Interesting question, that.

Astle
McCullum
Fleming
Taylor
Styris
Cairns
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Bond
Tuffey (circa 2003...he's a bit poo at the moment)

I had to go to one of the meeting rooms this afternoon to "discuss my application" for the promotion. I won't lie to you, I was bloody terrified. I'd heard about all these gruelling tests people applying for similar positions in the past have been forced to go through.

But it was just to tell me that I'd got the job!

_Ed_

I'm now an editor. I used to be a producer, which meant I typed up captions from scratch for TV programmes, as well as doing the news; now my job is to edit the captions others have done, as well as still doing the news. And I'm meant to be the guy to answer people's questions and solve problems in the weeknight/weekend shifts now. It's just a bit more seniority, really.

Spy Fox

 Is there less work involved in the editing? Or is it more work because you have to watch it more closely?

_Ed_

It probably works out about the same. You have to write a detailed report thing for producers explaining the changes you make to their work, etc.

Congratulations!

It sounds very flash :yesey:

Last invoice for the year goes in tomorrow at noon. I have to wake up at 5 and start work at 6. Not fun, but it's Christmas. I need the cash.

Especially because my bangle snapped the other day, and I had to take it into the jewellers to be repaired. They were impressed though. Apparently it's very old and baltic. Given the Russian/Hungarian side of the family, this makes sense and is nice because I'd kind of been worried they were going to look at it and be all 'Lolplastic' or something

What would be your ideal ODI team of players from the last decade?

1. Lou Vincent
2. Nathan Astle
3. Stephen Fleming
4. Ross Taylor
5. Craig McMillan (or Scott Styris)
6. Chris Cairns
7. Brendon McCullum
8. Daniel Vettori
9. Chris Harris
10. Kyle Mills
11. Shane Bond
Vincent, Mills and McCullum? :noey:

Twose and Astle would be in mine. Geoff Allott...but I guess that's circa 1999.

_Ed_

Mills has actually become one of our best ever ODI bowlers, believe it or not! 181 wickets at an average of 26.46.

Who was the cricketer who moved to the UK to be with his partner and recently was talking about coming back as he can't play in the UK as he's still considered an international player? Can't think of his name.

And I always ranked Vincent as a good opener, and McCullum was much better when he batted down the order.

I do know of Twose, but I think Allott is a bit before I started watching the Black Caps

I just don't get why they play McCullum when he's not keeping. I think it's a wasted space. Not that we've had all that great keepers in the last decade...Chris Nevin anybody?

At least McCullum still keeps in ODIs. And I guess he deserves to stay in Tests after scoring that 220 in India. Hopkins is dire, though.

And I saw the next guy in line, Van Wyk, in a televised game for the first time last week. He was AWFUL. Dropped a catch and let through heaps of byes. Ominous.

I'll never forget my twin brother going to Roger Twose "When you going to go back to England?" in such a way it sounded like he was telling him to go home. This must have been..err, 2000? At a game in Carisbrook. I was so embarrassed.

That might be because he's had more bigger scores, due to more time to bat, but he's had a lot of low scores. I think he was more consistent down the order, and he was often one to get us home.

We do lack a proper opener other than Guptill in ODIs though.

Probably true.

Yeah, that's the thing. I'd much rather have McCullum opening than someone like How, Ingram, Cumming, Redmond, Papps or *shudder* either Marshall.

And it looks like Franklin could develop into a bit of a finisher in the middle to lower order, which would be fantastic. As long as we don't rely on him too much as a bowler.

Spy Fox

It's a shame that none of those batters ever transitioned into the international game. They're all so good in the domestic matches.

_Ed_
16-12-2010, 12:41 PM
True, but in most cases it wasn't just bad luck or a mental thing - they had real deep-rooted technical flaws that were repeatedly exposed by world class pace bowling. Not what you want in an opener. It is a shame, though.

