Anyone want to recommend some decent but cheap IEM's? I really have no idea what I'm looking at.

Phasers, DIY or Pre-made?

Hi, i want a decent phaser, as it's about time i moved from the crappy one i have, and I've seen reviews for things like MXR (which i think Matt Bellamy uses) and Electro-Harmonix etc, but i came across these:

http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/a...HIFTER2007.php

http://www.buildyourownclone.com/phaseroyal.html

and they both seem really good, but I'm just not too sure, anyone have any help?

Well I'll answer it.

If you were doing total DIY, I'd say that Phasers are one of the harder effects to build because you need to adjust a few things on it to set it up. I've made a Phase 90 and it is a pretty difficult circuit for a beginner to make. Not too sure about that kit, but it'll probably do you well

The first kit you have there seems like it'll be a pretty difficult build for a beginner, even with a kit. The second one seems a bit simpler but in the end, hear some sound clips if you can because it is up to you.

would there be any decent ones that I don't have to build though?

slightly pricey eh? i found loads of others, but i thought with the DIY ones, you could design etc etc, and mod your own knobs, and I thought that'd be pretty cool

yeah, see it's not just a case of swapping around pots or anything like that. There's no simple mods for phasers. It takes decent knowledge of the circuit itself. I've been making pedals for a few years now, and i'd still never go near a phaser. They're notoriously difficult to build, and even trickier to mod.

Trust me kiddo, get some money together and buy a pedal that'll do everything you need so you dont have to destroy it by trying to mod it.

With the Phaser anyway, by the time you have paid for everything to DIY it, you'd be close to finding one that works second hand for the same price, or even finding one cheaper. They are rather complex circuits to understand. They usually involve matching transistors, involving a separate circuit and tweaking of trim pots to find the bias points. It involves a lot of troubleshooting if one part goes tits up and it can happen.

If you do want to do something DIY, start with a fuzz/distortion or booster pedal if you want something to look nice and be your own. It'll also introduce you to a fun and slightly viable hobby.

In terms of phasers it'll be hard to get what you want. If you want a very overt sounding phaser which is in your face, the EHX would be there. The MXR phasers are generally a little more subtle and not as harsh. The beauty about phasers though is changing their order on a pedal board changes their sound a bit. Might be worth thinking about downscaling what you want from a phaser. In the end, the major phasers are generally set well and the biggest thing you'll probably want in the end is a speed control.
