Just looked at the unofficial (we hate) iamxforum to see their predictable angry dramatic teenager reaction to the "horrors" of a remix album. I was not disappointed:
Dear IAMX management,
You guys are stupid! No, Seriously! You are all doing really stupid things that doesn't do any good to either you chris or the fans! Stop doing so fucking stupid all the time!
Chris Corner's penis is officially smaller than Janine's nose. I guarantee that.
I'm tired of his selfish drama-queen attitude, by the way. Get out of the fucking closet, finally, unless you're travelling Narnia from your berlin studio, shortie. And probably get some high heels and Lady Gaga wig, to deal both balding and height complexes.

If you are merely a follower of the music, aggression is pointless as in most cases. KOWA has been out a year and there is nothing wrong with having a remix album, perhaps if fans waited longer than that it would make most sense and I am sure Chris is/will be recording some more. Fans are silly

It's just the one website, and even then only about half of them! They were apparently kicked out of the other fan-forum (iamxinternational) for being so aggressive, so formed their own anti-fan forum to be as obnoxious as they liked. They love the first album and Sneaker Pimps, and hate everything else, including Chris. They pretty much just blanketly hate the last two albums and live band, and claim anyone who doesn't agree with them is an arse-licker. Look a couple of pages back on this thread and you can see their founder (Optimax tm) responding to me! I know though, they're utterly ridiculous, but seem to get some kind of kick out of it. And from things like mysapce/facebook/twitter and the other fan-forum you can tell the majority fan opinion is generally against them too!

Certainly vocally they can both be piercing and harsh enough to strip paint from walls! I think there's more similarity between Matt and Chris than there is in the old comparison of Matt and Thom Yorke. But i'd never be able to confuse any of them. ...come to think of it those are probably my 3 favourite vocalists of all time though so there must be some vague similarity!
Chris > Matt > Thom :yesey:
I suppose musically they both mix rock and synths (with the occasional piano), but they do it in such a different way that it almost never sounds similar to me.

Maybe falsetto vocals are another similarity? Chris is WAY better than Matt in that aspect, though. Chris has a really resonant, clean falsetto. Matt's can be too delicate when soft, and too screechy when loud.

Hmm well, I've seen IAMX and Muse live and I can say without any doubt that Matt was better singing live than Chris was. Chris was out of tune a lot when I saw them. Both good singers though.

From the multiple times i've seen them both live, Chris has a far better low and middle register, while Matt's tends to get very nasally and whiney, but Matt has a stronger higher register/falsetto (or at least one which is more likely to be pitch perfect) while Chris very occasionally doesn't hit it quite right so it strays or sounds weak. On albums though i'd say Chris has a better voice all round. Especially as Matt's voice is getting fuller and less cutting these days.
But as i've said, they're my probably my two favourite vocalists so this is really splitting hairs.

EDIT: And there's a bit more about the new album on the remix album press release http://www.reybee.com/iamx/210/
IAMX are currently planning the next chapter of their very storied history which includes touring throughout Europe and the follow-up, which is planned for release in Fall 2010. "After a long hard northern European winter, I have fallen into an impatient and aggressive state of mind," he says. "I have the feeling everything I am writing at the moment is more biting than Kingdom of Welcome Addiction. But then again I am known to have intense mood swings. We will spend a month touring Europe in March and then I will lock myself in my East Berlin playhouse and continue work on the next IAMX album. I plan to release this in the autumn. After the festival season, around the release we will tour extensively in the US and in Europe. In the in-between I will be developing material for online activity, making videos and talking to the wild boars in my garden."

