So, it's confirmed. Madness will be their first real single from The 2nd Law.

An electronic cross between 'I Want To Break Free' and 'Faith'.
"You've had a fight with your girlfriend and she goes off to her mum's house for the day and you're on your own going: "What did I say?"" says Matt, describing the song's inspiration. "I'm sure a lot of blokes have that experience in the early stages of relationships where you go: "Yeah, she's right, isn't she?".
A calm, sweet and languid song that is surprising to find so early in the tracklist.
Electro arrangements are obviously drawing from Depeche Mode, similar to Undisclosed Desires from The Resistance.
Lyrics
"...is it my love or is it just madness..." "...some kind of madness taking control..." "...seen the light..." "...what you need..."

Discuss.

So...who cares what it's about? Matt knows what he's doing with lyrics, more or less, and can make "what a song's about" generic enough that you can interpret the words to mean what you want.

That said, from reading that interview, it seems that this album is going to be a bit more about interpersonal communication that mass communication. I get the sense there will be more "I/You" lyrics than "We/Us". I'm probably wrong, but it would be nice for him to go back to that style of writing.

Well, I guess Matt said in that interview that's it's just about fighting when you're in a relationship kinda stuff. Hopefully not as shallow as NME wrote it out to be.

Yeh I'm looking forward to the more personal side of this album, especially chris' songs. I think if there is one thing muse lack for me it's songs on simple, personal matters. I think that's why I love escape so much, not that I have experienced it myself but I can hear what Matt is trying to say about what he went through, through the music and pure emotion. I can understand that and connect with it far easier than topics of world crisis and politics.

So yeh, I look forward to the family/baby songs and madness sounds interesting

Edit: I got from the interview that Matt fell out with Kate who went back to her mums and he went to grovel. Sounds like teenage angst to me :chuckle:

The first thing that came to me was the "who's bum is that?" faux pas! That seems a bit trivial to write a song about though.

I can imagine it though "what did I say wrong?" "Is it wrong to admire the pert bums of fans in Muse knickers?" "It is?" "Okay I see your point".

;)

Just adding that, jokes aside, I expect it was based on something deeper than Matt was willing to divulge in an interview.

based on what I've heard/read so far, this song doesn't sound good to me... those personal themed lyrics were really good and touching back in the Showbiz/OoS era but nowadays that sort of stuff just comes out with too much cheese to stir some real emotions.
also, I think I'm one of the few people here who likes the world's end/mind-control/political conspiracies/worldwide revolution/aliens/sci-fi - themed lyrics a lot more. don't know why, I think they're more exciting than the usual 'oh what am I without you' stuff so common in today's music.

Feel the same way after the interview. I'm not really getting into what the song's about conceptually.
And I'm sort of fine with the larger scale (mainly cause as you said, it's not the same love theme that's so repeated), but I guess it depends on how it's done. RBS and Debase Mason's Grog for example I think are great with the more revolutionary/conspiracy themes.

The lyrics don't have to be absolutely amazing to make it or break it for me, but if the music sucks well then I don't give a flying fuck about what you're singing about.

Hopefully it was just NME being overdramatic and stupid, but they did a really good job of making even me feel like all the songs they described were terrible.
That's either really bad, or really good, journalism.
I'm not going to dwell on the article too much, though, and by Sept I'm sure I'll have forgotten what song was supposed to sound like what, anyways. :D

But, descriptions involving phrases like "Prince sex grunts" and there being a second song as "silly" as Survival sort of made my heart drop a bit when I read them.

And, I know people will hate me for this forever, but reading that Chris wrote/sang not one but two songs put me in a funk, at first. (and not the good kind.)
I'm still trying to psychoanalyze how badly I reacted to reading that.

To make a long story longer, I sort of liked Matt's description of Madness. I mean, it was a bit cliche and obvious, but I guess it's still the sort of thing girls like to hear. Which also means it might be a total fabrication.

His songs have so much potential to be awesome. Plus, they'll be a nice contrast to Matt's voice.

As far as Madness goes, I'm having a hard time imaging a cross between "I Want To Break Free" and "Faith" with an electronic twist. Since I like those two songs, I'm hoping I'll like their bastard lovechild by way of Muse.

SerpentSatellite
25-07-2012, 11:40 AM
I'm probably not doing myself any favours here, because it's very very early, but I'm helping a neighbor out, and they're making me wait endlessly... and sometimes I'm not even that coherent awake. There's a lot of great stuff that my head says to me, and then I put it in print, and I feel like a 5 year old wrote it... not even close to the same.

I'm not as concerned with Chris writing two songs. I think it's kind of cool, and I think it's a nice thing for them to let him do, considering.
I was a lot more concerned with the singing, unless I completely misinterpreted what I read.
I only read the article once, and probably won't again, because I felt a lot of the song descriptions were (hopefully) a bit detrimental, and I don't want to go into the album dwelling on what it's "supposed" to sound like or be about.

I'm pretty sure Matt's voice specifically is one of the things that attracts me to Muse in the first place. Like I previously said, absolutely not the only thing, but very important to me.
Again, just my opinion, but going too far into the "different singer/different writer" thing can often feel like you're listening to a side project, or a completely different band.
Just a personal problem, on my end.

