Inventive, outrospective, out of this world....

electronica in it's purest and most spectacular form.

their version of 'Popcorn' is by far their best known song and by far the best version of that track floating around, but the rest of their stuff is amazing too. one of the best live bands ever.

Matt B's message reminded me of this amazing band. I got their live cd over the summer. Reminds me of when I discovered them in 2001..that was a perfect summer. :)

Kraftwerk are amazing, especially their 70s output before digital synths were invented...Second only to Klaus Schulze when it comes to electronic music.

Kraftwerk is a band I have much respect for... they represent the origin of much of the music I listen to today. Their "Mix" album is one of the most consistantly listenable CDs I own.

The Mix Version of Autobahn... 9 1/2 minutes long and it never drags. Amazing.

I love the original album version of Autobahn, 22 minutes of genius synth sounds.

Yes, this too is good. I do like that the longer original has car sounds created by synthesizers... I believe the ones on Mix are just samples.

My favorite song of theirs is probably Showroom Dummies... reminds me of the Autons!

I just discovered "The Model" - fuck me it's like sex in the form of sound haha... it's funny how German they sound - it probably heightens the whole sex robot thing that Kraftwerk make me think of... I bet some of Muse's twinkly piano stuff was inspired by them.

I'm going to start looking around for more stuff by them and synth bands lol I love it... I found it on Dad's "Greatest Hits of New Romantic" even though it's not New Romantic, not really... it's strange for me - I normally hate mainstream stuff, but stuff like this and OMD, Spandau Ballet etc are definetly pop-ish, and it's addictive... if only this stuff was considered pop instead of the shit kids love now like McFly, Girls Aloud etc.

I've been listening to Radio-Activity and Trans-Europe Express quite a lot recently. They are both really amazing albums, especially the former, which has some of their coolest synth sounds ever. Ohm Sweet Ohm is so strange.

Die Mensch-Maschine was the second Kraftwerk album that I heard. It's quite good, but I don't know if I'd rank it as highly as some of their other work. Still, The Robots is absolutely amazing, although I think I prefer the more recent versions over the original.

Have you heard any of their earlier stuff from before they started using synths? That's really strange.

at the time, kraftwerk were pioneers, rather than mainstream 'pop'. quite odd when you listen to it now :erm:

Well I suppose they were - but now I reckon that the genre of Synth Pop has died, and there's so much more that's new and revolutionary now since that time - so when considered now, I suppose it's Pop, maybe Dance if they're lucky...

It's definitely worth having a listen to, but it is far less accessable than any of their synth-oriented albums. They sounded a little like Faust at times, and they were clearly part of the krautrock scene. It's quite wild and noisy in comparison to all of their later work.

I've only heard a few of their newer versions of old tracks, but I'll have to try and get a copy of Radio-Activity, as I think it's one of the best songs they ever did.

well yeah, sythensizers have become more complex, considerably more complex so possibilities are endless, then there's samplers.... but in the rock world, none of this is utilised in anyway, the real pioneers in music at the moment are in the hip hop/dance world (i use those genres extremely vaguely)

but anyway, what's considered 'synth pop' now, a fair few of the bands considered themselves 'punk' at the time and more 'punk' than what we'd think as 'punk' today.

'pop-punk' is the definition of an oxymoron  anything 'pop-punk' like green day is about as punk as girls aloud.

and hip-hop is awesome, seriously. i wish people would be more open-minded :(

I have their album Computer World on vinyl and bought it back in the early 80's.....yes, I am that old! :p

At that time, I was in a dance troupe and we did a performance to their song "Numbers". There's another German band from that time period called Trio and we also danced to their song "Da da da...".

Die Mensch Maschine is great, but damn, it's so depressing to listen to. I prefer Computer Welt over it. It's so fun to listen to, and of course, my love for early Kraftwerk (Ralf Und Florian era) is just immense. How can you say no to Kraftwerk? :)

It sounds quite upbeat and jolly compared to Radio-Activity! ;)

But you're right. I like that about it, though. It fits with their robotic image very well. I would love to see somebody put an extended version of Metropolis against the film of the same name by Fritz Lang. It would look and sound amazing, I think.

Florian has also officialy left Kraftwerk. No comment was made as to why. No surprise.

For live perfomances his bald head will be a terrible loss, but Stefan Laffte (I think that was his name), is a very nice replacement. Very interesting to look at too...
