just strut to the front of the stage and unleash that tapping solo in New Born, or the extended bits in B&H live, or the build-up in Take A Bow, or the increasingly ridiculous Sunburn piano solo. THAT was impressive and exciting live.

Vague, half-arsed, shitty theatrics and stadium show cliché is just awful - and they're absolutely terrible at it.

EDIT: to podiumboy.

Yeah, I agree with that. I should replace the "not only" in my post with "not". Matt dropping the parts that made them stand out as a live band (the piano-guitar switch in New Born, the guitar solo in Blackout etc) is just sad. But I wouldn't mind if Morgan just kept doing his parts ans that Matt started writing songs with him in mind. Two guitars (could have Morgan on bass), or just more guitar+piano combos like the good old days. The piano has been seriously lacking in general. Someone needs to remind Matt that it isn't just for ballads.

What the fuck happened? Seeing the setlists, what the fuck happened? I thought they still weren't bad at 2013, the 2015 festival set was absolutely nuts and even the Drones arena tour gig was alright, at least we got motp and tab.

What the actual fucking shit are these setlists? Or is it once again the guys disliking NA for some reason?

They've always disliked the US. Our sets were always shorter, we seldom got old songs and when we did Matt gave a speech about how none of us knew the songs or saw the band live before TR (which was the only time he talked to the crowd,) and he badmouthed the US fans to other fans (and on French interviews.)
They wanted to keep playing the same size gigs in the US as the UK, instead of understanding the market here and working to gain a dedicated fanbase, and they just keep making a string of bad decisions.

The playback and downtime, as well as set length, have increased to an insane degree, though, and I'm willing to bet a lot of that sticks around for the UK gigs this time.
15 songs for a gig with a festival stage and tickets that cost double the main tour last year is just mindblowing.

The band was quickly devolving from an amazing live band to an amazing spectacle, but this is something even I didn't expect.

They (or Matt, at least) actually seemed to have fun over the last two gigs, these are just the songs they think they 'should' play in the US. It's pretty much the same as the US Drones gigs, just with two less songs (the piano slot and the JFK+____ slot).

Edit: Oh, also, apparently Matt said no to a fan who brought a Fury sign to the front. Not a surprise I guess but figured I'd post.

Now I wonder what fan would bring a sign that says Fury? Wonder if they're from Australia.
