Hoogle, how do you actually go about publicising your work? Just apart from your website and bits and pieces on forums, I cant say I've ever really seen you put stuff anywhere else? It appears like Alex is having such good fortune because he's made the right contacts and things are moving from there, maybe you should do the same? Have you tried contacting artists with examples of your work? I vaguely recall (could be wrong) that a while ago you were in contact with a magazine or something, anything come from that? I think just little bits of publicity here and there might do you some good, even if its just in a newspaper.

Might be worth you talk to Alex about it behind the scenes, get some advice from him about it.

Just my tuppence.

Cant be arsed getting in an argument with you Jimbo because you bore me, but you do seem very quick to criticise Alex on the minutest of details. You seem to have picked up on all sorts here that nobody gives a flying fuck about, but seem very quick to praise everyone else. If a string tree potentially covering a slight miniscule portion of his logo is enough for you to get your knickers in a twist about, why wasnt the pickguard/control knob issue on Hoogles LP styles enough for you to pass out over? Maybe I'm the only one that it bothered, but the placement of the knobs and the shape of the pickguard (which made it clear it was an after thought) is as much of an issue, if not more, than the logo placement on Alex's.

Just my tuppence.

You weren't even offering constructive criticism, you just appeared to waste an hour of your life trying to find a little detail that's wrong with it, or that could be improved, and slate him for it. Congrats on that

Naturally you'll say "oh but for a professional luthier that JUST CAN'T HAPPEN, it's kind of a big deal". He's got time to learn, his work's only gonna get better from here

You were complaining about Alex being snarky at you the other day, so, that'd make you a hypocrite, no?
I gave Alex credit for turning his luthier business around, didn't I? I'm not being snarky, I'm being nitpicky about quality because that's how a lot of real-world customers will be, especially if they're paying top dollar. I am giving constructive criticism--I've had interaction with a lot of world-class luthiers and their work, so I'm trying to give Alex some pointers on how he can get his work on that level if that's what he wants. Believe me, it doesn't take an hour to find things that could be improved on, and will have to be if he wants to be on par with the best luthiers. It is kind of a big deal, because every detail of a custom build should be a big deal. Just because most people on here think Hugh Manson is the God of guitar-building and anything he does is perfect, doesn't mean everyone has room for improvement. Pointing out flaws isn't rude, it's just practical--better to have me do it now than an important customer later.

You may not give a flying fuck, but you're also not really the best about being interested in boutique, luthier-built instruments, Mr. Encore Neck. Just because you don't care how Alex applies his logo or what covers it doesn't mean an actual customer of his won't. Maybe Eric didn't, but as Alex grows as a luthier, if he keeps making mistakes like that, someone's going to complain and he's going to get a bad rap. Forgive me if the knob on Hoogle's guitar didn't bother me as much, because it had a practical reason to be there so you could use it with your pinky finger to create volume swells. There's no aesthetic value to having part of your logo covered by a string tree, therefore it's a worse mistake. Sorry if I'm boring you with all of this haute couture luthiery talk

Your insults are so childishly predictable Why don't you do something interesting like call me a "fucking nob of a Jamie" for once?

Edit: I don't understand why everyone's so butt-hurt pver this. I'm not trying to cut Alex down, I'm just trying to help him out. His guitars aren't yet of the quality they could be, nor what he seems to think they are compared to guitars like Mansons, Suhrs, Andersons, Elliotts, etc--but they could be, so I'm trying to give him some comments with those guitars and luthiers in mind that will help him achieve that sort of quality. For example, a guitar with the logo misplaced or even partially covered wouldn't have even left the factory from any of those builders. Maybe it isn't really a huge big deal, but if he wants to get on par with any of those, it's something he'll have to pay more attention to. Just sayin'

Again with the "big deal" thing? I mean, I know I'm a big deal, I really don't need you and Al's constant crooning to make me feel better about myself. I have girls to do that for me.

made it clear it was an afterthought?

in the sense that i designed it after the guitar then yes, ok. but in the sense that you mean it - as in, well, i suppose it should have one so that'll do - then i refute that completely.

i spent a good couple of hours tweaking that thing, making it fit in not only with that shape, but also with the rest of my range (compare it to the one on the 'holly' model). the fact that i havent just copied a les paul seems to really bother some people - someone on pg really had a go at me because the shape was "wrong" - and that wasnt just his opinion, it was a FACT.

also, the first volume knob is only 'too close' to the guard on the goldtop, and even then its not really a problem. on the burst it is not a problem at all, and before anyone had even mentioned it i had already adjusted my templates to move the controls 10mm or so further down.

I'm pretty sure I've said before in your thread about the pickguard thing so I cba repeating it. And I wasnt talking about the first volume knob or whatever, I was talking about the fact that theyre so massively spaced out. It looks nice but IN MY HUMBLE OPINION it would bother me...

And youre welcome for the other paragraph I posted giving you helpful friendly advice, which I presume you have simply not noticed.

This forum, I dont even.

Wha? Hoogle's just responding to some snarky comments you made about his luthiery, is that a sin? I don't see you making the same sort of nit-picky observations about Alex's work!

You, I don't even.