Here's another interesting recent interview, albeit one written by a slightly over-enthusiastic fan:
http://www.mudkiss.com/iamx.htm
In the Western world we follow all sorts of icons: they are not just political and religious but also cultural, and that’s on all levels, from our most basic popular culture to academic level. It is important that we smash through those icons as they are used and put the world into a false context.
How very post-structural of him. True too! In high-brow academia, the post-structuralists are now the new idols, but who in turn can twist the world into a false, or at least meaningless, context. Derrida is now no less of an idol than any idol in trashy popular culture who pompous academics may sneer at. Deconstruction is by it's definition therefore an endless process as even once you've deconstructed the world, you must then deconstruct your own new construction. Which interestingly sounds like something else Chris says in that interview: "I think people mix dressing up with acting. With me it’s not about the acting, it’s more about putting myself in a position where I can deconstruct myself, and it’s easier for me to do that by dressing up than just going on stage in a t-shirt."
That may be me putting my own thoughts into his mouth though.

I love his entries and can't wait for the new album. I am actually wary of him collaborating - I think that (although I love all the IAMX albums) that his stuff has gotten progressively more interesting and textural and am worried that others will have TOO much influence and take away the essence of IAMX... he made so many wonderful choices in his compositions on his own... I hope this will be successful.

The dreaded double posting bump. I just looked up that Russian soundtrack version of S.H.E. on Youtube so I could show it to someone, and saw in a comment what the title means. When I saw it, I shat bricks.
Yes. It's been one of my favorite IAMX songs for three years, and I've listened to it far too many times to have an excuse, but I seriously never made that connection.:facepalm:
Don't worry, it took me waaaay too long to get it too

+1 I was listening to KOWA for the first time in ages last week. I liked it before, but it's actually managed to grow on me after a break! Especially the second half of it.
Btw, has anyone seen the news that they're now going for drum machine all the way again for both live and new album: http://www.iamx.eu

I think he may have finally snapped!
Looks like it was just Optimax delving into his Sneaker Pimps/early IAMX demo collection, with a couple of old Chris remixes. He's probably only doing it because Chris has promised to do the same thing on his website, and as usual Optimax wants to try and disrupt things! Well... maybe i'm just being cynical, but it is how he seems to think. Anyway, I think i've already got pretty much all of them except the SP5 demos (supposedly recorded by Chris and Liam Howe with an unknown female vocalist). None of them are new tracks though! Just old unreleased ones.

Whey! That chorus is awesomely epic! And I can see what Chris meant in his blog by it being "more electronic than I expected". I don't immediately love it though... it lacks raw edges and has too much electronic gloss for me. May grow more on me. But I do like it nonetheless, and think it should make more sense within the context of the album. I think my nagging problem with it is that it musically lacks that IAMX individuality of sound. If it weren't for the vocals i'd be unable to tell it was an IAMX song...
EDIT: Actually having now heard a bit of the uncompressed version, I already like it a lot more!

I'm finding that the more I listen to that song the more I hear, especially now we have a good quality version of it with that video. At first it felt to me like it lacked some kind of depth or a musical individuality which was recognisably IAMX, but now I keep noticing new little random things, whether strange screams of white noise, or odd little off-kilter electronic near counter-melodies, or how the guitar is used in the chorus/end (if it even is a guitar!), or even just how the vocals are layered. Really been growing on me a lot! Plus those vocals are very catchy! And the lyrics seem to fit very thought-provokingly oddly, yet fittingly against the backdrop of the Middle East revolutions, which is what i've been reading news reports/analysis on late into the night.
Anyway, can't wait for the album now! Just pre-ordered myself a copy. :awesome:

Well the lyrics appear to be about those people and countries who are exploited and oppressed by neo-colonial western capitalist interests. If those western powers present themselves outwardly as utopias then those exploited to feed their coffers are undoubtedly the unheard ghosts of those utopias! Well the lyrics appear to be about those people and countries who are exploited and oppressed by neo-colonial western capitalist interests. If those western powers present themselves outwardly as utopias then those exploited to feed their coffers are undoubtedly the unheard ghosts of those utopias! Hence the Arabic on the walls and, I imagine, why Chris is randomly dressed in the video in a South American poncho.
I see! I sort of got the song, I just felt that the video was, as you said it in your earlier post, that it lacked some depth. At first it struck me as sort of just "cool looking images put randomly together". But I just have to watch it more closely, the video will surely unveil it's secrets slowly.

