Let's hope the promo people at WMG do for Muse in August what it just accomplished for two of its other rock bands in the USA this past week:
"Burn It Down" ascends to No. 1 in its fourteenth week of release according to Mediabase while "Oh Love" leapfrogs "Runaways" and debuts in the top 10 on Alternative Songs in its debut week with about 1,200 spins. "Settle Down" also debuted in the top 40. Expect similar chart positions for these songs at Billboard later this week. Highest chart positions for "Survival" in the USA and elsewhere: #6 Daily Worldwide iTunes Chart dated June 29 #17 Alternative Digital Songs (USA-Billboard) - Over 30,000 download sales to date #18 France - Weekly sales chart #22 The Official UK Top 40 Singles Chart #31 Netherlands - Weekly sales chart #39 Rock Songs (USA-Billboard) - 1.6 million audience impressions first few days of airplay #39 Alternative Songs (USA-Mediabase) - 204 spins for first six days of airplay It will be hard for the first promoted single from The 2nd Law to surpass the success of "Uprising" however. The first single from The Resistance was released on August 4, 2009 in the USA and debuted at #16 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart compiled by Billboard. The following week (mid-August) it entered the top ten at #9. In mid-September it rose to the top of the chart in only its sixth week of release and spent a total of 17 weeks at the summit. On the Mediabase Alternative Songs chart it reigned at no. 1 for an unbelievable 19 weeks, a chart record which will likely never be broken. Extraordinary. Notable quotes about fat cats: "These capitalists have what the organisation needs - money to finance the campaign. These men are needed in political circles as 'Fat Cats'." - F.R. Kent, 1928 "Rise up and take the power back It's time the fat cats had a heart attack..." - Matt Bellamy, August 2009 "I did not run for office to be helping out a bunch of fat cat bankers on Wall Street...” - President Barack Obama, December 2009 On a related note, below is an article which makes reference to a "huge black hole in the world economy." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...6pLid%3D182553 Last edited by muse s'amuse; 19-08-2012 at 07:51 PM. |

What role will television play in the promotional campaign for T2L in the USA in the next couple of months? Muse has only performed live three times in the USA: MTV VMAs and SNL in 2009 and at the Grammy Awards in 2011.
MTV has reportedly scheduled its Video Music Awards for Thursday September 6, 2012 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Which bands/artists will be performing on the show that night to promote their new albums? Green Day, No Doubt, The Killers, and Muse are all possibilities along with Pink. Coincidentally, on the same night of the VMAs, President Obama is scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech at the Democratic Party National Convention in Charlotte, NC. The 2009 VMAs held on Sunday September 13 in NYC featured Muse performing "Uprising" in their American television debut. TR was released two days later and debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart with sales of 128k while the first single more than quadrupled in sales to 53k and reached #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #19 on the Digital Songs sales chart. Read the post-VMAs press release below to see the impact on record sales for the artists who performed on the show three years ago: http://mtvpress.com/2009VMA/ Last edited by muse s'amuse; 24-07-2012 at 07:23 PM. |

"Uprising" has re-entered the iTunes download single sales charts as a result of the song being on the playlist for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. In the USA it ranked in the Top 100 last night and most of today and in the UK it made it back into the Top 50.
It was the most watched opening ceremony on American television in the history of the Olympic Summer Games with an average of just under 41 million viewers. In the UK at its peak it attracted just under 27 million viewers. The worldwide audience who watched was estimated to be one billion. At its peak, 45 million Americans heard "Uprising" during the Olympics opening ceremony which beat the 28 million who watched Muse perform the song at the Grammy Awards in February 2011 and win the Grammy for TR. Also, almost 42 million Americans heard an excerpt of the Muse track "Map of the Problematique" from BHaR played at the beginning of the ceremony shortly before 2012 Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins rang the bell. I found that Uprising also re-entered Amazon Top 10 paid mp3 chart (probably because of discount).