Sometimes with other bands, if there's a song or two that are not sung by the frontman, when I hear them, I can't help but think "oh there's that song sung by the other guy, meh." Like they said, it's so often the main vocalist that attracts me to the music.

And I'll lock the gate
And I'll never snooze
I choose to survive
Whatever it takes

You won't find me in bed
I'll keep up late
And I'll reveal my strength
At Goldie Hawn's place

Yes I am prepared
To stay alive
And I won't forgive
Pasta is mine

Because I choose to thrive

So yeah, about the actual single. Not sure how I feel about it being compared to I want to Break Free and Faith. Definitely sounds like it'll be...interesting.

Yeah, I think I answered someone's question, and it led to a whole other line of conversation... I think I'm also talking about Madness in a different thread, ironically.
Simple tasks are hard for me at 5am, and in the 100 degree heat in my car on my 5 year old cell phone... *sigh*

The above description of the song, coupled with the Zane interview from the Survival premiere are still very... confusing.
And still disapointed that NME came off more like they wanted to name drop than actually talk about the single.

It's the best promotion for the album, and the single itself, that they could hope for. Besides, they're also the band that plays the main theme for the Olympics, so their performance will be even more highlighted

Matt's had his good moments with lyrics, but a lot seem to overlook the shitty ones he'd put out.

Yeah, the bulk are fairly sub par. That's why (with the exception of Survival,NSC and Guiding Light) I'm generally not bothered by the lyrics.

I don't care about the lyrics to be honest. Never have. It's not what drew me to muse in the slightest, when I was first discovering them I didn't have a clue what Matt was saying half the time or didn't get what he was on about

It's fun how everyone brand everything as cringey or cheesy these days but are fine with lyrics like "Everything about you is so easy to love, they’re watching you from above" or "I don't love you and I never did" can imagine them releasing a song with those lyrics right now and everyone going "OMG! what a cheesfest!"

*clap......clap....clap.clap.clap*

thank you. Old fans from OoS days dissing on newer Muse are just feeling the hipster syndrome. IE if its popular it sucks. That being said Absolution and Origin are still miles better than their 2 albums since then, with the exception of Exogenesis. All I'm saying is I'm tired of people all "this is shit what happened to muse" etc. Survival has A tuned guitars ala Citizen Erased and two large instrumental sections filled with riffs and guitar licks and people still complain.

Forgot to mention that if you listen to it with decent headphones the bass is so fucking powerful. Its just a great song instrumentally. I'd never noticed it on my crappy laptop speakers til I got it on my ipod.

I adore the bass. I think I have listened to that song every morning since it came out and I'm yet to get tired of it. But that bass oh my god, makes me want to grab my acoustic guitar (which in can hardly play) and grind with it Bellamy style

Well, if I'd heard the lyics of those songs first before hearing the music, I'd probably thought the same thing. And Madness may well be an amazing song. But all I have to comment on atm is a possible lyric. And a mental image based on what Matt said in an interview. I'm certinly not some hipster. Lolz.

I know this is a thread about Madness and I'm sorta hijacking it with Survival discussion but what about the vocals? I can see people complaining about the lyrics but the same people bash the vocals.

I personally love the urgency he sings with during the second (heavier) verse. Particularly "I will light the fuse!" Idk just something about Matt singing like that gets me.

On Stryker's pic of his notes, under Madness, i think its lyrics.
'Is it my love or just madness
Some kind of madness taking control'

Stryker said Matt's lyrics were very personal and it does makes sense. He could have written them down to ask Matt about them

Hm. Cringey.

I must admit, I don't really see why the lines are cringey. I also don't think the line "is it my love or just madness" makes full sense. I mean if the line was "is it love or just madness" that would make sense, but "my love"? Perhaps it's something else.

What "my love" refers to Kate? As in - "is it that cute blond bird I'm going out with or is it just madness?" ? :chuckle:

No, sorry to be pedantic but that still doesn't really make sense.

Yes, and Muse do quite well with electronica. I quite liked Take a Bow for that reason. I hope it's like that, but maybe smoother at first just so we understand it's still a song about love...and not burning in Hell for your sins.

Probably a day or two before it's released. Zane Lowe does Saturday's on Radio 1, doesn't he? The single's released on a Monday so I guess that's a possibility.

I don't see why someone would need it. We already have video footage of the OoS set and no one misses anything by not seeing the other part of the set. And wasn't that part already broadcasted on BBC?

You must not have a high definition television...frankly I could care less about that crappy multi-angle camera system they came up with, I want a pro-shot (like HAARP) Blu-Ray of Reading/Leeds so I can sit in my living room get stoned and enjoy me some new live Muse.

There's a difference between what's asked and what they'll give. I would love an HD pro shot DVD or R/L, hell we all would. But the chances are very low because they've given us a lot of footage from it already. A gimmicky, proprietary, app it was, but it was still footage.

Not necessarily, Arctic Monkey's version of Come Together from the Opening was released immediately and the Closing Ceremony is the 13th, Madness is the 20th. As I highly doubt there'll be a physical release, that's plenty of time to get it on iTunes or at least an iTunes version.

Which is a pity, because there's a lot of scope for an interesting video with a lot of their songs. Of the last few videos, Uprising was decent, Resistance was abysmal and, well, UD never had a chance of being good with that dancing girl.
