Does anyone consider this Robin Bain thing a bit much? I mean, do they really need to do this?
Yeah, it is overkill, and it's hardly going to have any effect.
But I guess the Bain defence was based heavily on tarnishing the reputation of someone who's dead and so couldn't defend himself, so maybe it's fair to have someone stick up for him. But people have probably already made up their own minds about it.
The bit about the photocopier guy's testimony could be pretty big. Don't know who to believe of course, but there were a few people who had a very different version of events and even denied that the guy was ever there. If that testimony was fabricated, that's a huge deal. Probably can't prove it though.

Yeah, it does seem like something may have happened there. I just don't see what people would get out of it. The verdict was probably quite highly biased because of the publicity of the trial to start with.

Haha, they're obviously so in touch with the youth of today. We all love big Dave.
I wonder what they play on hold lines in North Korea. Perhaps Justin Bieber now, after the hilarious poll result?

I bought a kobo recently. I am finding it difficult to make it do what i want to do after my younger brother screwed around with it. Curs'ed sibling!

I wasn't expecting to cry for several reasons: I am male, my favourite Pixar film as a kid was always A Bug's Life, and Tim Allen tends to annoy me in his roles. I tried hard not to cry, and I failed miserably. :'( Those last twenty minutes proved that whoever writes the screenplays for these Pixar films is a pro at heartstring-tugging.
That being said, it wasn't perfect, but I say that as a notorious nitpicker of movies in general, because it did everything so well, even by Pixar standards, despite a few somewhat contrived or underdeveloped story elements. I reckon it has become my favourite Pixar film now, passing A Bug's Life several times over.
IMDB is certainly off by a bit, but it is still by far the best of the Toy Story series and up there with the best of the Pixar productions.

Wow, that would be an awesome day! Over in Europe they are even just lucky getting awesome support bands. Just imagine how crazily fun and exhausted we'd be from a gig with White Lies and Muse!
I've noticed that a lot of bands are all coming here the end of July and beginning of August. I'm still undecided whether to go the Florence + the Machine and The Temper Trap. How did I miss in the budget that National are limiting student loans?!
Makes sense. Wouldn't want to encourage students to attain high levels of qualification, or anything. That's just daft.
You know what else is daft? The little notification that pops up on the computers at work when you plug in your headphones - "you just plugged a device into the audio jack!"
Why is it necessary to be notified? In what situation could someone do this without being aware that they have done so?

And Angus, voting anyone but National or Act is the way to go. Most places the electorate vote doesn't matter because there's people who are going to either die in that seat or crash into a tree drunk, cry on the front page of the paper and be shamed out of the seat.

How did I miss in the budget that National are limiting student loans?!
Universities are all capping their numbers now, they don't need to give out as many loans, so why on earth would they limit student loans?! There is no logic in that. If there are less people going to uni, there are going to be less loans, duh...
And new permanent residents will have to have lived here for 2 years before being able to take out a loan? Fuck off National.
Only positive I can see in that is that it might stop all the international students that abuse our system because we have relatively cheap university compared to other countries, but other than that, that's downright unfair for most people who move here from overseas to start a new life or whatever...

I just had a comical misunderstanding. Apply for both.
I've been to both, Otago has better facilities like libraries, but Victoria was great for having the School of Government. Guess it depends what you're doing.
Went to the King's Arms tonight to see five bands for $10.
The first band, Litvak Attack, was absolutely fantastic. Worth the $10 alone. Those are some very talented musicians who I doubt will be the opening act on a bill like that for much longer.
So when they finished, I thought that since they were only first up, I would be in for a stunning night. It was not to be - the rest of the bands were AWFUL! At least Snakes Of Iron were entertainingly bad - my friend and I were pissing ourselves laughing through most of their set. But the others were just painful. On top of being musically poor, The Rabble were unbearably preachy.

I've gotten something like that too!
Last week on Tiri it felt like my asthma was coming back and it got more persitant when I came home. So I saw a dr yesterday and he said it must be an infection triggering it as my temperature was 38.6!! I have no other symptoms and he said I didn't have a chest infection, so it is still asthma but potentially could be influenza... So I'm not allowed to go to uni or anywhere until it it has cleared up in hopefully a few days. If not, I have to go see the dr again.
I'm not sure if you have a history of asthma Rich, but if it starts getting too uncomfortable and makes you cough, you might want to go to the dr to get checked out.

I'm just on and off Tiri still, haven't been to Motuihe as much but there are about 20 bellbirds still there which isn't too bad. And while at home, I have to sort out my data. Today I watched some more of my camera footage and I got 334 male bellbirds coming into a feeder in just one hour. They are hungry little sauages :chuckle:
Wow! Action-packed footage. That's amazing for such a short period of time.
Michelle
20-07-2010, 05:45 AM
Indeed. But not so much action when a tui is around. They can't get into the feeder but they sure like to find a way. One tui spent maybe 20 minutes coming back and forth, climbing all around the feeder (even under it!) and just stood outside the entrance as if thinking of what to try next.
Had that operation today. I had a local anaesthetic, but it wasn't fun being entirely conscious of what was going on the whole time. I'll spare you the gruesome details.
One side of my face is drooping a bit because of the anaesthetic. I feel like Rob Muldoon.

