View Full Version : The Flaming Lips

Okay I searched the board and couldn't find a thread already so here:

Who on here is a big Flaming Lips fan? So far the only people I've encountered that are fans (throughout my brief lifetime as a Lips fan) have been people I know that like Muse. Was wondering if this was a common thing at all? And if either Muse or the Lips liked each others stuff?

I'm terribly gutted actually as I missed their set at BDO this year (a friend got to be part of the menagerie on stage - lucky bugger!) but I'm living in hope they'll come back to NZ. I mean we got Muse finally!

Other questions: what's everyone's favourite album/song? I only actually own Yoshimi so far (through lack of $$) but my favourite songs would be Fight Test, Yoshimi Pt.1 and Waitin' For a Superman. And maybe Bad Days and Chewin' the Apple of Your Eye... okay that'll do!!

So yeah: rant and rave about the Lips :D

favourite song: Do you realize. Not really a muse fan much anymore so i don't know if it's a common thing.

I heard a rumour that they might come back to Big Day Out next year but sadly I think it's just a rumour. They'll probably still be working on their new album then and the film.

But The Chemical Brothers are playing BDO and if they play The Golden Path won't they need Wayne? *looks hopeful*

i saw flaming lips in plymouth it was bloody brilliant, confetti flying everywhere, loads of balloons & also wayne blew up this giant ballon on satge so that it burst & loads more bits of confetti & balloons came out of it, also the animal costumes, i want to try & be a tiger next time i see them, i think i would look ok in stripes lol :)

nastley

Are they playing quite big venues in England? I guess if they go out and play places like Plymouth and Brighton still (no offence meant!) they can't be that big in the UK.

My friend (probably pissed as and stoned out of his head after a whole day at BDO) said he was talking to this American guy for a while and the guy asked him if he wanted to don an animal costume and dance onstage and he was like "yep, sure, cool" he didn't have a clue he was talking to Corey or anything. Didn't know anything about how fans would kill (in a figurative sense) to do this. He told me he was a lion but I wasn't sure if there was a lion and maybe he got confused with a tiger if he was so out of it. How unfair! This same guy also spent the night drinking with Muse! (don't feel so bad about that though as I was there too)

I mean he's a fan of the music but isn't aware of much else and still he gets to hang out with all these bands almost unwittingly. Wish I had that luck!

The live shows sound amazing but I'm still not completely hooked on the idea of fully grown men in animal suits (though I think they normally pick petite females - said friend is 6'3) they freak me out! I hated Disneyland...

New album out soon I hope, woo!

Next time Flaming Lips are in the UK I'm going! Who's coming with?

Wayne Coyne seems like the nicest man ever and they just make the most beautifully uplifting and hopeful music. And if you've seen their DVD ("Fearless Freaks") you'll know they're proper rock'n'roll and not just a bunch of hippies!

On Friday their MySpace bulletin featured Wayne Coyne trying to find homes for puppies of a stray in his neighbourhood. The photos were the sweetest thing you've ever seen.

I can see why Muse fans like the Flaming Lips stuff. They're like 2 sides of the same Coyne (sorry, that was so bad!). Muse are like the panic phase of the end of the world and Flaming Lips are like the joyful acceptance stage.

There are illegal copies floating around the net but I don't know the policy here on linking to one of the downloads so to be on the safe side I won't... E-mail me or just google it. It's worth whatever amount of time you spend searching it down. It's really, really, really amazing; like best of the new millennium kind of good, though it takes some getting used to.

BlackoutMatt

*has resisted leaks so far*

it's hard, but with bands like the Flips, you need to wait for the release. Then rush to the nearest record shop, gleefully pick up a copy, impatiently toying with the case and admiring the artwork as you wait to be served...tearing off the celophane wrapping...opening the case...taking the CD out...admiring the inlay...

etc, etc.

Yeah the covers are on something else. I'm sorry but when it comes to bands like the Lips I can't resist. I don't know I guess it's that though I really like them I've only been something resembling a "fan" until like the last month and even then I wasn't totally sure. The leaked version lacks two of the tracks and the mix probably isn't final as the vocals seems to get completely lost in the background from time to time. It's amazing stuff though, I was stunned at the quality of it to the point that I think they may be my all time favorite American band with either Radiohead or Pink Floyd being my favorite overall.

*sniff* I have still not seen them. Maybe this Big Day Out they and Muse will be in New Zealand again :)

It's been a long time since I've been around these parts but someone mentioned Zaireeka was their favourite album - is it really as amazing a concept as it sounds?

Oh and to whoever wanted to know where the Seven Nation Army cover was it was either on the Fight Test or Do You Realize?? EPs.

Ahh Wayne. I eternally hate my friend who was a tiger/lion/some form of large cat on stage last time they were here then went with them on a drive out to the beach to watch the sun rise the next day - how unfair that I wasn't there!

I have a rather conflicted relationship with this band.

I do like some of their songs, and "Do your realize??" is absolutely gorgeous, but oftentimes I find it hard to connect with their songs in a way that's meaningful. I mean, I've listened "Soft Bulletin" numerous times, trying to "get" it, but can't find the genious in it...pretty, nice songs but that's it for me.

Live they were great, they really do put on a great show!

The Flaming Lips have already recorded a follow-up to “Embryonic.” The band will release a track-by-track interpretation of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in the near future, which it recorded with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, a band that features Coyne’s nephew Dennis.
Looking forward to this. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and Dark Side of the Moon have always reminded me of each other.

And I've still yet to re-listen to Embryonic. I really should, because so far, I'm not sure how I feel about it other than that it scares me shitless.

Their former-drummer-now-multi-instrumentalist had a project with Steve Burns named Steve-n-steveN. I'm not sure whether they're still active, as they haven't come out with anything new since I last checked, but here's the MySpace page anyway: http://www.myspace.com/steveburnsstevendrozd. God I wish I lived in England.

Saw them at Free Press Summer Fest I mentioned a few posts down and they didn't play a SINGLE Soft Bulletin song. Had me a bit miffed. And apparently Waiting for Superman was on the setlist but they didn't play it.

Amazing show but some of the embryonic songs seemed boring live and no soft bulletin songs sucks (Only pre-yoshimi song at all was She Dont Use Jelly, which was awesome live but still). I didn't prepare well though and almost passed out a few times, which made me more impatient than I would have been so that may have been part of the reason with the embryonic songs.

I've not been so obsessed with a single bad since I was about 13. I cannot get enough of this band at the minute! Embryonic is a master piece. The best double album i've heard since The Wall. The entire second disc is simply brilliant through out. I will see this band live some day.

It's so good to hear a band who's previous 4 albums sound so different from each other, but so good at the same time. Can't say the same for another band, except Pink Floyd, again.

Pompeii am Götterdämmerung is one of the most beautiful songs of all time.

By the way, how many people have heard their first four albums? And what do you think of them? Personally, I'd say In a Priest-Driven Ambulance is their first good album, though Hear It Is and Oh My Gawd...!!! are decent too, with some damn good songs. Telepathic Surgery is meh though.

Honestly I still don't love Embryonic that much. Seeing them live made me like it even less, some songs work but a lot don't. Maybe its just me though.

I'm still in love with Yoshimi and the Soft Bulletin, two of my favorite albums ever. Transmissions from a Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic are both really good too, but I haven't listened to anything older than that.

I'm sure. They aren't doing many of those shows and when they played it on NYE they played like an 12 song set of normal songs (Worm Mountain and Yoshimi Pt 1 included) before playing the Soft Bulletin.

I really hope they do more Soft Bulletin dates though. I really wanted to go to NYE but I couldn't. And now the only other US date is in Chicago and thats too far :( Its one of my favorite albums ever and I can't even imagine the pure joy of hearing Race for the Prize and the Gash live

Wayne is such a sweet guy. He drove a couple of hours to a Dallas record store with a box of Flaming Lips/Neon Indian vinyls, and then signed autographs for more than 4 hours. Not only that, but he talked to each fan. I don't know if he was actually kidding. :chuckle:
