I know,I can't believe I'm not the one that started this thread. Rufus is everything I wish for in a man. And his new album is coming out in about a month. With a dvd of the show in San Francisco I was at :D . Did I say that before?

Rufus Wainright's = Boring.

Rufus said he would never have concidered covering it when he would have heard Buckleys version before he recorded his.

I think his version is wonderful though, and more accessible than Buckley's version, less showing off, more feeling.

And Rufus' live version is mesmerizingly beautiful, eventhough he fucks it up pianowise half of the time.

I have to completely disagree. Rufus' version is so bland, and uninteresting. I like RW, don't get me wrong, I just thought that was too mediocre and boring.

I saw him on Tuesday in Liverpool and OH. MY. GOD. He was so amazing, and Mr. Little Animal, you're right. His Hallelujah live... I was nearly in tears, it pissed on Buckley. There was Martha and a backing singer doing the most gorgeous harmonies over him and his encore went on for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages and he dressed as a wizard for 'Oh What a World' and wow. I'm still on a post gig high now.

That sounds like what he did in the San Francisco concert I saw. He brought a band and backup singers, not Martha though. And he was wearing the wizard robe. (he looks damn cute in it doesn't he?)

In Amsterdam he never brought the band, since he said it was too expensive to bring them all over. He would have the money if we would stop downloading his album and just bought it he said :).

The encores always go on for a long time. In SF he played 7 extra songs!

You always get a gig high out of him, the shows are really intense or something, he's just mesmerizing. My friend called me a few days after we went to the show and told me he missed him!

He's definately one of the most.. I don't know, 'got your money's worth' out of him gigsy things I've seen. The fact he did so many songs and had a fantastic rapport with the audience, yup, still in awe now. (3 days and still going) The Philharmonic was just such an amazing venue for it, with the art deco ness and aaah. I'd love to see him just do an acoustic, when he did the songs with just him at the piano...
He was absolutly adorable in the wizard robe... I've got this picture, but alas it's not brilliant as I took it with my phone *sings* I'm a little tea pot...

Yes, that's a crappy pic. Brings back memories though..

I've seen him solo and acoustic twice. Once in a small living room sized venue with about a 150 people in it and one in a full sized concert hall. The small place gig was magical, the best I've ever seen and possibly felt. The big one was disappointing, the acoustics were bad and everybody sat on crappy wooden chairs, it was still good, but there was never a cozy connection.

Did he mention anything about Bush being elected? He absolutely detests the guy and I can't blame him.

By the way, there's a song of the upcoming DVD on his site (http://www.rufuswainwright.com/news.asp?newsID=14516).

Yeah, he went into a massive rant before he launched into 'Gay Messiah' he was hoping that Kerry would be elected.. I think he mentioned something about it being a significant part of his tour and "hopefully after tomorrow I won't have to say this all again."

The man is not joking- it's an odd one. I feel like there should be belly dancers in my living room when I hear it...still trying to decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. :stunned:

I'm liking "Little Sister" very much at the moment for its witty lyrics and instrumental arrangements.

i totally agree with you.....

no offense to rufus, but his hallelujah IS very bland......someone said something about buckley showing off......

it's not showing off if it's authentic.....and i haven't heard another song that has ever been quite so passionately honest........

that being said, though rufus' hallelujah is...erm.....shall we say....inferior, he does make some groovy tunes.....

love "california" and "april fools"..........though i lack his albums..... :(

I think Buckley is always showing off, sometimes with amazing result, sometimes he turns to cheesy poetic chliches and overromantic imitation of his heroes. He tried a little too hard sometimes. Still, i love Buckleys Hallelujah.

As for Rufus, see him perform Hallelujah live. It has more soul to it than Buckley's album version.

Her album's fantastic. He dedicated it to himself, cause it's all about his battle with drink and drugs and stuff... so it's like the closing of a chapter and the moving on.

Did he play everything you wanted?

I've just got back from his Manchester show.

Wow.

Not quite as good as Liverpool was last year - I was dissapointed by the new backing singers but still FABULOUS none the less. Hearing Rufus try his 'northern' accent was a hoot. Really good. Bit gutted about the lack of Vibrate and some earlier songs (he only did Beauty Mark from the first album) but otherwise it was grand :D

He's got such great legs.

i heard the manchester setlist was shorter! he played vibrate on both the shows i was at. apparently ian mckellen was at the manchester gig tho :D

i saw him last night, and although it was great, i prefered the nottingham gig. the sound was much better in there. plus we were seated which somehow seemed a lot better! the encore is so hilarious though.

Not sure if theres another thread on him, but I love the guy even though he's gay as a....gay person.

I love his voice, and his lyrics and him. He's so distinct and individual, it's what makes him appeal to me. I guess you either like him, or you don't though - theres no real inbetween.

If you want to hear some, I suggest you download/buy:

Oh What A World
Little Sister
The One You Love
14th Street
Beauty Mark
Cigerettes And Chocolate Milk
California

As I feel, they are the ones to get into him by.