If you click on the song links on http://itunes.apple.com/de/preorder/volatile-times-deluxe-edition/id422583307, or just change your iTunes store to the German one yourself (somehow!), then you can hear previews of all the tracks on Volatile Times (WARNING: Clicking on that link changed mine to the German store and i've currently no idea how to change it back!).
And i'm not sure what to make of it from those clips. Very weird, slightly chaotic sounding, and very atmospheric, near abstract. Might be closer to an updated Sneaker Pimps "Splinter" than it is to any other IAMX album. I've put my impressions of all the previews below:
I Salute You Christopher: Very atmospheric and slow sounding with no drums or bass but lots of squalling violin, slow synth chords, and awkward, synth touched vocals.
Music People: Slightly more atmospheric and chaotic than it sounded on those live youtube clips, but essentially the same!
Volatile Times: Odd mix of poppy vocal melodies, choatically happy drums, and blaring distorted horn/synths.
Fire And Whispers: Aggressive stop-start drums, cool bass and squalling guitar. Sounds like the live youtube clips but more interesting and slightly less ballad like!
Dance With Me: Very "Splinter", all acoustic plucking and shed loads of atmosphere. Unless it's only an intro on the preview you certainly won't be able to dance to it!
Bernadette: Aggressive east-European tilted waltz.
Ghosts of Utopia: You know! Sounds like it may actually be the most accessible track on here!
Commanded By Voices: An unhinged ballad with a waltzing bass, jazzy drums, and lots of vocal harmonies.
Into Asylum: Noisy distorted bass and shouting, breaking into an acoustic plucked chorus with loads of soft chanting vocals, and back! Think of a chaotic unhinged Attack 61... well it's not at all like that, but that's close enough!
Cold Red Light: Somewhere around Skin Vision/Fuel and Nature Of Inviting with some squalling guitar, looping synths, and very catchy vocals.
Oh Beautiful Town: Rolling military drums, tinkling piano and synths, lovely violin, and that absolutely beautiful vocal melody that can be heard in the live clips.
Avalanches [Vinyl Bonus track]: I'm already wishing it was also on the CD from the 30 second clip! Sounds like an achingly beautiful piano ballad. But it looks like it will be available digitally too!
I think this is one which will require repeated listens. Definitely don't expect immediacy!
Remember all those are 30 second clips though! The full length songs may vary!

Mark's notes are far more interesting than my random thoughts, but here:
Oooh I like Music People a lot.
Dance People sounds like it's on the verge of erupting into something epic. Maybe it won't but I have a feeling...
Bernadette is quirky!
THIS IS PSYCHOSIS, THIS IS PSYCHOSIS
Avalanches is so pretty!
I think this album sounds really promising! You can definitely expect some great tracks, in my opinion.

And I agree that it sounds promising. I just think it will need to be listened to fully and repeatedly, whilst I loved the last two albums from the first listen. But that can be a good thing! From the clips I genuinely think it could end up being anywhere between my favourite and my least favourite IAMX album!

"Fire and Whispers" is being given away for free on the IAMX Website, where there are also some different & better 30 second clips of each song: http://iamx.eu/index2.html?volatile-times.html*
That midi-esque bass on Fire and Whispers keeps making me think of old computer games. Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing! It sounds a bit demo-ish to me, but I do have a lot of fond memories of old computer games... And those clips make Commanded By Voices, Into Asylum, and Cold Red Light sound pretty deranged!
EDIT:* I see someone's put them all in a convenient video:

