View Full Version : Survival - would you like an instrumental version?

The comedy lyrics & vocals are awful.
Edit: Fair play, in the context of the album this has grown on me. But I would still like a version without the lyrics. The monster riffage should be unspoilt!!

the lyrics are horrific, but I like the way Matt is singing the song. still, since new lyrics doesn't seem to be a realistic option, I request an instrumental.

We can always rest assured that if we want to read fantastically positive stuff about Muse the Official Muse forum is the place to come... not...
Matt's vocal's are awesome. The lyrics are simple, direct and motivating. He sings with real passion. It's already on my running list. Simples.
CHEERS MUSE, you've totally smashed this one :D

The vocals are some of Matt's best, and I don't really understand why people are surprised by the lyrics, as if Muse songs have ever been elaborate in their lyrical content...
Anyway, an instrumental would be cool, but not as good as the original IMO.

It's not that Muse lyrics are usually good, it's just that they're usually not this bad.

I like that song. :chuckle:
It seems like it's trying to mimick the piano line to that song using the choir, oddly.
Yes, if it means there's no choir in it. Yes I won't shut up about that.
But also yes because I tend to like instrumentals anyway.

I think the vocals are amazing. So emotional in a different way to the normal angst. So much positivity is what we neeeeeed! And the lyrics are allowed to be lame, it's going to be played in tons of country's on the TV

Nothing can claim the 'shittiest lyrics ever' award from NSC :phu:. C'mon 'Our love will be forever, and we'll die, we'll die together...'. 'snowflakes in an ocean' Cheryl Cole has better lyrics than that  (And that's saying something considering she's the most talentless sack of pooh ever :p).
The instrumental bit is the best of the whole song, imo (that BEEEEFFFFINESS is divine!), but Matt's vocals are fucking brilliant throughout. We get a chesty voice and two lots of crazy falsettos, along with hilarious chanting about racing and winning and fuse and lose . It's pure comedy, lyrically speaking, but adds to the hyperbole of the song.
I'd love an entirely instrumental version anyways, cos that would be teh awesomes! :D

Oh come on. NSC's lyrics a crap but they're not crapper than:
Royal Canadian blended
The spicy aroma had mended me
Matured for years and imported
Into my glass you poured it
And you're the only reason
That I remain unfrozen
Suppose it stands to reason
That you would turn on me
You're so solid
You're so solid
It burns inside of me
Cause you're so solid
It burns inside of me
And Wild Turkey's been chosen
It's caramel nose can smell me
Arbourler/Jameson, I love you

While these lyrics are v bad, I've always thought of Sober as one of Matt's earliest examples of tongue-in-cheek songwriting. It seems like he's taking the piss, to me, and using a song about alcohol to express that. Plus, it in no way puts me off the song. I barely notice the lyrics, tbh.
Meanwhile, in NSC that's all I notice, haha. You could argue that it's also a pisstake, but the criminal level of cheese in the latter makes it worse, imo. It's almost on the same vomit-inducing level as Britney Spears's 'love from above'-type lyrics. He's rambling about forever/together, halos and snowflakes for fuck's sake .
The title alone is enough to make me want to put a bag over my head... Neutron Star Collision?! :chuckle: Lolwut Matthew! Most of all, though, the sappy, lovey-dovey crap is why I hate NSC's lyrics and why the song is very cringeworthy despite it being annoyingly catchy in places :ninja:
I was searching
You were on a mission
Then our hearts combined like
A neutron star collision
I have nothing left to lose
You took your time to choose
Then we told each other
With no trace of fear that...
Our love would be forever
And if we die, we die together
Lie, I said never
Because our love would be forever
The world is broken
And halos fail to glisten
You try to make a difference but
No one wants to listen
Hail the preachers fake and proud
Their doctrines will becloud
Then they'll dissipate
Like snowflakes in an ocean
ETC :vomit:
HOWEVER! Despite all that, it's still brilliant to sing and over-gesticulate along to at gigs... hilarious arm-waving fun!