He's done a couple of albums too:

Rufus Wainwright
Poses
Want One
Want Two

I love him <3 and I know a fair many others do too. He's amazing live, so if you ever got the chance to go, go on impulse and I assure you, you'd love him.

I hate that my first post on a Muse message board isn't about Muse, but when I saw the title of this thread, I just had to come and express my love.

Rufus Wainwright is amazind. His voice, his piano skills, his guitar skills - all just beautiful. Though I am Christian and totally against homosexuality, I still like this guy a lot. He reminds of me of Bellamy a lot. Just the way he breathes and holds out notes and the way his voice is kind of naisil.

Anyway, I might aswell introduce myself aswell. Hello, my name is Luke Messimer. I'm 16, live in Huntington Beach California, play lead guitar and sing in a band, play drums in another band, and play piano in my free-time. I hate to say that I only heard of Muse after Absolution came out, so I am a "new" fan. However, I did not like them at first. Not sure why. I just disliked them greatly. Then about a week later, I'd find myself humming Hysteria or Time is running Out at random parts of my day. So, finally, I just went out at bought all three albums (later picking up Hullabaloo) and fell in love right away. That was about a year ago and I've never been without one of their CD's since.

Thank you Muse for changing the way I see music and helping me see that there's still good music out there. You just got to sift through a lot of painful, unforgiving, useless crap to find it.

Glad to see another American around. We have a thread in the international section, but sadly, it's not as busy as it used to be. Welcome anyway. :)

What I've heard so far is amazing. I'm in love with this song Going to a Town.

That Little Animal
27-03-2007, 05:03 AM
Going to a town lyrics: (Expressing a lot of my own feelings and those from people around me.)

:(

I'm going to a town that has already been burned down
I'm going to a place that is already been disgraced
I'm gonna see some folks who have already been let down.
I'm so tired of America

I'm gonna make it up for all of the Sunday Times
I'm gonna make it up for all of the nursery rhymes
They never seem to want to tell the truth
I'm so tired of you America

Making my own way home
Ain't gonna be alone
I got a life to lead America
I got a life to lead

Tell me do you really think you go to hell for having loved?
Tell me in life you're (?) thinking every thing you've done is good
(I really need to know)
After soaking the body of Jesus Christ in blood
I'm so tired of America
(I really need to know)

I may just never see you again or might as well
You took advantage of a world that loved you well
I'm going to a town that has already been burned down
I'm so tired of you America

Making my own way home
Ain't gonna be alone
I got a life to lead America
I got a life to lead
I got a soul to feed
I got a dream to hear (?)
And that's all I need

Making my own way home
Ain't gonna be alone
I'm going to a town that has already been burned down

One of the saddest songs I heard in a long time.

I have just got back from London having been up to see Rufus play at The Old Vic theatre on Sunday night (27th May). What can I say this guy is amazing, fantastic songwriter/singer/musician and my god what a showman!! 3 costume changes from the stripey blazer he wore on jonathon Ross a couple of weeks ago up to the interval then Lederhosen (I kid you not!!) and for his finale stockings a jacket and a hat (a la Judy Garland). Truly one of the best live shows i have ever seen (at least until 16th June anyway!!;)).

Right! Just come back from seeing Rufus live, just got to have a little review of it as he was totally awesome! Total tosswit that I am, was nearly there before I realised I'd forgot my camera and haven't a clue how to work the one on my new moby as yet either so no pics, shame as I was only about 20 foot from him too. The sight of him in lederhosen, and earlier in a white pinstripe suit with sparkly brooches and butterflies all over it is just something you'll have to imagine if you can. He did Judy Garland's Get Happy and nearly fell off his heels a number of times which was v funny; man has he got great legs, so not fair!

Anyway, he did nearly everything off Release the Stars and recreated the sound off that which is no mean feat given it sounds like there's everything but the kitchen sink going on there with a band of just 7, not a massive orchestra. Like the album more for hearing it live, maybe even has the edge over Want Two now, not that he played much of that besides the Art Teacher and at the end of the encore, Gay Messiah (way to end Rufus).

Also learned that Tulsa is about Brandon Flowers; never knew that before. Didn't play Hallelujah which was a surprise but he played a really long set in two parts, must have been well over 20 songs, including one without any microphones at all which managed to still resonate round the whole venue (good acoustics thankfully enabled that to be pulled off). The other notable bit was Between my Legs; apparently there's some kind of contest on You Tube/ his website and the best entry from each place the tour gets to comes on stage and gets to do the spoken bit of the song; the lad from the audience who did it pulled it off in spectacular style, just a nice touch really.

Anyway, and so to bed with big smile on face firmly in place. That gig is going to take some beating...

Ah Thanks for that Sam,
Great review. We saw him a couple of years ago. My husband had no idea who Rufus was. His reaction=priceless (he's a bit camp, is he gay?). One of my favourite songs is "The Art Teacher", can still make me cry. Glad you had a great time, and it took your mind off other things. Yes he has got great legs, does he still do that strip at the end?