Muse's 2009 hit "Uprising" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week according to Soundscan and industry sources. The snippet of the song played at the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games and discounting at Amazon as mentioned by the previous poster resulted in approx 15k paid downloads.
"Uprising" also re-entered the Billboard Rock Digital Songs chart at #24. "Survival" peaked at #20 on this same chart a month ago. Muse now join the elite club of British rock bands who have reached this 2x Multi Platinum single sales threshold in the USA during the digital era: The Beatles, Queen, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, and Florence +The Machine. Below is the updated album release schedule for some high profile artists in September and early October:
Sept 11 Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan, The xx Sept 18 Carly Rae Jepsen, The Killers, Pink, Wiz Khalifa, Ne-Yo, Nelly Furtado, Michael Jackson Sept 25 Green Day, No Doubt, Mumford & Sons, Deadmau5 Oct 2 Muse, Blake Shelton, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace, The Vaccines "Survival" has re-entered the iTunes UK Top 40 chart and is currently at #12 the day after Muse performed the single at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics Games. Despite being edited out of the NBC broadcast in the USA the official Olympic song has moved up the iTunes digital sales chart in the USA and is now selling about as many units as "Uprising." Headliners who performed at the opening and closing ceremonies received £1 in compensation. First, Romney insulted the UK when he visited London before the Games and then NBC Universal/Comcast disrespected Muse, The Who, Ray Davies of The Kinks, and Kate Bush at the closing ceremony and the Emeli Sande 7/7 tribute at the opening ceremony. "Madness" will be competing for airplay with second singles from label mates Linkin Park and Green Day along with the first single from Mumford & Sons. Because WMG delayed the release of T2L until October 2 the album will not be eligible to receive Grammy nominations this year. Last edited by muse s'amuse; 22-08-2012 at 10:04 PM. |

Madness probably has a better chance of receiving a nomination in the Rock Song category than Survival. Uprising was likely on the ballot for the 52nd Grammy Awards but unfortunately did not receive a nomination. One year later Resistance was nominated in its place at the 53rd Grammy Awards. T2L will be eligible for the 56th Grammy Awards taking place in early 2014 but Recording Academy voters may forget the album next year unless it has legs and it receives critical praise in the media and sells well. The Resistance surprised some observers because it was released in 2009 but won the Rock Album Grammy in early 2011. Muse had never been nominated before in any category.

Recent debuts on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart this summer:
#6 "Burn It Down" Linkin Park - Hit #1 for one week and is currently moving down the chart #7 "Oh Love" Green Day - Currently at #3. "Too Close" by Alex Clare leapfrogged it to #1 last week. No surprise that Green Day will be performing at the MTV VMA's in LA on September 6. #12 "I Will Wait" Mumford & Sons - Will enter the Top 10 on the chart this week #17 "Runaways" The Killers - Peaked at #7 last week "Madness" will likely debut high on next week's chart if Warner Bros. Records does its job and modern rock radio programmers like the first official single. We will find out how high it debuted by Monday August 27. As usual, you will be the first to know the details. "Uprising" debuted at #16 three years ago on the chart, its highest opening week chart position in the band's history. "Survival" climbs to a new peak position of #22 on the Official UK Top 40 Singles chart released today after Muse performed the song at the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. |

"Madness" Alternative Songs chart positions the first six days of release in the USA:

The two hottest songs on the latest daily worldwide iTunes chart tracking digital download sales in 57 countries are: #6 "Madness" Muse (2nd day of release and matches peak position of "Survival") #7 "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" Taylor Swift (Peak #5) Carly Rae Jepsen, Flo Rida, Maroon 5, Gotye, and Fun. occupy the top five slots on this chart. "Madness" will likely debut on at least seven different Billboard charts next week based on sales and airplay figures for the first week of release. It has reached the Top 50 on iTunes and has received super massive airplay at modern rock radio. It is already at #12 on the Alternative Songs chart and ascending rapidly into the Top 10.
Updated Album Release Schedule (USA only): 2 October 2012 Muse, Diana Krall, Blake Shelton (Christmas album), Three Days Grace, Papa Roach, Cher Lloyd, Wallflowers Industry predictions for first week sales of new albums to be released in September: Mumford & Sons 400k G.O.O.D. Music Compilation (Kanye West) 200k Pink 200k No Doubt 175k Michael Jackson 150k Green Day 150k The Killers 125k Carly Rae Jepsen 75k Last edited by muse s'amuse; 13-09-2012 at 02:30 PM. |

Now Madness is "first" official single from T2L (according to band), so hopefully they will promote this single more than Survival and eventually get higher position on charts !!
