Sorry for bumping an old-ish thread, but I have a question.

I can't play the SS intro riff on one of my guitars, the string keeps getting caught on the pick.

Should I lower the action or adjust the intonation or something? (I can play it fine on my other guitar)

This guitar just buzzes and the string keeps getting in the way.

Thanks.

Sorry if this has been asked before

But Matt always plays it weird

For starters, he plays it (picking) close to the neck... IMHO that's quite a waste of energy, since the strings amplitude is greater there... I pick it more towards the bridge (but that makes it sound a bit more treble-ish)...

Second, he rests his hand (fingers) on one of his pickups. I know his joints are hyper flexible, so he seems to pick 'in-line' with the string, but it doesn't help me. Resting my hand on the bridge is somewhat more comfortable for me, but you can also pick it with your hand floating.

Third, his fretting fingers are lifted way to high above the string imho, it looks like he is 'hitting' the strings with his fretting hand, almost like a very hard hammer-on (but for that, you kinda bend your fingers more)...

So I personally don't think it's a good idea to adapt Matt's technique esp. for SS

My 2 cents

you may aswell use alternate picking, if you're just using down, then there's no reason as to why you shouldn't use the alternate method. think about it, every time you play a down stroke, you need to pull the plec back up in order to play the next down, so why not do an up-pick after the down.

This may already have been asked but I cant go through the whole thread!

In the tab book it says the "solo" is played:

Quote:
D:- 8-5-0-8-5-0-8-5-7-3-0-7-3-0-7-3-5-2-0-5-2-0-5-2-5-1-0-5-1-0-5-1
But on the American video he plays it differently, like up around the 12th fret ...

Huh?

Is this easier? Why does the tab book show it a different way? Thanks, btw.

I found from playing it on the deep D string up on the higher octave of the string that it gave a better sound, and u can bend the strings alot easyer which gives a good effect.. im guessing matt B might have though the same.. its also easyer as the frets are closer.. try it out and see which u prefer.. its basically the same as playing on the higher D string cuz its the ocatve above.. just gives a better effect to the lot

Its different though ... -0- on the low D string is obviously lower than -0- on the higher d string, so you're playing that last note 1 octave lower. It would have to be the 12th fret to get the same riff, and thats really hard to do...

yeah but thats your choice.. matt uses the lower D string.. it'll sound similar n e way cuz the solo is pretty fast.. I dno, i prefer playing it like he plays it live.. not how its written in the tab book.. I found quite a few weird things in the tab book to be honest which didnt make n e sense when I watch what MB plays live..

Stockholme syndrome question

Hi there,
I was just watching the american version of the SS video, and i noticed matt played alot of the song differently to how i play it, but the playing that was going of on that vid was pretty cool!
So basically do you know if he was just pretending to play or was that actually how he plays the song?
I play the intro riff & interlude/solo riff like this:
Code:
E-12-0-13-0-12-0-11-12--0-0-13-0-12-11-12-
thats all played on the E string, but i saw on the vid that he was doing something on the A string too? I just thought it would be pretty cool to play it a different way?

Cheers

I think Matt is doing a bit of guitar wankage in the video. SS *is* played on the bottom (D) string, but it obviously looks cooler in the video if you rest your finger on the A string during the solo.
