#6 Panic Station on Billboard Alternative Songs - Muse's tenth Top 10 track on this chart

Salt Lake City, UT rock radio stations have played it the most times last week followed by the station in Austin, TX. KROQ in LA has not yet given it heavy rotation but more than 50 alternative/modern rock stations are playing it.

The viewing audience for Muse's performance of Madness on Saturday April 6 on the CBS television network between the two NCAA Final Four college basketball games was around 14 million according to Nielsen numbers. The song climbed as high as #25 at iTunes on Saturday evening and most of Sunday. By comparison, 28 million watched Muse perform Uprising at the 2011 Grammy Awards on CBS and 40 million Americans heard excerpts of Uprising and MotP on NBC during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

Airplay for Madness increased about 5% last week peaking at 43 million audience impressions on Sunday according to Mediabase.

More Madness US chart info will be revealed on Thursday...

If Muse played live on TV and then the song clearly temporarily rose on the download chart after the performance, obviously there seems to be correlation. It certainly provides more an insight on WHY an increase in downloads happened than your gut feelings.

Of course you can compare events and their significance to sales, why couldn't you? It doesn't anyone mean was claiming their effect was identical, hence "compare".

Also, it is very rude and condescending to say "come on boy" to an adult, especially since their analysis has always been much more detailed and believable than yours.

No offence taken but I beg to differ. Madness re-entered the On-Demand Songs chart at #45 last week and there was only a small dip in sales (58k v 60k) compared with the prior week.

Live performances on national TV do impact sales even though the effects are transitory.

Exposure helps in music sales and tour ticket sales whether the performance was broadcast at an awards ceremony, sporting event, talk show or reality competition show. Many artists also have their music featured on commercials and there have almost always been measurable sales impacts as a result.

The point I wanted to make above:

Muse has performed live on American television in primetime on only three occasions:

2009 MTV Video Music Awards

2011 GRAMMY Awards on CBS

2013 NCAA Final Four on CBS

The band has also appeared on SNL twice on NBC but they played after midnight ET. They also accepted an AMA award on ABC in November 2010 but did not perform and on FOX a contestant performed a cover version of one of their songs in April 2011 on American Idol.
