I made a legendary mistake at work today. I had copied and pasted the full script for a story from the database on to our file a few minutes before having to caption a live interview.

Somehow, in the course of typing those live captions, I managed to hit both Ctrl and V at the same time - paste. So 70 captions' worth of a completely different story suddenly appeared in the middle of this live discussion about the weather.

What made this truly awesome was the first caption of the story:

"Do you wanna see some rats?!"

I'm still cracking up about it three hours later.

This weather is bloody ridiculous. I hope all you Moas are keeping warm.

I was on Tiri from Sunday til yesterday, so it wasn't ideal having a cold snap when over there but it wasn't too bad. Getting hail in the bush was pretty fun.

That story was about people who rescue abandoned pet rats. :erm: Important job, I guess, but hardly important current events.

Yeah it was good thanks. It was nice to spend some time there since I haven't been there for quite a while.

It was also good to have some time to talk to my supervisor. If she gets the funding she has applied for, she would like to employ me over the summer to monitor bellbird nests on Tiri or perhaps a joint job of monitoring bellbirds and robins at Tawharanui. So fingers crossed!

Oh ok. Yeah, that seems like more of a space filler when there is no other big news. Good story in that it might make people more aware that there are places who will take pets instead of just dumping them into the wild.

I loved all the opening day celebrations. The Viaduct looked amazing as the waka came in, the crowds along there were incredible, and I'll never forget the opening ceremony at Eden Park - I was so lucky to be there and see that. The fireworks over the harbour looked amazing as well, although I didn't see those until later. They didn't show them on the big screens at Eden Park. :indiff:

I felt pretty proud of my city yesterday.

It was the first game I have ever been to, and I was completely blown away! The opening ceremony was spine chilling, and the whole atmosphere when the game was on was incredible!
The only downside I thought was the disappointing lack of showing the fireworks on the screen, made worse by being able to just see the tips of some of them near the Sky Tower in the distance from our seats.

Other than that I loved it, I was very proud to be a Kiwi.

Well the US did better today than expected - couldn't believe how well their defence held in the first half. I had a few mates over who were curious about the World Cup and I was trying to explain why things are the way they are in rugby, not necessarily the rules, and the general consensus was "wow, I didn't know rugby was so intense. It just doesn't stop!"

I hate American football. So, so much.

_Ed_
12-09-2011, 03:58 AM
Yeah, I thought the US played superbly. It was great to see them get a try at the end there.

And I agree about American football. Don't see the appeal of it at all. They play for about 5 seconds then stand around and talk for several minutes.

It's really ironic how it's such a technical sport where not much actually happens, and yet the thickest of the thick are the ones who play it.

On a different note, a Facebook ad alerted me to the fact that I can enrol for voting since I was back down under for over a month, so now I'm all set for that!

Excellent! Although I don't have high hopes for this election. When John Key walked out to give his speech at the World Cup opening, I think I was the only one of the 60,000 who booed. :(

There was a flyer that the National guy sent out and I said to dad that the guy looked kind of dodgy... Dad said he's quite an alright guy so that's why :p the Labour reps here always have sucked. I am anti-National but when it comes to local I vote for the more deserving person :yesey: I'm anti-Labour right now too since I can't stand Phil Goff :(

Still firmly believe Helen's the best Prime Minister we've had - certainly in my lifetime.

I really hate my local MP. He's such a dick. I bet he was the one who was behaving badly at the World Cup game over the weekend - his name was mentioned as one of a possible three. He got punched in the face at a U2 gig a couple of years back. Doing Northcote proud.

Yeah I thought Slade did well but I hear he can be quite hit and miss. As terrible as the whole thing with Dan is, I had to snigger when the team doctor said she had examined the scans of his groin and apart from the tear the rest of his groin looked 'pristine'. HAHAH.

We're trying out new speech recognition software at work. I've had some really awesome and hilarious mistakes so far.

John Key - "junkie"
Metiria Turei - "material tirade"
Sir Geoffrey Palmer - "Sir Geoffrey Parma"
We'll be back in surplus within three years - "We'll be back in slippers within three years"
Hone Harawira - "Honey how we are"
Terry Serepisos - "Terry syrupy sauce" (my favourite)

Is anybody else rather irritated by this? I mean, it should just be towed right back to Liberia and sunk in the harbour of Monrovia. How is it that Liberia, one of the poorest countries in the world, can afford a container ship anyway? No matter how shitty it is. I bet the captain was pissed and coked up to his eyeballs.

Phil Goff honestly does nothing to make me like him more. Every time National introduces a policy that doesn't need much said about it, he always has something negative to say. How does that help at all?! Saying it's bad for New Zealanders with nothing to back it up other than a few general statements does not really say anything other than "I'm clinging at straws to make people dislike National".

Eugh. No wonder Labour are understandably going to get absolutely destroyed this election.

Labour really hasn't moved forward from last election where all they could do was attack National. There's just no credible alternative to Phil Goff so we just have a repeat of National fronted Bill English a la 2002.

This compulsory opt in of kiwisaver really fucks me off, waste of $550 million when National already totally fucked up kiwisaver anyway.

