arguably the greatest guitarist ever, made some pretty nifty songs too, such as Voodoo Child(slight return), Fire and Purple Haze,
also can anyone tell me the difference, if any, between Voodoo Child and Voodoo Chile , im think the riff is fairly the same and the lyrics different but im not too sure

Voodoo Child is a 15 minute epic near the beginning of Electric Ladyland, Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) is at the end and has the killer riff.
Jimi is awesome.

Voodoo Chile = 15 mins
Voodoo Child (Slight Return) = Rifftastic
But both are extraordinarily good.

It's about time to bump this thread. :D
I listen to him a lot lately, and started to *really* appreciate his music ... what a great lyricist, composer, singer, as well as a genius guitarist (needless to say)! I LOVE 'All Along the Watchtower' (Bob Dylan cover), everything about the song is just beautiful and exciting.

I love all three of the Jimi Hendrix Experience albums.
Axis is one of my favourite albums ever, its just at the point when they were writing consistently brillinatly and before they went into 10 min over the top jams. I dont mind 10 min jams but i prefer the songs, and so many people forget that the songs they made were awesome.

Yes, only four albums, but Electric Ladyland is the equivalent to a double album in length, so it can count as two albums in a way. And there is an absolute shitload of studio outtakes available. He must have recorded at least 50 albums worth of material in the studio.
I think Voodoo Chile is much better than Voodoo Child (Slight Return). Jimi's guitar playing is much better on it, and the interaction between the organ and guitar is amazing.

did he really though?,i mean there could have been millions around that era who lived up to his potential.
I dont think there was anything else like him myself. At the time the rockiest thing people were hearing was the who and the rolling stones whilst the beatles were discovering their musical experimentation. Then along came this wild dude playing a mix of rock, psychadelia, jazz and blues with full on distortion. Eric Clapton (known then as 'God' by fans) and Pete Townsend (the Who) both said they considered giving up the music buisness when they heard him because it was what they'd been reaching for, but far better and done with amazing ease and showmanship.
In terms of was he over rated i think he is actually under rated in some apects. Because some people say he's the best guitarist ever people compare him in terms of technique to the likes of Steve Vai and focuss on random jams and endless solos they end up then saying he's over rated.
I can't listen to that stuff personally. I love his music, his songs, his sound, his rawness, his showmanship and that's an aspect that is, depspite being logically the most important, nearly always ignored.
EDIT: The other thing that annoys me is that it should be 'they' as The Jimi Hendrix Experience were a trio and each of the members were highly important to the music.

Hendrix vs. Vai?
 .
You may as well listen to a robot instead of listening to Vai, Satriani, etc. The guitar work of late 60's/early 70's guitarists such as Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore seemed to have their heart and souls pulsing through their licks and riffs.
Hendrix deserves every bit of credit he gets, the man was simply a genius.

yeah, what i mean is when i hear guys like those, it's always heavily layered in effects and lots of distortion for lots of sustain, hendrix, page etc didn't really have that in the 60's and 70's, a marshall on 10 and a fuzz at most.
the less gear involved, the more talent and skill is involved.

I heard Jimi was never confident with him as a vocalist, but after he heard Dylan, he realized he doesn't have to follow the melody ... it's cool to hear Hendrix sings like Dylan in Watchtower, Rolling Stone (of course), and in Crosstown Traffic.

Call him the most innovative, maybe. Like you I'm suspicious of the title 'greatest' in any context, but then again if anyone deserves to be in the running it's got to be Hendrix out in front of the pack of contenders. Nice that you included Les Paul :) He's often left out of consideration when rock guitar is discussed, and yet his style of playing (not to mention his eponymous axe!) influenced everyone who came after him, including Jimi.
Edgar Winter? He's not a guitarist, is he? Are you thinking of Ronnie Montrose? RM was the guitarist on this most famous record by the Edgar Winter Group:

there are lots of other great guitarists who you can easily rank as a good as hendrix, but hendrix is the definition of rock guitar if that makes sense :)

To be honest I thought he was already past it by the time he died. I absolutely love the 3 Experience albums - they are literally 3 of my favourite albums of all time. But after they broke up Hendrix took too many drugs and ditched actual songs for hour long guitar solos (i.e. Woodstock), which was just painfully dull. So while i'd definitely be interested to hear those unreleased tracks anyway, my hopes won't be that high.

