My dad said that in Finland people of his generation aren't having as much swine flu as they had huge amounts of different flus going around when they were vunerable children, they were ill a lot as kids but now not a lot of that age group get swine flu, because their bodies still have that resistance even when that flu virus is different...

So, if I get it now, I'll get it. I don't think it'll be fun but I doubt I'll die either, it'd be terribly unlucky. I'll only worry about viruses if there's huge mutation in UK that is more deadly or has more long-term effects.

Aye it's all a numbers game. At the moment, going from total deaths and total population in the UK.

Chances of having any serious side effect from the vaccine are roughly 1 in 1000000

Chances of catching and dying of Swine Flu in the UK of current stats is 1 in 450000

Chances of getting complications with flu (potential long term lung damage, temporary bleeding out your mouth, nose, arse, genitals and ears and skin falling off the same places) is about 1 in 20000, though healthy people are at higher risk than those with underlying health conditions as they're caused by the immune system over-reacting to a new virus.

A lot of people with milder cases of Swine Flu are now catching the virus a second time around, showing immunity isn't common. WHO are saying one dose of vaccine provides full imunity, CDC are saying two provide full imunity. But with two doses the risk of side effects doubles.

----------

12 million Ukranians will get Swine Flu in the next few weeks according to the WHO assesment.

120,000 will require hospital treatment, 18,000 on intensive care and 9000 dead: http://www.kyivpost.com/news/nation/detail/51894/

http://www.kyivpost.com/news/nation/detail/51894/

Minister of Health is still saying there is no Swine Flu in the country despite over 500,000 confirmed cases. About the tenth time his changed his story now.

Well this is one of my thoughts, the body has it's own defences, it's good to be exposed to a certain amounts of germs/bugs to built up your resistance. I think I will wait and see how bad it gets in the UK and if it does mutate.

There was 2.5 million sick people during a month in 2007 and 2008. So no need to make such a fuss of it.
Yes, if you look at statistics carefully enough you realize how much it's blown out of proportion.

It's possible that things will get worse because of Ukraine's fucked up healthcare though, but it's a different matter.

Sadly it's the complete opposite, it's being underplayed around the world.

In Belarus 85 people have contracted Swine Flu, 31 of those are currently in hospital and 19 are already dead (roughly a quarter of those infected so far) so the impact is pretty huge: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/20...t_12394337.htm.

With normal flu 90% of those that die are over 65 or already seriously ill (i.e people who die from it were bound to die soon anyway just flu finfished them off quicker) so countried are relativly unscathed by it.

With Swine flu 90% of those that die are under 65 and perfectly healthy so it has a far greater impact on a nation. Around 20 to 30% of Ukrainians will be off work with Swine flu in the coming weeks and according to the WHO assessment and an incalculable number skyiving through fear of getting ill; which will put a major strain on essential services and an already fucked economy. Infection rates of just 10% in essential workers has been shown to cause collapse through Chaos Mathematics used in Pandemic models, currently 11% of health workers and 16% of armed forces are ill in the Ukraine.

Also a lot of deaths are being recorded as Secondary Pnumonia rather than Swine Flu despite people only contracting pnuemonia due to their immune system being temporarily weakened by catching Swine Flu so the true impact isn't seen.

News just in: The virus has gone through another mutation in Iowa and can now infect cats: http://www.cattlenetwork.com/H1N1-Fl...spx?oid=932004

Why do you say "Swine Flu" when the actual link you gave says "As many as 12 million people could contract flu or other acute respiratory viral infections"?

People were apparently attacking health care workers and generally causing trouble when queuing for the vaccine in a town in Finland yesterday and they had to call security guards to oversee the situation. I guess they were worried they wouldn't get the vaccine because of the long (hundreds of metres) queues.

Seriously, the media hysteria surrounding this thing causes more potential trouble than the flu itself.

I've probably had the flu by the time it's my turn for the vaccine (I'm at the very last group to get it, being a healthy adult). I can't be bothered to worry about it at the moment.

Because, for the umpteenth time, Swine flu is the only circulating flu in Europe and Viral Pnuemonia (ARIs) based infections are a result of being infected by Swine Flu, plus the WHO figures were collated after analysis of the Ukrainian Swine Flu figures. It really is that simple.

i think my dad may have come in contact with someone with swine flu... so now we're just hoping he didnt catch it. I definetely don't want it in my house, I have a production next week as well as the following! said he's having trouble breathing.. is that one of the warning signs?

I think I better up my vitamin intake just to be safe...

It's a warning sign if it's accompanied by fever higher than 38 degrees celcius, or if he's in a risk group. But to be on the safe side, maybe you should contact a doctor, if for nothing else, then at least to get peace of mind

When my dad got ill and I had an important gig coming up, I just killed him and burned the corpse. Because I have my priorities right.

Adivce is 'if he gets so breathless he has to pause mid sentence when speaking' go directly to hospital, because something's up. There are a lot of people who don't have any form of fever with this one for some unknown reason and it could be something other than flu causing the woe.

UK is also being hit by a more serious cases now it's cold, overall cases aren't that high but far more people are in intensive care than before. Across Europe a lot more perfectly healthy people are having serious cases of the illness:

Quote:
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said there are now 848 patients in hospital with swine flu, of whom 172 are receiving critical care. In September, the number of swine flu patients in hospital was below 300.
http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKTR...091105?rpc=401

One death was a healthy kid who died less than 24 hours after first signs of symptoms.

Quote:
Maisie's parents were too upset to talk to the Evening News but previously in a statement said they were “devastated that in less than 24 hours their beautiful and energetic daughter was taken from them”.

NHS Norfolk said it was believed the Notre Dame Preparatory School pupil had suffered an “extremely unusual” reaction to the virus which may have been a “major factor”.
http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/conte...A17%3A58%3A817

India has had a large number of deaths this week from an illness that has all the symptoms of Swine Flu but swabs have tested negative for all forms of flu:

Quote:
Doctors at Sassoon Hospital, who are in the thick of the swine flu battle, are a worried lot. Thirty-five patients with swine flu-like symptoms died in the last 45 days at the hospital, and not one of them tested positive for swine flu. The doctors still don't know what caused the death of these patients.

"We requested the National Institute of Virology (NIV) to check tissue samples from these patients for eight to 10combinations of the HN virus subtype like H1N2 or H2N2. It is extremely important that the virus is identified so we can decide on the course of treatment," said Dr Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon Hospital, which has been dubbed as the epicentre of the swine flu activity in the state.
http://www.mid-day.com/news/2009/nov...ities-Pune.htm

Though it emerged none of the Ukrainian rapid-test kits work, hence the delay in announcing A/H1N1 so could just be that rather than a new virus.

A number of reports of deaths occuring shortly after recieving Swine Flu vaccine comming in, paticularly in Finland though it's yet unclear what the cause of death was. There's an epidemic of Swine Flu cases and numerous deaths in the region so could just be that.

I'm among the first wave offered the vaccine here, which was a bit of a surprise.

Pretty sure it's Pandemrix rather than Celvapan, so I dunno like.