Had to get a bangle repaired in town. The jewellers got all excited and Antiques Roadshow-y over it, because it's liek, fancy and old school and Russian and stuff (apparently. I had no idea. All I could say was like 'Uh, yeah, I guess that would make sense. We've got Russian and Hungarian heritage... Idk what it's made of, my aunty gave it to me...' and so on)

What do people think about the sudden appointment of John Wright as coach? I think he's the right guy for the job, but the timing was completely wrong - I don't think he can make any difference in time for the World Cup, and then he'll probably get the blame for our failure and get dumped. It's not upsetting when she gets angry, just rather time-consuming (I'm too pedantic not to answer back, and she always wants the last word. We get trapped). It's all good now though. She cooled off and apologised for being out of line and stuff.

Oh that's good you sorted it out. I will wait til the holiday season has settled down to go on holiday since it will be hard to find cheap accommodation and stuff, so just going to try plan little things like going to hot pools or something in the weekend.

I keep meaning to take ours down but I know I will get green bits everywhere and have to vacuum again.

Yeah there is a strong relationship between Xmas trees and vacuuming. We didn't even bother this year putting up our tiny one that can sit on the fire place.

I think I need to go for an eye test. My eyes have not been feeling right lately. Started using eye drops which removes some of the discomfort but my vision still doesn't feel perfect. How does that stress-based breathing disorder work? I've found my asthma often comes on when stressed or other emotions like panic. Last couple weeks of 2010 my chest wasn't feeling to good.

2010 has been a very mixed year for me with some most fantastic times and others very stressful/sad. Still kind of in that stressed/sad part but hopefully I'll get over it soon and distract myself with work and more fun times ahead to make 2011 a good year.

I've apparently started taking breaths that are too sharp and sudden. As a result, my diaphragm doesn't contract and create enough room for my lungs to fully inflate. Or something like that. So I'm not getting enough air in.

Ah, you'll do fine!

I know I'm one of those people that freak out about marks, thinking I won't do that well and all... But this time, I actually have a serious concern. I need 31 more credits to get into my course, and in the exams, I did enough papers to get me about 40 credits...

I'm not confident on any of my chemistry papers because of how they mark it (i.e. you need to answer every question to pass, and I only answered parts), and that's 15 credits down the drain :erm:

Aw, the Hoff seems nice. Sure he's a bit B grade, but he puts on a smile and gives it a go, and he doesn't seem particularly vain or anything. Apparently he was bantering with the crowd and such. He seems like a nice guy.
Have you seen his hamburger video his daughter filmed? It's quite sad really.

I don't think you have to answer every question for Chem. 3/4 usually for an Achieved, and only the first part of the question.

Nah, the new system is that you get one whole mark for a question (they changed it...again). You need basically all the criteria to get said mark for a question.

My only hope is that they've done the whole 'xx OR yy OR zz' thing.

It's actually getting quite ridiculous. I haven't passed with my internals, but I'm confident that I will get it. Probably won't get an Excellence endorsement, but it doesn't matter for Level 3 so much.

Didn't mean it like that.

He went off stage straight after, he was trying to play, bleeding all over the place and then goes "Sorry, I can't...my mouth's fucked." There's an awful quality video somewhere of it.

She even used crosshairs to illustrate which Democrats she wanted to get rid of.

To be honest I can't even remember. That's how much it will mean to you in your later years.

I do remember my twin brother being livid when we got the paper results and it showed I failed the Statistics exam even worse than he did but was scaled up higher than he was based on the internals.

ha that classic gif.

i think i actually technically failed 3 subjects - i know i definitely failed classics (worse subject ever) and statistics. but i guess lots of other people failed even worse and helped with the scaling.

six form chemistry - failed everything but the final mark. :yesey: i never really understood that year, everything is internal and basically whatever mark you get is based on how good your school is?

Ah, fair enough. I don't plan to ever remember these ones, I don't want to!

I've never particularly done well in the proper exams anyway. My teachers understand my blabbing, exam markers never seem to because they're not meant to pick out answers like teachers do at school. It sucks :(

I got 42 Excellence credits out of 50 for the endorsement  But my piano exam, that I got an A for, and is now supposedly worth Level 3 credits at the grade I was doing wasn't on the results, so maybe that'll push me to over 50.

Not that it really matters apart from getting UE.
