Tearing down the shop and rebuilding.

Before it had this center bench for fretting equipment, and then a long bench on the right. It is already a bit tore down in this photo, but it stretched until 6 feet before the back door. We wanted to get into a more employee friendly shop, once we hire some people, there will be designated work areas as opposed to just a long bench. The back left corner will be where the amp tech can work, and the space behind the bench to the back will be the woodworking/building area, with a space sanctioned off at the bay door for finish work. The big rack of guitars to the left is the monolith. Finished/work waiting.

15 hours of work later

4 L benchs that measure 7' by 5'. 2.5' of depth on the long side, 1' of depth on the shorter side. The shallow side will be used to hold tools, boxes for parts, etc.

Terribly excited for the new shop, even though it is way more work than I thought, things will be fully organized, space will be properly utilized, and we can streamline work a bit more.

Looking like a bit of work. Thought they hired you for the luthiery rather than the handy man stuff

Anyway, looks good. Now, churn out some guitars

Dude is living the dream as far as I'm concerned.

Are you installing any extraction? I would absolutely insist on it if you're doing any sort of scratchbuilding and refinishing. Personally, i'd want extraction at every work station.

Derp. Right, forgot you own the shop. How silly.

What's your turn around on an instrument normally? I might be in the US next year so I might have to make an order soon and then pop in and visit when I'm around to collect it.

Turn around time as of right now is 4-6 months. Later this year, it will be down to 3-4 months depending on finishing options. We have a shopwide air filtration/light dust collection system, but we only have heavy dust extraction on things like the table router and belt sander for now.

You can't go wrong visiting southern california, it really is like it's own country here.

Amazing beaches to the west, snow and mountain resorts to the east, Los Angeles/Hollywood to the north, mexico to the south. There are a wide variety of cultures all incredibly close to one another. Looking at a map, the concentration of highways and cities here is insanity. The only other area that compares is the New York area. Except we get all the Californian women and warm weather the beach boys were talking about.

Alex, if I sent you some specs could you get me a quote? Not looking to buy anything besides a vintage Martin right now, but a little down the line...

I thought an extractor would be mandatory anyway. The turn around dates sound good so if I want something, probably should order it around September/October to give heaps of time to save and for you to build.

I'll be in NY in April 2014 for a wedding I've been invited to. Was only going to stay a week but I might take the semester off Uni and travel around the US for a bit if I can save the dough. As long as it isn't 118 degrees there like it was last week here, I'll be content in California, even though I hate beaches despite living next to one.

Very tidy workshop. Think a few places could learn from that.

The less time you spend looking for tools, the more work you can actually get done. I've learned that the hard way. Take the struggle out.

That looks a lot like my local bass tech's setup; your surface looks better. He has a rubbery mat which is not well suited for nitro finishes.
