Sonic Youth are fuckin' great. Sonic Nurse is easily one of this years best albums, and their previous album Murray Street was top-notch, too. I saw them live a few months ago -- it was probably the best gig I've been to.
Sonic youth are the shizzle
so what is their best album? i just got into them and i really want to buy an album but dunno which one to start with

I personally think Dirty's their best album but I'd try downloading a few songs from Daydream Nation and see if you like them. If you do, go out and buy it

Evol was a good album from Sonic Youth in there early years. And open the doors for the other band like Nirvana The Pixies and Dinosaur Jr and even Idlewild.Even Placebo love's that album it's funny that there was so many people in too Sonic Youth but i think that album started it all before teenage riot.

I saw them last year and they completely blew me away despite me having really high expectations beforehand. They played most of Sonic Nurse and also classics like Teenage Riot and Expressway To Yr Skull which seemed to last about half an hour! What more could you want??

SONIC YOUTH RECORDING + MIXING NEW LP
The band has spent the first days of February mixing songs from the upcoming album with engineer John Agnello at Sear Sound and recording overdubs with engineer Aaron Mullan at the band's own studio on Murray st. Some of the first songs mixed include 'Incinerate', 'Pink Steam', 'Do You Believe in Rapture?' and 'What a Waste'.
Basic tracks were recorded with engineer TJ Doherty at legendary Sear Sound Studio. Sear Sound has been the site of recording previous SY albums 'Sister' and 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star', and Thurston's 'Psychic Hearts'. The new record is to be released late Spring/early Summer 2006.
Just ordered the Kim Gordon album with DJ Olive etc.

Sonic Youth are awesome. I saw them live this summer. I also saw Metric. Metric is better live than Sonic Youth but Sonic Youth is Sonic Youth! I remember the concert. A girl threw up next to me and during all the show, I was scared to have vomit on my pants. I was close to the slam so I was scared to be projected in the vomit. There was a disgusting smell of weed mixed with vomit all around me. Believe me it's worse than the smell of 1000 Rosie O'donnel farts. Behind me, there was an ugly slut screaming stupid stuff... But the guy with her was way more stupid. He had red hair and he was telling Thurston that he wanted his baby. I wanted to punch him, but I don't wanted to fall in the vomit.
P.S. The show was magical! Good musicians!

Can someone recommend me a sonic youth album?
I have Daydream Nation, but whilst it has good moments I found it largely fell short of my expectations and was disappointed.
MONTHS LATER EDIT: I take it back now! It's grown on me loads. Especially now i've got some of their rockier albums to counterbalance it! :D

Something I personally find with sonic youth is some of their tracks I love and some vary from indifference to dislike.
Dirty has some great tracks I think. Sugar kane and The strip or whatever it's called. I like that album a lot.

Sonic Youth seem to have taken me in a big way recently!
I've had Goo, Daydream Nation, and Dirty playing pretty much on repeat since the sun came out. They just seem to suit summer somehow. Beautifully raw psychedelic-tinged noise!
I love Sonic Youth, can't wait for the new album:)
I listened to the stream on Facebook for The Eternal. This band PHYSICALLY CAN DO NO WRONG!! :D
(except Experimental Jet Set :stunned: you heard!)
Still think Dirty is my fave album but more listens of The Eternal may change my mind for me :D

I almost lost faith after Experimental Jet Set. Bleh. It's really been years since I've kept up with them, but I really like Goo and Dirty a lot. I listened to part of the new album online and it sounds awesome! So I'll probably get it.

I love all of those though, especially Goo. :D

I'd say Goo > Daydream Nation >> Sister >>> EVOL myself.
And I definitely don't agree with Rather Ripped. I think that's one of their dullest albums. I'd actually put The Eternal as their best album of the decade.
One of my favourite bands ever though. :yesey:

Even as a big fan, the idea of an instrumental Sonic Youth film-soundtrack made me wary of their latest album...
BUT, i've been loving it! Especially "Les Anges Au Piano", with the beautiful Debussy-esque piano. It's a bit much to listen to all 13 tracks in one go, but i've really enjoyed chilling with it in the background. Although chilling may be the wrong word! It's a bit too unsettling for that!

Cool, need to hear it.
It's called "Simon Werner a Disparu". Weird album which I couldn't recommend to everyone, but I found that treating it in my mind as a really twisted post-rock album makes it quite an extraordinary listen. Would be a brilliant if terrifying album to get drunk or stoned to!
EDIT: Here's a good review and some samples: http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/6w5c

Sonic Youth co-founders Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon have separated after 27 years of marriage and the future of the noise-rock band is uncertain, its label's parent company said.
RIP Sonic Youth? :(

I'm just glad I got to see them live. It was in January 1993 (the Dirty Tour when their mainstream profile had really peaked yet they were still as experimental and uncompromising as ever) I saw them at the second ever Big Day Out Sydney 1993 then a few nights later saw them at Sydney University. How's this for a line up?

Lee Ranaldo has put out a new solo album, Between The Times and the Tides. I definitely recommend it! Has a fairly classic Sonic Youth sound, but with some wonderful pop vocal melodies some awesome tunes in there. Personally, I think it's even better than Thurston Moore's solo album from last year!
It's currently streaming at Spotify, or on Rolling Stone here: http://www1.rollingstone.com/hearitnow/player/leeranaldo.html