I remember a great NSC parody where it went something like this:
"My looooove is for cheddar!
And if we dine, we dine together
And brie, I will neeeevvveeeerrrr
'Cos my love, it is for cheddaaaarrrr!"
If only I could remember how it went...
The verse with preachers, halos and snowflakes I actually found quite good in NSC. The chorus and other verse though... it's more sickly sweet than trying eat everything in a sweet shop in one go. Shame - good rhythm, good riff, good pianos. Goddamn Twilight.

Yeah, in songs such as Sober, I don't notice the silly lyrics, but like you said, in songs like NSC and Survival it's much more noticeable. I think it's because he's singing in such a slow, serious, ridiculously earnest way...it's just cringey.

I have a text file with this one.
I was hungry, Chris was on a mission
Then he went and told me that his favourite cheese was Edam
Now I've nothing left to lose
He took his time to choose
And I feel that I must tell it to the
world that
My love is for cheddar
And we'll eat, we'll eat together
And brie, I say never
'Cause my love is for cheddar!
The world is broken, halos fail to glisten
I told Dom to get cheddar but he refused to listen
And, I'm sure you'll agree
As Chris and I both see
That honestly, brie is a gay cheese
'Cause my love is for cheddar
And we'll eat, we'll eat together
And brie, I say never
'Cause my love is for cheddar!

I would love an instrumental version of Survival because I love the instrumental bits but the song is truly weird. Why is Matt singing in that silly voice? Why are Muse imitating Queen? I could never stand Queen, they were rubbish. Why use the style of another band when you have a wonderful style of your own?:( I've listened to it quite a few times in the hope it would grow on me but it's no good. It's a really poor song. And what's all that clicking business? Sounds like a badly scratched vinyl record. I'd say a cracked 78 but you're all too young to know what that means!

I don't think Muse are imitating Queen. The guitar in the first half (about 3 minutes in) does sound Queen-ish and the choral stuff but there's plenty more that is different. The guitar from 4.00 in the below clip is more Muse, I think. It's pretty amazing. Also, I love the way Matt sings 'I'm gonna win' at 2.26. Not Freddie-like at all :p

Interesting what hatred you got from saying Queen is rubbish. I have to admit I don't get their genious either. Never been a fan, but I spent now a couple of hours listening through some songs, and I still don't get the genious. I wouldn't call them rubbish, though. I do like the few 70ies hits. Btw their fans must have been devastated by the change of sound in 80ies ;) Muse are extremely faithful to their early sound compared to Queen.
Tbh I also don't quite understand why you say Muse are imitating Queen. Sure there are influences but Survival does not sound like Queen imo. Which parts in your opinion make it sound like Queen? The choir?
Just a general side note: I don't get why people have to express their opinions of music in terms of either rubbish/sucks/shit, or epic/masterpiece/genious. Most of the music is imo fairly good or somewhat poorer, there's no need to use superlatives all the time.

wtf? best part of this song are the vocals. The way matthew sings "im gonna win" in the second part of the song together with the choir is sooooo fucking epic, god i love it^^
edit: being influenced by queen is NEVER a bad thing

Really? You've got "There can be only one" from USoE as a prime example of Queen. Personally, when I heard the first few seconds of the piano in Survival I said "Oh look, it's Bohemian Rhapsody".

Really?
I think the best thing about Muse instrumentals is that you can always hear the underlying layers that aren't as obvious as it was on the full record, like the synth in Starlight which I found really, really nice.
So personally I'd really love to hear an instrumental version of Survival, without the choral parts as well. It'd be better if we could get the roots (or whatever it's called  ), though that's highly unlikely unless it becomes DLC for Rock Band  or maybe a DTS version of The 2nd Law, like the DTS version of The Resistance, where you can select a channel or something to listen to specific instruments.

