I haven't really heard much Massive Attack, but what I've heard is nice. Really ambient and relaxing actually.. is that what all their songs are like, or do they do different sounding stuff too?
Mozza

their older stuff is, the new album is quite dark, my friend advised me not to buy it. Blue lines is good and mezzanine.
From what i've heard I like it

Love it. Love it. Love it.
I have Blue Lines, the 100th Window, Mezzanine and No Protection. It's all good.

Well the FIRST Massive Attack purchase and album I bought was "100th Window". I was totally hooked onto it after hearing it played in my friend's car as he took me to uni one day.
The rest is history. A HUGE MA fan, and also got my bro hooked onto them. I'm slowly appreciating their back catalogue - Got myself their Singles Box Set (so I'm up with the singles and remixes!), got myself the limited edition Mezzanine album...and also their 11 Promos DVD! I am slowly getting there!

Massive Attack are one of the better bands doing that kind of music. I like them. I like Recoil too.

Yeah, I have all of their albums. Love them love them love them. :D
Though, in my opinion, Blue Lines is their worst album. As time went on, their production got better, and they progressively got better than better. Not to say that I think 100th Window is better than Mezzanine. I mean, Mezzanine is a masterpiece. But 100th Window is a great album in its own right. More mellow and brooding.

oooooooooooo i love Massive Attack. tho ive lost my cd ans forgot what its called *shame* its the one with the black beetle on the front, Mezzanine right? anyone seen um live?
Reuben
03-08-2004, 01:22 PM
Yep! Mezzanine is the one!!! It's actually a dung beetle! And it's seriously a great album! You should get it again!
And no, I haven't seen them live. I am still kicking myself for passing up the opportunity when they came down here in 2003. It was right at the time of the child porn scandal...and I wasn't sure if they will play in Melbourne at all. But they did...and I missed out on a brilliant show....laser light show with brilliant light screens...

Everything before Mzzanine was absolute shite in my opinon. Everything post Mezzanine was fantastic. The darker the better in my opinon, 3D did a much better job on his own without the rest in my opinion.

Blue Lines - groundbreaking
Protection - relaxing
No Protection - trippy
Mezzanine - scary
100th Window - paranoid
Danny The Dog OST - soundtrack
The thing that makes Massive Attack so fantastic is their ever changing style. Apparently they're gonna go back to sampling for the new one. With Daddy G's DJ Kicks album recently too, they've still got the ear for it.
100th Window for me has the long lasting appeal. I can still just sit there listening to it start to end without doing anything else like i did day 1. But Mezzanine gets the rage burning inside of me with songs like Risingson and Mezzanine. They're both amazing in different ways. 100th Window as a whole, but Mezzanine is easier to pick out songs.
Don't wanna make this too long a post, but it sounds like i don't like the others. Blue Lines i have to be in the mood for, but the rapping on that is more fun and creative esp with Tricky on board in the early days. Protection is quite drawn out and good for bg music, but Karmacoma is a classic. No Protection is the overdubbed remix version - not for the feint of heart. Gud stoner cd. And Danny The Dog, is just very much a soundtrack. Some nice melodies and pieces of music, but not songs and not a true MA album.
Cheers then

Teardrop/Inertia Creeps are ridiculously addictive.
The new song is quite brilliant actually. Mixture of stuff from all four albums (Blue Lines, Protection, Mezzanine, 100th Window) and the video is clever. Cannot wait Collected and the live stuff from the 100th Window tour (I was at the Bristol show you see!).

I saw them last night and I was pleasantly surprised, coz I didn't know what to expect, since I've never heard them live before. The setlist was I think identical to "yours". And the hour and 50 min went faster then ever. Definitly not a gig to miss!

That's one of the most stupidest things I've ever heard. I'm all for bands using samples as long as they use it really well. Massive Attack did this for Black Milk, whilst Radiohead also did it for Idioteque. They're both awesome tracks.

Safe From Harm
Unfinished Sympathy
Sly
Risingson
Inertia Creeps
Dissolved Girl

New song sounds amazing. Album next month.
Really tempted to get tickets for London now, just hoping they come back later in the year when I have time and money.
The album leaked a while ago and I've listened a few times. As much as there are some songs on there that are among their best work, I just don't think Heligoland, as a whole, is all that...
If anyone else has listened to the leak, I'm quite interested to know what they think.
I think it's very good. Listening to it a lot now. Not as great as Mezzanine, but I don't think they'll top that personally.
Top tracks: Girl I Love You, Atlas Air, Babel and Paradise Circus of course <3
Yeah, I do like a lot of the tracks on it but every now and then you get some really dull ones that stop its momentum. Babel, Psyche and Rush Minute are three that I don't really like.
I can't remember Rush Minute at all. Psyche is a bit of a miss too.
What else I'm not keen on is the different singers you get on nearly every track. It feels more like a compilation than an album. Other than that, I really like it.

I think there's about 8 different vocalists on this album, more than any other. They are very typical picks though - sultry and soulful.
There was one track that I saw them play live last year that isn't on this LP. Bit puzzling.
It might be on the new EP. I read somewhere that they were going to release 'leftovers' on a new EP later this year.

I've found Mezzanine pretty much the perfect record for when I'm walking around town at the moment; I'm at uni on the Welsh coast so it's fairly gloomy most of the time.
There are some songs on Heligoland which I don't normally bother with, but the collaborations with Damon Albarn and especially Guy Garvey were absolutely brilliant.