So, I could go to Vic and do Psychology, or Otago and do Neuroscience. Both of which I'm really interested in.
Wellington is closer to home, if I want to visit. Most of my friends are going there. I like Wellington better as a city too. I also think the accomodation is better (maybe just because I want to get into Weir House, cause they have a darkroom :p) It also gives me better opportunities to do something else, like Film, which I know isn't a strong point at Otago, and something I'm really interested in.
I like the idea of Neuroscience better though. It uses more of what I've learnt at school. As far as I know it's the best for research, which is what I want to get into after Uni. It's a lot further away, and I'll know less people, though. There's also not much room for other papers (minors, etc) and even less if I do Honours.
I can't decide which is better for me. :erm:
Hmm, sounds like a tough decision.
I don't think not knowing people is a strong reason not to go to Otago, though. From what I've heard, it's an extremely social student population and it's very easy to make friends - more so than in the bigger cities, where the student population is more spread out.

From what I know between the two subjects, neuroscience will probably be like my physiology classes with lots of physiology to learn and lab work... My friend did psychology (as well as physiology) but there was no lab work or anything like that, just assignments and some surveys on people. Not sure what it would be like at different universities though... So I guess just look around some more at the two subjects and think of what you might like the best and what kind of research/jobs you'd like to do after uni. Neuroscience > Psychology
But Wellington > Dunedin
But I haven't been to Dunedin, so I guess that's a bit biased. I keep swapping back and forth between where I want to go, daily. I was set on Victoria this morning, now I'm set on Otago.
How about a weekend trip to Dunedin to have a look? I know, I know, not always feasable. I had never been to Palmy, but it ended up all good. The only thing one of my friends complained about in Otago was the cold, but they have good heating, lol.

Hmm, sounds like a tough decision.
I don't think not knowing people is a strong reason not to go to Otago, though. From what I've heard, it's an extremely social student population and it's very easy to make friends - more so than in the bigger cities, where the student population is more spread out.
You're exactly right Richard. Most people at Otago are from all over New Zealand. Whereis I know a lot of other universities it was a bit of a different feel as lot more people live at home and go to university. I lived in a hall in Dunedin which was 90% North Islanders (mostly Aucklanders at that) and no one knew anyone, so we were all in the same boat and I still keep in touch with a few people from then despite living on the other side of the world. Dunedin really has a community, something I never really felt at Vic, because there's the whole of North Dunedin which is basically studentville. You walk down the street and get invited into a keg party sort of thing. Depends what you're looking for really.
Then again, would have thought the choice between neuroscience and psychology is very different!

I don't think I'd have the opportunity really. Not until the end of exams late in November :erm: I think I can rely on the fact that it is really a student city. I'm quite intent on going to Otago right now, but that might change in the next few days :chuckle:

I think it's generally stacking up to be Otago, from talks I've had with people. The course is more specialised (and I have the option of taking Psychology papers towards the Neuroscience course as well, because there are no Neuroscience papers untill 400 level and you do Anatomy, Physiology and things before then.) I'm not worried about being far from home right now, but as my parents said, it'll be a bit expensive if I do want to come home for the weekend.
Affordability is not a good consideration in the purchasing of beer. We tried an unpleasantly cheap imported beer called Zipfer this evenign. It was dewcidedly unwise. But hilarity ensued. My friend suggested it may have been poured through an old sock.

I had a friend from Napier at Uni who went home quite regularly and it's certainly a lot cheaper these days with grabaseat/more airline competition than it was then....other than the airport being in the middle of nowhere.

 Hopefully he'll stop complaining that he's targeted for being gay. His sexuality has nothing to do with the criticism he's faced in the last year or so (and it's ridiculous for him to compare it to some of the horrible prejudice others have faced) - he's targeted for being a disaster and a liability. I'm really disappointed in him.

About two weeks for me to decide that I like Victoria University again
Haha. Keep us posted.
The Temper Trap were amazing tonight. Way too short, though - about 1 hr 10 mins, including a 5-minute encore break. Would have liked a bit more, even if they had to resort to a couple of covers or something.
The Naked and Famous were awesome too, but again crazily short - about 25 mins. They also weren't very interactive with the crowd - "we're The Naked and Famous" and "thanks" were all they said, and they didn't even say goodbye after their last song. They just stopped playing, waved and fucked off. :erm:
The crowd were cool until The Temper Trap started - there were mass singalongs with the songs that were playing while we waited. Weather With You was the highlight.
But then when the band came on, a group of six or seven really annoying drunk girls barged their way to the front and stopped just in front of me. For the duration of the set, they fell over on each other and bystanders (standing on all of our feet repeatedly), and they took photos of each other non-stop throughout the concert. Can still see the fucking flashes when I close my eyes. And they kept hugging each other, whacking me in the face in their uncoordinated flaily attempts to reach their arms around each other.
But at least I was able to share my disdain for these vile creatures with some of the others who were suffering the same ordeal.

