And now the move is all done. It was an unpleasant surprise to see that my bed had been delivered in lots and lots of small pieces. But, two hours later, I finished assembling it! I think anyone less comically inept than me at stuff like that could have done it in like 20 minutes, haha.

But it was a great feeling of achievement to finish it, then lie down on it and not crash down on to the floor.

Ha, that's the best version of that song I have ever heard!

Ooh you got the flat!? Awesome! Beds are incredibly hard to put together, mine had an extra but left at the end that I'm sure was meant to go somewhere, but it hasn't fallen down yet! Hope yours survived the night! That would be like the worst thing ever!
Anyone in here going ti the bleeders reunion on Friday?

_Ed_
28-11-2012, 08:07 PM
Yeah, the bed's still holding up strong! Not even creaking, which has to be a good sign.

I think it probably should have been a two-person job - having someone hold the other end of the big, heavy sides up while I did the bolts and screws would have helped. But my friends are so much better than me at stuff like this, so often when they help out they kind of take over completely. I really wanted to do it myself. So I'm stoked that I did!

Although all my muscles are still hurting two days later.

Ooh, Bleeders reunion? Hadn't heard about that.

Sorry I thought I replied to this - probably my lousy phone browser.

I am just coming back for 5 weeks. I managed to convince my company to give me a laptop and let me take 2 weeks of unpaid leave. It was basically a "I need to go home for Christmas and if you don't let me I quit" which thankfully worked in my favour.

Flatwarming's tomorrow. :) You're welcome to come along if you don't have other plans! I've put together a playlist featuring loads of Muse and quite a few songs by The Jim Jones Revue (fucking awesome band), Ash, Pet Shop Boys and more! :awesome:

Yeah, new place is great - love catching the ferry to and from work. Flatmates are a bit eccentric, but they're both overseas most of the time, so it's sweet.

Can't believe this crazy humidity! Especially as it's raining and the temperature is like 23 degrees. Makes me nervous because any time it goes like this we have a tornado!

Rich how was your flatwarming? I saw your message the day after, Sat was pretty hectc, had a two year old's birthday party, got my warrant and had our Christmas work do.

Mental!

JoBear

The nights other than Monday night have been so chilly here! Monday it was 31 degrees, 20 at midnight then come 7am it was 13 degrees and only got to about 16 all day. It's so strange! Invercargill today, probably will be it's hottest day all year at 26!

Oh, no worries! Completely understandable. Crazy time of year.

Flatwarming was good, thanks! Pretty good turnout. :) But I'd bought quite a bit of beer and wine, and heaps of them brought their own. The fridge is packed!

Our department at work had our Christmas lunch today. It was brilliant. I was organising it again this year, so I'm pretty stoked with how it went.

Haha. Ideal, really.

Here's a sneak peek of what's to come on the news: a special Christmas message from the All Blacks coach, Steve 'life of the party' Hansen.

Having travelled backwards and forwards from the UK Jo, do you have any kind of advice for jetlag? Sleeping from 7pm to 5am two nights in a row really doesn't bode well when those will be the kind of hours I'll be working next week

JoBear
17-01-2013, 09:44 AM
You'll be fine in a week! Not much you can do really...not looking forward to it next week myself as I go straight back to work less than 24 hours after I get back.

My best jetlag preventer was getting drunk in the business class lounge on the A380 then passing out in bed as soon as I got in but bit late to try that one.

JoBear
22-01-2013, 03:52 AM
Ah jetlag my friend...up at 3am unsure if I am hungry or my tummy just hurts. Also, so not fun to miss my connection in Dubai even if I got a hotel for 5 hours. I reckon if I could always fly long haul business class I wouldn't hate it as much.

Have you guys seen the music video for Supremacy? Fucking hell. I really love the song, but this is one of the worst things they've ever done.

And not only is it terrible, it's totally wrong for the song. Goths going surfing on a hot, sunny day? NO. When I listen to Supremacy, I think night-time, thunder and lightning, James Bond on a high-speed car chase along a dimly-lit, deserted country road. I do not think of goths having some fun in the sun. What have you done, Muse?!

JoBear
07-02-2013, 09:39 PM
I think someone made a Skyfall themed video.

Muse just have such a terrible track record of making music videos, let's be fair to them.

Tacticalkat
04-04-2013, 06:44 AM
Exciting! Where for? I'm okay and not so okay. Getting married in 2 weeks so super excited about that, but found out yesterday that my little brother has a tumour in his arm that has to be removed, and we are waiting to find out if it's cancer or not. So freaking out about that but trying not to worry!!!!

