Hey guys!
I'm guessing that this is asked quite often on here, so apologies in advance...
Anyway, I'm hoping to have around 500-600 to upgrade my guitar amp and I need some suggestions. I'm pretty much trying to get a Muse sound (or as close as I can to it) and have absolutely no clue what amp I should be looking at. I'll also be playing some Foo Fighters/Editors, stuff like that too. I've been looking at the Marshall DSL40C and kind of like the tone of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Also, because it will help, my current guitar I'll be using is a PRS SE Custom 22 with a MBK2 Humbucker in the bridge.

Yeah the DSL would probably be best, especially for the OOS type sound, as Matt used the head version of that amp

Cheers! Would it be good enough for getting similar heavy distortion sounds on the later albums? (With pedals)

Depends what you're referring to exactly. For the album sounds, a DSL would be a good choice for most of them. I wouldn't say it's a particularly good amp to get some of the tones on absolution though, but as far as some of the more recent tones go (especially the last two albums) a Marshall would do just fine.

As far as pedals go, do you mean boosting the OD channel for more distortion, or running a distortion pedal into the clean channel for a completely different sound?

In my experience, boosting the OD channel with a tube screamer or SD-1 like a lot of people do just adds more saturation/distortion. It doesn't make it heavier at all, and I've never really seen the point of that.

The OD channel on the DSL should do just fine for most of those tones to be honest, but if you want heavier, I'd get a distortion pedal (maybe a diefet, which is based on the VH4's tone) and run it into the clean channel of the DSL.

Ahh right, cheers again!
If I'm being completely honest, I don't think I've ever ran my DS-1 or FF into a clean channel (I've currently got a Vox AD30VT, so it's all presets with added gain/volume and some effects)
Where do I get the Diefet pedal? Or will I have to build it myself?

no problem

I think you'd have to build it yourself, but there are alternatives from what I remember.

To be honest, if the amp doesn't have the right voicing on the OD channel (which I'd say it does for most of those tones) I wouldn't try changing it with additional OD pedals. It'll make far less of a difference compared to running a pedal with a different voicing into the clean channel

BUT... that's just going into the front end of the amp. You could get an EQ pedal and put it in the effects loop. If you were to do that, you could basically cut some of the midrange and boost some other frequencies if necessary.

Right, back again for amp advice
The Marshall amp seems a bit too far out of my budget now so I'm looking at alternatives.
Anyone had any previous experience with the Orange CR60C? And also the Blackstar HT-5R?
If not, could anyone suggest an amp for around the 250-400 price range?

Edit: And now I'm considering a Vox AC30VR

Anyone with experience on the TC electronics G major 2? How is it? Is it too "old" to purchase?

I just got a DSL15C, which absolutely nails the Hullabaloo tone, you can pick them up for less than 300.

Never knew that existed... looks like it might be a bit difficult though.

Since I've had no luck finding a separate orange crunch 4x12 for the DSL 100, I'm considering a standard 1960A with orange tolex and a metal grille for more hullabaloo tone. the spec would be the same anyway, even if it's not from the same edition

also, was just trying to find a picture of that setup when Matt used it, and I found one of him playing through a tweed fender (blues deluxe?) in 2001... guess it's rented as the Marshalls aren't the usual orange ones either

The tweed was used for his vocal distortion. If you look up the 2001 Jools Holland vids I think he had them then?
