No when Matt plays it live he's playing it over two strings (E tuned to D and A). In the studio it was the high d string. Watch the live videos and you'll spot it for yourself.

Well you're right about the recording; it's not a low D. But watch the performance at Big Day Out (Sydney) in 2004 and he clearly plays the low D in the solo.

Look at the fretboard in the video and look at his picking hand. It doesn't correspond with an open d because he's picking two separate strings.

Which is how that one's played just with more distortion and a much better sound than mine. Plus the solo is fucked up in that one.
first, there isn't anything played on the 11th fret in that riff.

and it looks like you were playing

12 13 13 12 12 10 12 0 13 13 12 12 10 12

or something like that.

And as for the solo, matt plays it on the open D string (meaning the 4th string) in the studio recording. live he plays it on the 6th string (which is tuned down from E to D). there are open notes there, only difference is live it's an octave lower because he plays on the 6th string.

if that makes sense.

This.

You can't make out any of the notes he's really playing because of the technique or lack there of it.

I meant the 10th fret not 11th, my bad.

And I see what you mean about it sounding like 12 12 13 13 with no open notes in the middle. I'll work on that.

Slow the riff down...a lot.
Learn to play it flawlessly at 50% otherwise you'll create bad habits for yourself by playing beyond your comfort level, that will never be able to get rid of, and trust me on that.
You should think about that before you learn any riff especially the fast ones, and after a a few months your articulation on the guitar will improve substantially, and learning quicker stuff like SS will become much easier.
You'll notice its not easy to make a fast riff like SS sound anything but annoying when played slow, which is why you'll be a pro at it once grasped and sped up

dude he plays it right tho he tabbed it wrong. i learnt to play this on piano from the tab books. d= low D=high
its D d D# d D d C D d d D# d D d C D d d D# d D d C D d d D# d F# G F# D#

the low d's correspond to the open d string.
and there was nothing wrong with the way he played it, i thought it was pretty clear. some people need to clear the wax out of their ears. even if it was a bit muddy. he was playing it right
