I remember reading that. That transition though is really weird. I mean honestly it's one of the weirdest things they've done, this huge emotional type of track as an intro then you're aurally drained by the time you get into Starlight. I left out New Born because it sets the tone for the album, it's solid but as a "best opener" I don't know. It's tough to say. I think AP functions best although when you start looking at best written track #1 song then things change a bit.

TaB got my hopes unreasonably high for the rest of the album, so you could say it did it's job.

Favourite to least favourite:

1.) Sunburn
2.) New Born
3.) Dead Inside
4.) Take a Bow
5.) Apocalypse Please
6.) Supremacy
7.) Uprising

Best way to open album to least best way to open album:

1.) Take a Bow
2.) New Born
3.) Sunburn
4.) Uprising
5.) Dead Inside
6.) Apocalypse Please
7.) Supremacy

Both lists were very hard for me to do.

Fair enough, I wouldn't really describe Sunburn or Dead Inside as quite being 'quiet to intense' though. Sunburn's pretty much a standard verse-chorus-verse-chorus song and Dead Inside doesn't really build up to much.

For me, individual songs would be:

Take A Bow
Apocalypse Please
New Born
Sunburn
Uprising
Dead Inside
Supremacy

As album openers:

Take A Bow
New Born
Apocalypse Please
Uprising
Supremacy
Sunburn
Dead Inside

It was hard to say after the first two, to be honest. I think they're perfect openers. I like Dead Inside as an opener because I think the album just starting with "DEAD INSIDE" shouted at the listener before suddenly going calm is interesting and intriguing.

It's also know that TaB was written in the Absolution era, so as New Born's piano opening is a shout-out to Showbiz, TaB shouts out to Absolution, closing an era and opening a new with massively arpeggiating synths and massive vocal harmonies.

I love all of the tracks above and all are fantastic openers. For me though, the intensity of apocalypse please just takes it.

In order for me:
1) Apocalypse Please
2) Take a Bow
3) New born
4) Sunburn
5) Supremacy
6) Uprising
7) Dead Inside

As singular songs, New Born and Sunburn are miles ahead but this is about openers and as I see it, newborn and sunburn could be placed anywhere on their respective albums and still be heralded as great tracks. TAB and AP can, in my mind, only be used to open an album. Uprising falls under the same category as Newborn and Sunburn but is a more inferior track.

I can only judge dead inside as an opener against psycho (I'll wait until studio versions launch of reapers and mercy) and the others are in context of the whole albums. It's hard to place it anywhere so far.

Aww, no Sunburn love...

1. Sunburn
2. Apocalypse Please
3. Dead Inside
4. Take a Bow
5. Uprising
6. New Born
7. Supremacy

Never really got all that into New Born. Thought it was kinda boring. The solo sucks imo. I read someone describe Matt Bellamy on OoS as technically proficient but soulless in his playing and I thought that was kinda accurate. At least for New Born.

EDIT: Also this is really just how I think of them as songs. I didn't really think of them in the context of being openers. I guess Apocalypse Please is the best opener in that sense along with Uprising and New Born. They all just start kinda cool I guess. New Born still drags like crazy later on though.

Apocalypse Please
New Born
Supremacy
Dead Inside
Sunburn
Uprising
Take A Bow

I'm not a fan of Take A Bow as an opener, I thinks it's to do with the fact that having a song called Take A Bow at the beginning of an album is completely illogical and I simply can't look past that. It is an epic song though but to me Apocalypse Please is an awesome album opener

Purely as an opener and not based on song quality as individual songs:

Take a Bow
New Born
Supremacy
Uprising
Dead Inside
Apocalypse Please
Sunburn

as individual songs - Take a Bow, Uprising, New Born, Dead Inside, Sunburn, Apocalypse Please, Supremacy
