"Uprising" download sales in the USA now total approx 1.8 million. The single may be certified double platinum in early 2012 if it continues to sell around 5-10k copies each week.

The Resistance has now sold just over 700,000 copies in the USA two years after its release. Black Holes and Revelations remains the band's top selling album in this country with an estimated 750k sold to date while Absolution is also very close to the 700k sales threshold. Origin of Symmetry and Showbiz have each sold approx 100k here.

OoS charted for only two weeks in February 2010 on the Billboard Pop Catalog Album Chart peaking at #19. It sold about 5,000 copies in the USA during those two weeks. On the Billboard 200 album chart it only got to #161 while in the UK it debuted at #3 on its official release 10 years ago and has been certified Platinum (300k plus copies sold).

wow, those numbers for Uprising are amazing... any idea how it compares to their other big singles (Like SMBH or Starlight) - do any of the other songs even approach it?

Starlight has sold well over a half million downloads followed by SMBH, UD and Resistance. SMBH also appeared on the Twilight soundtrack which has sold around 2.8 million copies in the USA.

Hit singles by pop acts such as Adele, LMFAO, Black Eyes Peas, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Lady Antebellum and Train have sold 5-8 million downloads each. By way of comparison, Foster the People's first single has sold over 4 million copies to date but it has received Top 40 pop radio airplay unlike Uprising which was played mostly by rock stations.

Chart news for "Survival" in the USA:

#39 Rock Songs - Debut & Greatest Gainer Alternative Songs with 165 spins up from 0 a week ago (Billboard)

#44 Alternative Songs - Debut with 136 spins at 34 radio stations (Mediabase)

#47 iTunes - Peak Position

Please note this song is apparently not the official first single from The 2nd Law which will be promoted to radio in early August. Also, the chart positions above reflect only about 3-4 days of radio airplay and download sales in the USA after BBC Radio 1 premiered it mid-week.

In the first four days of release and with minuscule airplay, Survival sold approx 16,000 digital downloads in the USA mostly on iTunes placing it it the Top 20 on both the Billboard Rock and Alternative Digital Songs charts. It sold a few thousand less than Burn It Down and about the same number as Viva la Vida and Pumped Up Kicks.

IMHO the best covers of Survival on YouTube:

Who could have imagined...

1962-2012

Communications satellite Telstar was launched into orbit 50 years ago yesterday, an event which inspired a British rock band to compose a song "Telstar" which topped the charts in both the UK and the USA. A guitarist in that band Tornados had a son who composed another song "Survival" with his band Muse. It has been chosen as the main official song of the 2012 Olympic Games which soon will be broadcast around the globe via satellite to an audience of 3-4 billion. It has also charted in both the UK and the USA. Remarkable.

Click on the link below and the embedded videos contained therein to relive the event as it happened a half century ago.

Survival facing resistance while Uprising proving its sustainability...

The Olympics single moved up slowly to #41 on the latest weekly Alternative chart compiled by Mediabase with 150 spins. On the similar Billboard chart compiled by Nielsen BDS it added a few more spins to 166 but the number of stations playing it actually went down. Several stations in California, notably world famous KROQ, one station in Tulsa, OK and satellite SiriusXM Alt Nation are apparently giving it significant radio foreplay. The climax for the first radio single will presumably take place sometime in August shortly after the impact/going for adds date set by the record label. Meanwhile, Uprising was given around 400 plays last week which would have ranked it as one of the forty most played songs at alternative radio. It is now classified as a recurrent however which means it can no longer appear on any chart. Survival download sales are increasing somewhat this week after a drop last week.

The competition will be fierce...

Not just for the athletes at the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games but for some high profile rock bands at radio and retail in the coming weeks as well. The Killers, Green Day, No Doubt and Mumford & Sons will be looking for adds at radio along with Muse. It appears Runaways by the Killers will already debut in the Top 20 next week. The Lumineers and Alex Clare will also be looking to get their first hit to the top of the airplay chart.

The album release schedule in September/October will be extremely competitive too:

Sept 11 Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan, The xx
Sept 18 Carly Rae Jepsen, The Killers, Pink, Ne-Yo, Nelly Furtado, Michael Jackson
Sept 25 Green Day, No Doubt, Mumford & Sons
Oct 2 Muse, Blake Shelton, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace

Please note singles and albums released in September will be eligible to receive nominations for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards happening at the Los Angeles Staples Center in February 2013.