Ooh. Might have to investigate.
I've also been listening to Ash a lot lately. Crushed that they're doing a little tour of Australia at the moment and didn't add any NZ show. :( Loved them since about 2003, and I think they last played here in 2002. Typical.

Its called Broken Bride. Quite a mix of songs, its probably not everyone's cup of tea, but by the last song I was practically tearing up.
Get on their forum and yell at them
I'll definitely look into that!
Forum hassling is worth a try, I suppose. I saw someone in the Marina and the Diamonds thread on this board said she sent a message to Marina and she replied. :stunned: Might be worth me suggesting a NZ tour is in order for her as well.
How are you, anyway?

Yeah if they hear there's a market here for them, then they might be more inclined to visit.
I'm okay, what about you?
Yeah, not bad, thanks. Found out I got a B for my dissertation. Pretty happy with that, considering I had to get it done in one semester instead of the usual two.
Trying to organise a pub quiz outing for my department at work next week. It's hard to find a day that works for everyone!

I missed them by a DAY at Benicássim while I was on holiday in Spain. They've got some of the best setlists too, great balance of old and new. :(

Liking Arcade Fire's new album so far. Think it'll take a few more listens, though. It's quite long! There's a lot to take in.
Good to hear! I've heard a couple songs which I liked, so looking forwad to listen to the whole album.

Thanks! Yay for internet!
And congrats Richard! :D Totally forgot I had missed multi-quoting that in previous posts.
I just had my first day of an outdoor first aid course. It was quite good, the guy teaching it was pretty relaxed which made things easier. He showed us this clip from The Office (American version) of their fire evacuation plan in practice, it was pretty funny

I created a monster!
Anyway, Minuit were awesome tonight. And it was great seeing them in such a tiny venue. But it had its downsides - it was an awful place. My friend Scarlett came back from the bathroom with news that she saw a guy and a girl go into a cubicle together. A discussion ensued about how vile that was and why anyone would do that in a bar (especially one with pretty nasty bathrooms).
But then, half an hour or so later, when I myself went to the bathroom, I saw the same sight - and this time, the guy and girl went into a cubicle that didn't even have a lock. :stunned:

Good to here Minuit were awesome. Wish I could have gone as I listened to one of their albums yesterday and really liked it! Ah well, another time.
This rainy weekend has been great for catching up on listening to all the new music I've gotten lately.
Yeah you should definitely try to see Minuit. They put on an awesome show with lasers, smoke machines, strobe lights, etc...sounds a bit like our karaoke room on Friday!
Rainy days are good for music listening. Unfortunately I'm at work, typing the captions for a two-hour episode of The Bachelor. :indiff: These women are ghastly human beings. And the bachelor dude is a twat.

Hope it doesn't come to anything and you feel better!
It's random how that sometimes happens. You're so sure you're getting a cold, but then it's like the cold decides, "Nah, actually, I can't be fucked" and pisses off without causing days of misery.

My granddad was born in 1911. He had one of those old school enormous box-on-legs upholstered radio sets in the corner of his lounge and I remember going down there in about 2005 (we lived in this massive house altogether til I was 16) and asking if he ever listened to it, to which he replied:
'No, that's my old radio.
So, pushing my luck, I said, 'Really?' because I was impressed by the distinction. And he nodded. Then pointed at the tv.
'That's my radio.'
I have to go and do my laundry at the laundromat, because we don't have a washing machine and I don't have any towels left. Then I need to go and buy more sheets. Then I need to think about getting a cheap bookshelf from like the warehouse. It's 4pm though, and I think I might just stay in bed all day and do all of that tomorrow.

Almost had to stay late at work this evening because I somehow became distracted by daft, obscure conspiracy theories.
Well, that and the fact that the Jonas Brothers represent all that's wrong with the world and I needed at least a five-minute break for every minute of the show I completed.
But yes, mostly the theories. The Paul McCartney is dead one is my favourite. :chuckle:

The new kid character on the show is called Phoenix. PHOENIX. Every time they mention his name I repeat it in incredulity. Its not a bad name, but so soap opera. Plus he's a Warner, and they're rich. He's destined to be a wealthy playboy.
Ah yes, Phoenix. He doesn't wear shoes, apparently. Little tidbit of information there.
Judging from an episode I did a couple of weeks back, his sibling rivalry with that little twat Harry is something special.