I never had a particular desire to listen to an instrumental version...I mean, there are no vocals during the guitar shredding, and that's the best part of the song

You people must hear Queen resemblances in awful lot of music. You probably also call Michael Jackson just another Queen imitatator too (that connection even I heard the other day).
I can't really say of all Queen songs as I'm not familiar with them, but when it comes to Bohemian Rhapsody I wouldn't say Muse imitates them. Yes combining choir (harmonies in case of Queen? Not sure about the vocabulary) with the simple piano pling-pling-pling-pling is similar to Bohemian Rhapsody at the point Hannah referred to, but in Survival the piano develops into old fashioned bluesy kind of thing (which has been done zillion times but still works) whereas I can't hear any trace of blues in Bohemian Rhapsody, well unless you assume all guitar rock is just inheritance from blues. Oh there isn't even simple pling-pling-pling-pling with piano on Survival, the choir does the rhythm
Shit, and here I am discussing genres again although I've promised myself not to get into that anymore ;) Well they puzzle me.
Anyway, I get somewhat annoyed when people say Muse imitate this or that band. Imho rock music is made of relatively simple ingredients, and if you really want to, you can hear the influences of different past bands in all modern rock music. What Muse and Queen have in common is usage of harmonies, piano, guitar, bass and drums (), and pompousity of course. And catchy, good melodies quite often, I would say. But Queen was much more disco later in 80ies than Muse has so far been, and I didn't hear jazzy/bluesy influences in the Queen songs I listened to.
Oh btw on topic: With instrumental version, do people mean a song stripped off the choir and Matt's vocals, or replacing them with instruments? Because I don't think just stripped off version would work, at all. Replacing with instruments would remove the effect of lyrics some people don't like, but I don't see the point in that as people seem to like Matt's singing.

Speak for yourself.
Queen (their first album) being their heaviest album produced fantastic tracks. A band that can produce songs like Keep Yourself Alive, Liar, Great King Rat and then turn around and drop songs that are completely different on me. Each album was different. That's why they are a fantastic band. Why they are one of my favourite bands.
It's part of the reason I like Muse. An ability to do songs that don't always sound the same.

So now you're generalizing? I don't get what you're trying to point out in those awfully long posts that don't make sense a lot of times. I don't mean to be rude but there's a reason why everyone's somewhat against seeing you post.
Besides, we've never claimed that Muse is COPYING Queen. We are just saying there are several instances where Queen's influence can be heard clearly or where it bears similarities to this certain established 'Queen' sound. And that is especially audible in certain works of Muse. Such as 'Survival'. That's just what we're trying to point out.
(Inb4 someone says it's not we, just me. )
Oh yeah, back on topic. Don't we eventually get the instrumental versions of the album tracks, as in on Warner's official website or something? I heard there were official instrumentals like for OoS uploaded somewhere.

An instrumental with the choir and vocals stripped out? I like them because you can hear more details in the music that way, for the most part, and yes, sometimes I do prefer them to the original song.
@Raiga Kagekami: Yup.
Seems to me the dispute comes from whether imitating something, copying something, sounding like something, screaming of something, being something or being able to replace vocals with vocals of other song are referring to approximately same level of resemblance. I took it as if they were, but I guess not. Whatever.

I'm starting to wonder whether the picture you sometimes send as a reply ("You're retarded") was sent to you by someone who tried to communicate with you. It didn't even occur to you that I might have chosen to reply "wtf do you mean" to demonstrate what a stupid reply that is?

Yep, I didn't want to mention my frustration of trying to communicate with youngsters who lack the patience for reading and understanding more than two lines of text at time. Unfortunately I cannot describe even relatively simple thoughts on music shortly and unambiguously in English (probably not even in my native language, never tried), and I do not understand nuances or connotations too well. Quite often even lame language skills are enough for discussion, but that requires effort from all parties. Obviously you like most members of this forum choose not to discuss but to nitpick about semantics.

Well I think that is interesting only for someone who knows the version with all vocals already, because they are in your example and in Survival an essential part of the song. Sure it makes it easier to hear the instruments and understand how a song is built, for anyone who is interested in such things (not saying I personally wouldn't be occasionally).
Edit: tried to make the post appear smaller but doesn't seem to work... Now it's all fucked up.

I can't think of a modern example quickly, but this song was first written instrumental and this is the popular version I learned to know first:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLDEi-r7FDU
But it has also been performed with vocals, like here:

This is actually what I understand with instrumental version of a song, i.e. melody of vocals is performed with an instrument.