Well he only performed live with the Band of Gypsys, and I can see how in this thread we'll mostly discuss his work with the Experience, so it just feels a bit disrespectful to leave Noel and Mitch out of it.
Well, but you don't have to. Feel free to talk about whatever aspect of his career that you like. I'm sort of with you anyway - the Experience era is how I discovered Jimi myself. I do like to explore his work beyond the trio though.

I actually really recommend listening to the US release of the first Experience album, being:
1. Purple Haze
2. Manic Depression
3. Hey Joe
4. Love or Confusion
5. May This Be Love
6. I Don't Live Today
7. The Wind Cries Mary
8. Fire
9. Third Stone from the Sun
10. Foxy Lady
11. Are You Experienced?
In terms of both songs and flow that track listing is unbeatable imo. Pure psychedelic genius. Oh, and wonderfully noisy. :yesey::happy:
Sadly you may need to arrange it yourself though, as the record company don't sell it like that any more, but have butchered it and made it into a 17 track bloated thing with every b-side under the sun rammed seemingly randomly into it. Bastards.
Hi, how may I help you?

Castles Made of Sand and the Wind Cries Mary come to mind. Crosstown Traffic, Hey Joe and Purple Haze too.
And, well, anything :p

This, but definitely get purple haze at least. that's the song that made me want to pick up the guitar :awesome:
i mainly like the earlier stuff to be honest, but some of the later songs are still pretty amazing.

I prefer the earlier stuff by miles myself, because they're actual concentrated brilliant songs, however noisy, cliché breaking and genre smashing they may be (certainly for the time)! While the later post-Experience stuff is just hours worth of loose, usually fairly standard blues based jamming, which I actually find fairly dull, meandering, repetitive, and ultimately pointless.

Now look, unless you have the right-hand Strat set up left-handed, you ain't doing it right. Oh - and your Marshalls should be set to full. Wide open, all 10s across the board. OK, now you're set. :p

Hendrix didn't use his Marshalls with everything on full. I'd know as I use the same Marshalls and a Strat :p

That's what I've always heard though. See here (http://www.musicplayer.com/article/the-gear-jimi/Mar-05/4046). Here's the relevant excerpt:
"Hendrix’s Marshall of choice was the 100-watt Super Lead driving two 4x12 cabs, and his standard backline would quickly grow to three Super Leads and six 4x12s. He plugged his guitar into one amp, and linked it to the others by running a cable from an adjacent input (the Super Leads had four inputs) to the second amp’s input jack, and so on.
This was a long way from the band’s humble beginnings, when Hendrix and Noel Redding shared one miked 100-watt Marshall during the sessions for their first album. Because Hendrix performed with his amp settings nearly always on full, his systems wore out fast."
OK, nearly always, but STILL. His road manager always wondered how Jimi even played like that, with everything all the way up, because when the roadies tested his set-up before concerts all they ever got was feedback. :D

There's loads of myths, people just repeat what they've been told without using their ears. Volume being full makes sense, not EQ though, his sound was too warm for that.
Marshalls on full is more like generic classic rock, not psychedelic blues with fuzz bozes:

^ tbh I don't even see how Hendrix could have had just the volume all the way up as you speculate. I wonder how he was able to control it.

Do you need any more? He then dedicates the song to Bob Dylan's grandmother, who he claims is at the side of the stage.

Guitars have their own volume controls to start with and I find guitars easier to control at that volume, resonant feedback/infinite sustain is far easier.
If Hendrix as I believe set up his amps with Channel 1 volume full and all EQ controls around 5, it's not that loud (In guitarist terms anyway ) or distorted, but with 3 of them doing it, that would be interesting.

Terrific, lengthy think-piece on Jimi Hendrix's performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and his (in some ways, surprising) politics is featured on the radio program "Studio 360," airing now: LINK. (http://beta.studio360.org/2010/nov/18/jimi-hendrixs-star-spangled-banner/) Experts interviewed include musicians and Hendrix scholars.