Where does John Key think these Mum and Dad investors are going to get the money to invest in the public assets the government sells off? Also, if the government doesn't think it's a good enough investment to keep, why should we be buying it?

Our tax system is so unbelievably flawed. So many people complaining about the tax they pay when in reality they are in fact, tax negative with working for families.

Edit - I just bought a ticket to go see Dave Dobbyn play the night of the election. I can mourn another 3 years of John Key with fellow kiwis who probably didn't even bother to vote anyway.

Roof-dismantling sounds much more interesting than studying! The noise would make it bloody hard to concentrate anyway. No work today?

It's not that weird outside of New Zealand, a lot of department stores and supermarket chains are part of the financial market. I guess in NZ it's never really been that successful and it's probably to do with size and the fact with insurance people tend to go with what they know, being who their parents were insured with etc.

Labour really learnt nothing from 2008. :noey: They're just going to alienate what voters they have left to go vote for the Greens. Basically, let's go in with no policies except "attack John Key". And I absolutely loathe John Key, but if that's the whole basis of your campaign, it's just childish and embarrassing.

Although I did like this:

Several of Goff's signs have been removed in his Mt Roskill electorate but he said that was what happened in election campaigns.

"They've been very personal, they've chosen the ones with my photo on. Somebody suggested they might be adorning somebody's lounge wall and I thought well that's ok. But more likely its the back of the toilet door."

Fuck's sake- I've been at this flat a grand total of 4 days and already there's a shit ton of drama developing. The landlord might want to build a house in our backyard, we have to organise a tenancy agreement and bond (apparently they've just been living here without one), I might have to start paying an extra $25 dollars a week for water, and I just found out that the cat we have is actually being housed against the landlord's rules and he doesn't even know that its here, and he's very strict on a no-pets rule. Oh and we'll have to pay a bond too- so that's like $200 or something I'll have to take from my already dwindling savings account. It hasn't even been a freaking week ffs!

I hope you're able to see it somehow!

The debate went pretty well at work tonight. From what I saw, Goff performed better. Key was flustered and kept saying "you had nine years - why didn't you do it then?", which is less valid now than it was in 2008.

Oh, and Jon Johansson slammed Key when he said supplementary member had the same proportional representation as MMP. "That is flat out untrue!" :awesome:

That being said, I went to the Labour party caucus thing the other year and Jim Anderton chided them for their whole anti-National, as opposed to pro-Labour, stance.

Does anyone else have issues with the referendum though? Like, the way it's advertised, it sounds like even if you want to keep MMP you're forced to vote for an alternative. I tried to find out more about that online, but all that happened is I learnt a bunch about said alternatives. Nor can I navigate the igovt site. Maybe this is just due to my untechyness though.

That just seems to be what politics is these days though in NZ. Someone proposes a new law and you've instantly got someone on an opposing party slagging off the idea. And yeah, I know the media aren't exactly the greatest source to trust in terms of getting the whole story, but they're all I've got! :chuckle:

Yeah very much so. Government is so tiring, especially watching the US government. Its like as soon as any bill is proposed the other party jumps onto it like a ravenous tiger. I really like Pita Sharples. He was in the Auckland Uni debating club public debate thing ("One Law For All: Race Relations in New Zealand", along with Shane Jones and one of the law school lecturers), and he was pretty good.

Oh, I have a situation I wanted some advice on - I want to take two papers over summer school, because one of them is only being offered over summer school and it sounds epic, and the other one I couldn't fit in this year.

Now, the one I couldn't fit in - paper A - I need as a prerequisite to a first semester paper next year. Paper B would go towards my major, but isn't in itself essential.

There are like, 8 hours or whatever a week for Paper A, but one of those hours clashes with paper B.

Should I take paper B, despite the clash? I'm proficient with paper A stuff enough that it shouldn't matter, but then, two papers over summer school seems to be regarded as a demanding kind of undertaking when I've talked to people about it. But paper B sounds amazing.

My flatmate christmas-upped the flat. It's so over the top...I love it. We were discussing getting a real tree. Think I've done most of my xmas shopping, gonna have to face the post office queue again tomorrow.

Really happy that Sepuloni made it back into Parliament, and that Mathers made it in for the Greens - she's NZ's first-ever deaf MP. It'll be interesting to see what they put in place to allow her to be involved in debates.

darkshineskitty
13-12-2011, 10:11 AM
Heard a Labour lady on the radio today being all 'David is good' and 'David will step up the role'... I was like they're both David! Must have been a confusing week. 'Who are you voting for?' 'David.' "Ah really? I'm voting for David.' 'Yeah that's what I said!'

JoBear
13-12-2011, 11:13 AM
Be interesting to see how Labour goes on from here. Certainly better than Cunliffe either way. I just hope it wasn't too premature move. Goff should have done another year with Shearer as deputy or something.