Album's leaked! Initial impressions drunk at 2am with only 3 hours sleep in the last 48 hours:
I Salute You Christopher: Speaking as a drunk, was Chris drinking? Lyrics seem awkward and melody is pretty much absent. Lots of atmosphere with synths and violin. HA! I like the bit about "the man in the sky is a tyrant and a lonely psychopath"! Good bye any religious IAMX fans! And in east Europe that's surely quite a few! Going into choral-ish music. I think he was going for an anti-Hymn. Pretty much just a long intro, but not amazing as an individual song. May grow on me, it has humour in it at least, the Chris choir at the end is pretty nice, and it sets up an odd unsettled mood...
Music People: Production seems a bit chaotic (too much reverb and vocals too low in the mix?). Only seems to work when listened to loud, like the original mix of the Alternative. Yes, that's a bit better. It is cool in an atmospheric-noisy-industrial way! And I love that chorus! AH WOO! End is amazing chaos. Weird start to an album between these two. Oddly headfuckish in my current state! Be interesting if it keeps this feeling up for the whole album...
Volatile Times: Bring in the industrial funk! With a brass filled chorus. Keeping the unhinged/slightly unreal feeling. Although no sleep and drunkenness may help this. Sounds zooming around my head. Not sure of the coca cola product placement! Wall of sound building up here. Getting wonderfully strange to lay on a person who's not quite with it anyway. DARTH VADER CONDUCTING DUMBO'S PINK ELEPHANT JAZZ BAND! That's what it is.
Fire and Whispers: Intro makes a lot of sense coming from that last track. Still think that bass sounds too midi-ish. "Even when the drugs have gone" seems apt for the album's feeling so far! Song has a good melody and really seems to work in context.
Dance With Me: Echoing footsteps give way to vaguely Chinese feeling plucking and unsettling atmosphere. Fragmented piano adds a really cool edge. Military drums and squalling swirling violin making this fairly neck hair raising. I do like this. Really like this. Thunder storm!
Bernadette: Beautiful violin intro, with added sci-fi Doctor Who thing. Then huge aggressive waltzing bass and East European lilt. Now this makes me want to dance! Who knows what the lyrics are about, and I don't really care at this point. Loving it! Doctor Who returns with a bit of added Gogol Bordello. There seems to be a street party going on at the end of this!
Ghosts of Utopia: Not sure how this is going to fit with the album's flow so far (pre-emptively!) With a bit of extra intro apparently! Feels very noticeably more electronic in context. But it does work! And it is a damn catchy song. Especially THAT chorus. Makes a nicely welcome catchy break actually! Shit, this is a much better album than I was expecting from those clips! Really works well together so far. Very happy right now.
Commanded By Voices: Electro blues? Works well. Very well. Atmosphere prevalent again, and that chorus with a choir of vocals is fantastic. Dissonant guitar worthy of Johnny Greenwood there! Genuinely love this again. A touch insane. Whoops, clattering, and creepy child. Percussion breakdown with a chorus of people twatting things and guitar squalling about.
Into Asylum: The way it abruptly cuts into this feels drug-trip unsettling (in my drunken state). Lots of shouting over distortion for verse followed by chanting chorus over plucked guitar. All slightly odd. Terrible lyrics: "flush the toilet on this God shit"(?)... :erm: Not sure it works as a song, but as a kind of part two to Commanded By Voices it kind of works.
Cold Red Light: They really have worked on album flow. Descending deeper into the chaos is I feel accurate. I can imagine people getting very excited or completely turned off by this point! Luckily for me i'm on the excited side - on first (slightly spaced out) listen at any rate. Slightly Skin Vision in feel as a track. But with added swirling dissonant synths, deranged guitar squalls, and random screams. And getting ever stranger. Curiouser and curiouser.
Oh Beautiful Town: Doctor Who synths return with thunderous drums. Beautiful piano and violin compliment and sooth over thunder, and the chorus melody and lyrics are just wonderful. Wall of lovely sound at the end, fading into distant drums...
Well that was odd. Started off unsure, but I loved it by the end. Just feels like a brilliant, flowing whole. I may really, really like this album after repeated listens! May be a big grower. Want to listen again, but need sleep. Very badly! x