_Ed_
04-04-2013, 01:52 PM
Oh, jeez, sorry to hear that. Hope it all turns out OK. Thinking of you! And your brother, obviously!

But, yeah, really exciting about the wedding. :)

The job is senior writer for the national horse racing newspaper, The Informant. Not super confident - I'm probably not experienced enough to be a 'senior writer'. But hopefully they'll see potential in the examples I've sent them of my writing and want to take me on in some capacity! But at the same time I'd be really gutted to leave so many good friends at my current job - big decision to make if I do get offered something!

Not so sure about my flat now. I still love the view, the closeness to the ferry and the cats. But my flatmates are quite a bit older than me, I have nothing in common with them, and they do a few things that annoy me from time to time - one gets drunk and listens to loud music when I need to get to bed for an early shift; the other stinks up the kitchen with weed and has a habit of having loud phone conversations just outside my window when I'm trying to sleep. Just a bit annoying! Also the toilet cistern is fucked, and you often have to refill it with cups of water.

At the same time as I'm having second thoughts about it, my friends' flatmate is considering moving in with his girlfriend, so there might be a free room there. I'd be living with three good friends, and the actual flat is pretty much exactly the same (just without the harbour view), and the rent's only $110 a week! Something to think about. Would make me a Westie...

Aw that really sucks, people like that who just have no consideration for others! Dan used to have a flatmate who would come home blind drunk, pass out on the couch and leave the front door wide open with thekeys in it! The kicker was when he went away for a week but told a couple if people he met one night that they could use his room while he was away and gave them the keys. They almost burned the place down smoking weed in the bedroom, set fire to a mattress. Madness.
Shouldn't the landlord have to sort the toilet out? Sounds like it would be good to get out of there. I was really dubious about moving out West, but we love it out here! Do ittt!:)

My flat currently, my room is huge and the location is fantastic and best of all it's cheap - but I'm still going to move out in July to pay more somewhere else, in a probably less desirable area but the upsides is living with just one other person that I actually like. I can't wait to be able to hang my towels in the bathroom again.

The Veils are ecstatic to be returning to New Zealand after a four year hiatus. “We're all so excited to be able to finally head back home for this tour - I'm going to fashion a raft out of mince and cheese pies and grain waves and float into the middle of the Waitemata Harbour with a great big grin on my face.” – Finn Andrews

That show has such an unimpressive array of judges. Daniel Bedingfield? What's he done since like 2006? One of the All Saints? Really? And I don't even know who the fuck the pink-haired woman is. Stan Walker's pretty popular, I guess.

I don't know who Daniel Bedingfield is, or the pink haired girl, I know about one Stan Walker song and the All Saint is past it. Come on NZ ! I did like watching all the rubbish auditions though. Except that I heard the girl that stood out and was told she was the winner got booted off, hmmm what?

I have to do a weekly 2-hour practice session for the speech-recognition software. I find it really hard to find stuff to practise with, so I often end up doing songs - Supremacy was super fun, and I did TIRO today. :chuckle: Including such segments as, "How did it come to this question mark ooh comma yeah comma yeah comma yeah comma yeah full stop"

But then the issue of sound in that little room came up - whether we're distracted by outside noise. I mentioned that I wondered what it was like the other way around, and one of the managers said, "Well, I can clearly hear you guys from my desk when you're practising..." :stunned: :erm:

Makes me think of when I call places and get voice recognition things. I always get awkward - like I think people will notice me saying weird things but then how is anyone else in my office going to know I'm not talking to a real person?

I guess it's because the voice recognition never understands my kiwi accent and I just keep repeating the same thing over and over to "sorry, i don't understand"

Yesterday was the best birthday I've had in ages. Went and did random mid-afternoon karaoke with some friends, and it was hilarious. Highlights included an amazing duet with a workmate of Sisqo's Thong Song, and some solo efforts - including The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Madness. I think I overdid it in the end bit of Madness - my throat is still really sore more than 24 hours later!

One of my guy friends and I did a duet of Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman's Something Stupid - his idea. It's really not a song two straight dudes should sing together...

Hey, Michelle! How have you been? Did I see on Facebook that you've been in the US?

I've been good, thanks :) Just working away on my PhD project. Yourself?

Yeah I went to the US for a sound recording workshop, so made the most of it by also getting involved with a bird monitoring project for some extra experience and a bit of sight seeing including the Grand Canyon.

Loved the diversity of bird life over there and seeing the odd mammal and snake :D

The birding culture is cool too. Learned the terms and things that don't really get used here. It's inspired me to become a more involved birder. Despite seeing all the rare birds in my field sites, there are plenty of other birds that are more common that I haven't seen and some that are quite secretive which will take some work to see. It's good fun.

Rialto in New Market was playing it. I didn't see though until the last (or maybe the only) weekend it was playing and I couldn't go.

Yea I found out it was playing at Rialto but i was in Sydney that weekend which was a month before Muse was due to play there, which is all terribly ironic.

Reasonably excited for BDO, mainly for Tame Impala and Arcade Fire but i hope to be impressed by some other bands.

Have an awesome time at the BDO, guys! Weather's a bit dodge at the moment, but forecast says it'll improve. Fingers crossed. :)

Sorry for not doing my part to keep this thread alive! Have to say Muse have faded a bit in my estimations lately, and I haven't listened to them in a while. :(

The fact that they don't bother coming here any more, while The Veils had tears in their eyes at their gig here last week when they were talking about how much it meant to them to play in their home town, has played a part in that. NZ and Auckland pride to the fore for me, I guess. Plus The Veils' live show is jaw-droppingly amazing.

Michelle
16-01-2014, 10:44 PM
The same sort of thing happened to me with not listening to Muse and being disappointed in them for not coming. But after watching the latest DVD, which my dad actually wanted to put on, the Muse feelings came back. It was a brilliant concert. I started listening to them again and even looked at tickets left and flights to Sydney

I will mostly be at the main stage at BDO this afternoon for The Naked and Famous, The Hives and Arcade Fire. Hopefully other bands in between will be entertaining enough. Would have been great if The Phoenix Foundation were on the main stage too, but oh well.

JoBear
17-01-2014, 08:51 PM
How was Arcade Fire Michelle? Was considering to go see them here but at 45 I just can't justify it. I would only probably pay 30+ for The National. Actually considering flying to Dublin to see them the weekend before my 30th birthday.

Is this the first BDO you've missed Richard?

_Ed_
20-01-2014, 07:04 PM
Pretty much, yeah! I didn't go in 2005 after going to my first one in 2004, but went to every other one after that.

I was considering it, but the lineup just didn't quite excite me enough. And then I didn't really feel like it anyway after a sad week at our flat. But once I started hearing such favourable reviews for the venue I did start to almost wish I was there! Maybe next year.

But I still think Veils gave me more for my $35 the week before than I would have got from BDO for $180!

Michelle
26-01-2014, 04:08 AM
Arcade Fire were great as usual. Songs from the new album sounded awesome, I admittedly hadn't listened to the new album much before the gig but now I can't stop listening. The masks were interesting, one of the did some guitar bashing . No climbing up on things though like at their last BDO performance. I was happy they played power out but it sounded different with the different drums.

The Hives were unexpectedly awesome too. Such good energy and crowd interaction. They really put effort into connecting with the audience (and country specific).

Just those two performances made me a very happy customer

The layout in Western Springs was pretty good too. A lot less walking and less crowds to get through. Audience was good too, not too rough. I was second row for hives and first for AF, only got two tiny bruises. Some of the security were hard on letting bags in the D barrier though, so I didn't get in there for The Naked and Famous. But I saw other girls in there with bags so later on I just marched in and no problems.

I disappeared for a year...but here I am, saying hello. Probably for another year.

The new album has brought me out of hibernation! What do you guys think, if any of you are still around?

I have kind of mixed feelings. But I do like that it's riffier and rockier. Reapers and The Handler are excellent.

The Globalist has some good moments, but 10 minutes is way too long.

The Handler now stands alone as my favourite. Can't stop listening to it.

I just listened to it today for the first time. There were a couple of stand outs for me but some were a bit wtf!
I'm a bit gutted with pyscho. That riff is amazing but I feel the song is pretty lacking and they could have taken it so much further and made it really cool. I guess they won't play it as an outtto anymore?

It's unfortunate that this is quite a small country, there's never a whole lot of Muse fans...

There are dozens of us! :chuckle:

Every once in a while, usually in line for a gig, I'll meet someone who's also a fan. TBH if someone knows more than just Uprising/SMBH, I'm already impressed. Doesn't happen often though.

Welcome to the board! I lurk 99% of the time and it's pretty quiet here anyway since apparently NZ and the whole continent that is Australia don't count as part of the World Tour but anyway...:indiff:

Thanks!! I'm lucky enough to have some friends who like Muse, thank goodness. I still have a sliver of hope that Muse tour here one day...I'm probably just gonna lurk around too, unless I see something interesting!!

Gotta say, I can't believe you don't like MotP. That song is like peak Muse to me. What are your favourite songs then?

Agh, I dunno. It's always hard to choose my favourite Muse songs because I always change my mind. I'm liking Megalomania, Bliss, Glorious, MK Ultra and Dead Inside at the moment though!!