Flatmates have the habit of writing group emails. Dickhead flatmate is saying he can't pay his rent and council will and the two were like "if you don't pay it you can move out in four weeks" but we all just signed a joint lease for six months so they can't even threaten that. Drama. I miss my old flat. :(

Its just unneccessary really. If he can't pay the rent his super loaded parents will (Eton kid afterall). He just being a dick and the other two are stressing over it. I think he avoided coming home last night after all the "we need to talk" emails. I'm just glad he took the furry sausages out of the fridge finally.

Looking forward to my Dubai trip so much now. Sun and good company. I so rarely see anyone but Oren occassionally these days.

_Ed_

Ew, furry.

Exciting about Dubai! Hope you have an awesome time.

I got majorly undercharged for some stamps today - she sold them to me at 60c each, and they turned out to be $2.40 each! I went back and tried to pay a bit more, but the lady in the shop didn't speak very good English, so it wasn't easy to explain. Ended up just giving three quarters of the stamps back.

JoBear

There's no reason for me to be up this late but I just heard annoying flatmate come home and he's just sent two emails, one to all of us and one to the agent about how he can't pay the rent on time and two how he's going to move out of the flat on the 18 January. I wonder if he'll avoid us for the next month then like he has for the last few days?

Least I won't be the new girl in the flat anymore...although I think they have a friend they want to move in. So I'll still be the one they don't know.

Goodshirt were so brilliant tonight at their reunion gig.

Rodney: "Here are three new songs. There are heaps of them, but these were the easiest to learn for tonight." And the new ones were awesome - really catchy.

Other memorable quotes:
* "This is quite fun!"
* "We brought towels, in case it gets too much for us."

Setlist, as I remember it, for any GS fans:

Blowing Dirt
Slippy
Dumb Day
Cement
Buck It Up
Not That Far
How Will I See You?
New Song 1
New Song 2
New Song 3
Sophie
Place To Be
My Racing Head
Monotone
Mousey

Fiji Baby
Lucy
Green

A bit disappointed they didn't play Sand, but apart from that it was perfect. :awesome:

* I got rained on when I went for a walk on my break.

And what I really love about that story is he ordered a Baconator without the bacon. Who does that? The Baconator's all about the fucking bacon. That's like going to a pizza place and saying, "Hey, could I have a Meat Lovers, but without the meat?"

No wonder they got the order wrong.

Yeah, it is sad. I'll miss it. :( But the organisers have brought about their own downfall, really. Of course there'd be lower ticket sales when they significantly raise the price and decrease the number of acts performing.

Still, looking forward to going this Friday - hopefully some more good memories of a great festival.

I'm not a huge fan of Apple, and have managed so far without Itunes, I usually use Digirama but I just wondered that if they didn't have something if there was an alternative or if you would be then forced to use Itunes anyway.

_Ed_
29-01-2012, 10:17 PM
Yep, that's still my job, and I really love it. We have to do some abysmal programmes from time to time, but there are some good ones as well. And even the bad ones can be fun - complaining about them and ridiculing them with workmates. And the news and all its pressure is really exciting.

The workmates are awesome (if I may say so myself). We do heaps of social events, and we just have a lot of fun at work (there's a baking roster!) And the team leader for new recruits is fabulous and so amazing at training newbies.

But we're advertising for a full-timer, yeah? That has its drawbacks - mainly the changing shifts. I don't like the 7am-3:30 one! Plus the new recruit will be replacing a hugely popular captioner. Big shoes to fill!

But, yeah, I think it's a really awesome job. I'd definitely recommend applying if you're considering it. :)

And you don't get dumped straight into live captioning on your very first day. You only start doing the news when you're ready - usually about 6-8 weeks, I think.

It's a job that provides hours of nerdy fun. Last week we had a big discussion about how to describe the sound of jelly wobbling. It was fascinating! We went with "gloop!" in the end.

Oh, is that someone you know? I can't really think of what to say. Can't imagine what you're going through.

I definitely will spread the word, and my thoughts are with you and all those close to him.

I went to primary, intermediate, and high school with him. He really liked cricket (edit: at primary school I mean). I hope they find him :(

Hey guys. Long time no see, time has been passing by so fast for me. I finally finished my thesis on Friday! :D I still don't feel very relaxed from it yet though, waiting for the weather to clear up for a little holiday. Hope everyone had a good holiday season.

I love social media during election campaigning:

I notice that the media really doesn't give a shit about the referendum.

 plus to all the other pics posted as well.

Apparently a woman fell four storeys down the Aotea Square side of the Skycity Metro building (or whatever it's called this week) today. :stunned:

Serious but stable condition in hospital, so you'd have to say she's pretty lucky!

One of my uncles was on his lunch break and was watching that. He turned around to leave and then he heard THUD!! That was her falling to the ground :stunned: At first people were stunned because they weren't sure if that was part of the stunt but then he saw her hand move and blood which is when people realised it was a fall and called the ambulance. My uncle couldn't believe she only broke her cheek bones with the sound of her landing.

Oh my god. Our house set on fire last night. Something wrong with a wire in the kitchen under the floor. We were in it when it started, got out ok, three fire engines were here for about five hours putting it out and checking everything. I don't know what I'm doing posting.

Oh, sorry to hear about that, glad your're all ok.

Sorry to hear about that too. Hope they find him soon! :(