Being now sober, less sleep deprived, and a few listens in, I can add to my drunken thoughts that "I Salute You Christopher" has remarkably (considering my initial opinion of it) really grown on me, but i'm not really feeling "Into Asylum." The album sounds to me like a collection of B-Side experiments which were deemed too odd, but the type of B-Sides that you listen to and wish were on the album instead of some of the safer songs! I like it. A lot. Probably my second favourite after The Alternative, and not to far behind it either! Slightly flawed, but glorious! And it really works well as a whole.

Volatile Times release
Hello my friends
Today we release Volatile Times.
I want you all to know that I am very excited and, as always, feeling somewhat sick in the knowledge that a piece of me is going out into the world to be analysed, criticised and loved. But overall I am proud of the record despite my previous psychotic blog.
And it is sad that music these days is instantly downloadable. This will make it very difficult for us to survive. We know that. You know that. Blah blah blah. There are always parasites that think they deserve art for free and live off other peoples energy. And I refer to the person that uploaded the album before the release. I am used to this. Ignorance does not surprise me anymore. But I trust YOU my friends. I consider you close to my heart. That you have supported this project so intensely gives me goose pimples every time I think about it and when we receive messages like this one below I remember that I do have faith in people.

Fantastic work, really fantastic.
Kindest regards Rowan
A small note to our fans in UK, US and Canada.
We are trying very hard to get a solid release in your territories and also to set up some shows. It seems harder than ever to make it happen on our indie budget. The only real way to secure this in the future is for you to buy the record. We just cannot afford it and nobody with big pockets seems to be interested in challenging music anymore. That is the reality of the situation.
We will update you as soon as there is news.
So, whiskey raised and downed, lets all do what we can to keep the spirit alive.
Much love and respect.

Sounds like times are really tough for them, despite the growing fan base. Hope they survive. :(
I've already pre-ordered the CD, but like the new album so much that I may get it on vinyl too in a couple of months time, when I can hopefully afford it! Mostly because I do love that rich depth of sound you get on vinyl.

Hello beautiful people,
with tremendous disappointment we regret to inform you that tonight and the next two Scandinavian shows have been cancelled.
On arriving in Malmö, Chris, the other band members and one crew member were taken to a hospital after violent outbursts of fever.
We now know that they have contracted an aggressive virus which prevents them from performing (see attachment).
The shows will be re-scheduled, we will let you know the new dates in the next days, as soon as they have been organised.

That's really unfortunate to know that the band is struggling financially. I thought they had done well with Metropolis Records in the US, but it looks like they are no longer associated with that label. My boyfriend was watching a blu-ray movie earlier today (I think Buried), and there was a promo for Fear.net that ran beforehand with the music for Nightlife. I was shocked... nowhere did the promo display the artist or song title, but they could probably benefit from more exposure like that.
I'm sad that the vinyl is no longer able to ordered from the IAMX boutique. I hope they get more in stock soon..

But bizarrely released as an electronic remix of the track. A remix which I personally don't think is as good as the original... :erm: Although, saying that, it works well when turned VERY LOUD (which makes the levels balance out) and the new OOS Muse-worthy bass riff on there is fucking awesome! :awesome:
If the original track (complete with distorted brass band and properly mixed vocals) was mixed with that bass in the verses, then I would be very, very happy.

Wish I could have seen them in London. :(
I wonder if Chris can walk again yet? I read on the Facebook news feed a week or two ago that he'd fucked his foot while destroying a drum kit, and would have to do the next few shows either hobbling about with crutches or sat on a stool in a protective boot. Bless.
 Damn it. I was hoping for some action during the show!

Wow, the gig was amazing. Wish I could relive that night again. Except the crowd was way too enthusiastic and my purse got hurt :(
Oh and Chris was able to move around just fine :chuckle:
