Helloooo there Scotty
what do they sound like then? for those who have no idea who they are

Hmm.. well.. my descriptions are always horrible but I'll try...
The tracks I've heard so far sound a bit like Radiohead's more prog-like stuff, combined with a bit of Tool.. But I haven't really heard much.. the tracks I've heard are Trains, Strip The Soul, Buying New Soul, Stars Die, Don't Hate Me, and Dislocated Day..
Told ya my descriptions sucked..
You can find out better here (http://www.porcupinetree.com/)

I'm seriously considering buying all their CDs now, after hearing only a handful of songs..
I have one album somewhere and some mp3s, they sound very sorta chilled if I remember, quite nice

I heard 2 of their cds (not sure how many they have), but I liked all the songs! Let me know if you bought some cds, I'm very curious if they're all that good.

PT are AMAZING. Anyone who is a fan of Muse's more atmospheric stuff, or even their rockin stuff, should fall in love with Porcupine Tree.
Here's a link to an MP3, if anyone is interested... Sound of Muzak (http://www2.progarchives.com/mp3/Porcupine%20Tree%20-%20In%20Absentia%20-%2004%20-%20The%20Sound%20Of%20Muzak.mp3)

Ok, I have a few PT albums now.
On The Sunday of Life...

In Absentia
And I have a whole bunch of tracks off their other albums.
Basically, I have totally fallen in love with this band. Everything I have heard by them is totally awesome.
New album next month!! I can't wait, I'm really looking forward to it!

Yes. Deadwing should be great. If you want a track off of it, PM me. I've got one of the singles, Shallow. It is ROCKIN.
Also, if you like PT, you should check out another PT, Pineapple Thief. They are also incredible, with similar stylings to Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, and the like. Just with very few heavy parts, if any.
That Sound of Musak track sounds a bit like Anathema

Had to come on here just to post about the new album, Deadwing.
AMAZING album. Album of the year so far. Can't imagine anything coming out will be better than it either. I had HUGE expectations for this album, and it has exceeded them. This album is better than In Absentia, and I didn't think they could do an album better than that.
Going to see them on Friday, Wooooo! ^_^

Too right it's amazing! I bought it yesterday and I have to say it's fantastic! Glass Arm Shattering is my favourite track on the album, but all the others are equally as good.
It's definately up there with The Sky Move Sideways (this and Deadwing are my favourite Porcupine Tree albums).

Porcupine Tree are fast becoming one of my top bands. Some of their stuff is just beautiful and perfectly mixed with aggression.
Blackest Eyes, Wedding Nails, The Sounds Of Muzak, Gravity Eyelids, Piano Lessons, Hert Attack In A Layby, Mellotron Scratch, Strip The Soul and Pure Narcotic, I could go on.
In Absentia really is a fantastic album, go get it if you haven't got it.

Huge fan of PT, and all of Steven Wilson's stuff (favourite is actually Bass Communion, but I don't think they'd be many fans of that here!)
Stupid Dream reissue is out soon, really looking forward to that, probably their best album (definitely the one to start with), and the live DVD should be on it;s way soon - considering how good they are live, should be a bit special!

Bumping again because this band are so damn good but so annoyingly unknown.
To my ear, they're like a potion made from bits of bands like Dream Theater, Pink Floyd and Tool and their music can definitely be seen in newer bands like Amplifier, Coldplay, Muse and Radiohead.
Stupid Dream and In Absentia are two outstandingly good albums, some songs to checkout (not necessarily from those albums):
- Blackest Eyes
- Even Less
- Four Chords That Made A Million
- Gravity Eyelids
- Heart Attack In A Layby
- Prodigal
- The Sound Of Muzak
- Tinto Brass
- Trains
Go forth people and listen, they are just a great band

If you like PT you might want to check out Steven Wilson's project Blackfield. His project No-man is also excellent, but very slow and different than PT. OSI is another great Burning Shed label band.
Apparently Steven Wilson, the lead singer of Opeth and Michael Portnoy are making an album... that should be and amazing collaboration.

The Tree is the air that I breathe. I saw them 2 times last year and i have tix to see them again in October. Personally my favorite tracks are Trains [In absentia] & Buying New Soul (this one's a b-side off the album Recordings, this album you cant find in stores so its download only really).
During the months I spent first getting into In Absentia, my life drastically changed. This is my one of my favorite albums ever. It's the perfect blend of artsy and metal.
They are starting a tour soon to promote their new live DVD "Arriving Somewhere" and i really recommend it, especially to Muse fans, cause i know muse fans know how to appreciate music

- Gravity Eyelids
- Halo
- Heart Attack In A Layby
- Open Car
- Piano Lessons
- Sever
- She's Moved On
- Stranger By The Minute
- The Sound Of Muzak
- Tinto Brass
- Trains
If you're new to PT, get some of those.

And what an amazing gig it was too. I've never seen a band on such good form.
They played two sets, the first of completely new material (which is sounding epic). Then a set of older stuff:
Open Car
The Sound Of Muzak
Buying New Soul
Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here
.3
The Start Of Something Beautiful
Trains
----------
Halo
Blackest Eyes
We met Steve Wilson too who seemed like a great shap, no ego or anything, just a nice guy who appreciates his fan. Got signed tickets too!

Oh and also, Ed gave me the eyebrows during the gig, I'm sure. We had eye contact for about 2 seconds and then he raised his eyebrows lol. I think it's cos i was surrounded by short people and I looked like I knew stuff.

There was only three copies in the whole of Taunton.

really? it was all over the place in my area... checked in five CD shops and they all had plenty. out of the limited edition though.
was actually really impressed, walked into HMV and i heard My Ashes being played over the PA... knew i'd come to the right place haha.
i was a little bit disappointed with Anesthetize initally to be honest, i kinda thought "is that it? the 18 minute beast is just that?" the last section of it could be a six minute song in its own right really. that said i do love it, and its growing on me each time i listen, so who knows.
that said its still a fantastic album. reminds me of signify in places, though its definitely the logical progression from Deadwing. i think Sentimental is the best song on the album though by far. blown away by it. "stoned in the mall the kids play, and in this way they wish away each day." powerful stuff. :D

I actually think Sentimental is the worst song on the album, the middle of the song is an absolute blatent rip-off of Trains  .
Album as a whole is good, but it's not worthy of the same wow that I got from Stupid Dream, In Absentia and Deadwing.
Sleep Together is so groovy, and it reminds me an awful lot of The Beatles.

to be honest, its not convinced me of its greatness entirely yet either, but i mean Deadwing took a year and a half to grow on me fully, so this one's off to a damned good start as far as i'm concerned.
i hear the Trains reprise in Sentimental loud and clear, but i think due to the context its got a massively different vibe to it... i'm not even certain it's intentional, to be honest. i'd say My Ashes reminds me of Buying New Soul more than Sentimental does of Trains, im always expecting the BNS chorus to come up in the middle of it. :P similar vibe i think.
and yes, Sleep Together is a fantastic song. i love it, that ending is the perfect way to finish off the album. probably my favourite PT closer.

First thing I thought when I heard My Ashes was No Quarter by Led Zeppelin.
Still yes, it needs time to sink in, I'll love it more when I hear it all live again next tuesday  .

I'm sorta glad that exams have distracted me from listening to the whole album thus far. Want to give it a really good listen (and another, and another) once I finally get it. :D

yeah, you guessed it, i wanted to catch them but i can't go. :( seriously though tell us all about it, i want to hear how the setlists are changing this tour, apparently SW's bringing back some surprises. :D
if they play synesthesia though i will actually send you my own crap, in the mail. thats how jealous i'll be.

Trust me, if they play Synesthesia, I'll shit myself at the gig with joy  .
That's my fave PT song pre-Stupid Dream  .
I think my big guff with FoaBP is that after hearing all the stuff live last year, I had enormous hopes and expectations for this album but it just hasn't quite lived up to what they promised back in September 06.

EDIT: I wondered why the new vid for FOABP wasn't on their myspace last night. It didn't twig about the shooting in america. I didn't get to see it before it was taken off, but apparently the closing scene had a boy with gun in hand approaching a school :stunned:

This album is a stunner. Definitely up there with Deadwing, In Absentia and The Sky Moves Sideways as my favourite PT albums.
I especially love the opening track (Fear of a Blank Planet) and Way Out of Here. But more importantly, I'M SEEING THEM IN 3 HOURS WOOOOOOO!!!! :D

But yeah, new album is brilliant, I'm loving the title track off Deadwing at the moment, awesome stuff .

If you want to try and get into their older stuff, I seriously suggest you get the compilation 'Stars Die: The Delerium Years' - it covers all of their music pre-1999 where they effectively changed direction entirely, threw away the spaciness and started writing chilled pop/spacey rock.
Some of their older material is hit and miss and can drag on but some of it is classic  .

If you give me money, maybe ;).
Anyway, does anyone know if they've played Deadwing (as in the track) live? I love that track but of all the set lists I've seen it doesn't seem to feature in their live acts. Do not many people like it or something? I think it's a masterpiece, especially when it kicks back in after the bridge bit.

it's a massively popular song and there's huge demand for them to bring it back...
but it hasn't been on setlists since the original deadwing tour. so far at least, they might bring it back on rotation or something yet.

One of few songs I would go to the extent to call perfect. Love the live version on the DVD too, when the string breaks. :D

Trains was absolutely amazing in Manchester, they put loads of extra stops in it, building up to a massive ending.
Mmm  .
SW broke a string during Halo at Manch too, it was really funny seeing him just standing there singing whilst a roadie was scrabbling around him taking his guitar off and hanging a new one round his neck  .

Hmm shall I go to see these in notts on sunday?

That was the single most amazing gig I've ever seen :D (sorry Muse). Great set list.
Amplifier were good, but not as good as PT in my liking but that's probably something to do with the not-so-great guy mixer guy. Although I will give him credit for making the kick drum rattle my ribcage every time.

You are in for a treat; the opener is just so awesome (I imagine they'll play the same one). What I really liked is that you could hear every member of the band and Wilson's vocals fairly clearly - something that is usually lacking from live gigs.
Righty I'm convinced in going now ha.
*buys ticket*
God sake how hard is it to buy a ticket :stunned: there better be some on the door, I'll try ringing tomorrow. Keep getting errors on see and ticketmaster ain't selling em. It isn't sold out is it?
