Screaming/growling and other grungy metal vocal techniques

I have been singing for a while now- im fairly happy with my range and my voice as a whole. But i am in a rock band and the idea of screaming has struck a fancy with me. But the few times i have tried it either didnt sound right or tore my voice all to pieces so i couldnt sing for a day or so. What is the most succesfull technique for doing this? And is there a way to do it without hurting your voice so much? I know there is something im missing here because you see a talented vocalist like Chester bennington of Linkin park get up on stage and scream his ass off and then sing a great melody directly after.... any help would be greatly appreciated here. thanks :D

Its just practice. This will help your vocal chords get more resiliant (if you can already sing then they're probably pretty sturdy.) Also, its just a case of getting to know your own voice and learning how to make as much noise with the least effort and no damage. Maybe you should listen to different screamers and think about how they're making that sound.

ok, im not a pro, but i have done a lot of singing research tho. if u sing hard incorrectly, your putting force on delicate folds, and u may notice it hurts after a long session. now it'll hurt a lot quicker if u put more force. to be blunt, your fucking it up a treat, and a lot of pros have to have surgery to keep singing because they tear folds.

now knowing that, u prob still wanna do it. you'd have to research about it, probably through a proper teacher, but if your singing correctly, i heard that you can produce a loud sound whilst changing the style to screaming in such a way that its less damaging. this, however, involves learning to sing, and then styling it.

but knowing that, (lol), i doubt u'll fork out for lessons. so basically warm up (look on internet for advice) for around 20 mins, and drink lots of room-temperature water during the day. 30 mins before u sing helps (fluid gets to ur cords...when you drink, obviously it doesnt touch them, tho a lot of people dont realise until they think about it)
then i guess go for it......scream/sing convo

Yeah thats some good advice. NEVER do anything with your voice that causes pain. Its all about learning how to scream louder, not harder.

Well its just this brick wall i have hit because I am at the point now where i can handle some really high pitches- and i have a really good Disturbed/nirvana like grungy voice- that i basically use as my main voice in my band- but when it comes to screaming its not so great... i actually found it easier with a microphone- but its not flawless.

Hmm, basically I just take a really deep breath and let it all out. It helps if you sing close to the mic as well, just not too close! Milk it by Nirvana is a good song to cover if you want to practise screaming. Then you can move onto something a bit more advanced, like scentless apprentice :)

The safest way is to buy a vocal effects processor. They go from like $40 to $1,000. They can be used live or post-production and some can be controlled with foot pedals. Effects include breathy, chesty, and tons more depending on the one you get.

I play in a local band deep down mexico called NO SIGNAL its a bit of a post hardcore style we made a record which sounds pretty awesome (keeping in mind that local bands have no support from record companies as the us does) . the recording cuality sounds like a record by a band called DEAD TO FALL it has the same sound quality , but im not so happy with how the voice sounds ... actually it sucks keeping in mind that the person who recorded us has never done this kind of music .. my question is .. next time we do a record how are we supposed to record the voice? do we have to record it two or three times ? like a tripple voice? i want no know some tips so i can tell the guy from the studio he doesnt speak any english so ill just have to explain this to him.

EDIT: just listened to some of your music. i noticed the lead singer is yelling apposed to screaming, i think he would sound alot better if he screamed. make sure he uses his stomach when he screams, not his throat or he will tear up his vocal chords.

Everyone has a second set of vocal chords that are not fully grown in or something like that woman was talking about in the NPR clip. I think I've been able to nail it a few times by accident but I have not been able to always reproduce it.

I think the Celtic Frost and Rammstein have the coolest metal vocalists. Both of them have awesome "announcer man/oppressive leader" voices and the Celtic Frost singer does this Viking warrior shit that is fucking awesome. Both of them are very mensing. The Rammstein singer lost some punch but he's still pretty good. Tom Fischer of Celtic Frost is even better than before these days, with or without his vocal distortion.

I don't think you need expensive anything to get a good sound. Obviously it would be nice if everyone has beautiful mics and vintage pres and valve compressors, and it is a lot easier to get a good sound with such expensive stuff, but it can be done with cheap shit also. Especially rock sounds.

Way more people layer vocals than you think. If use subtly enough, it will sound more like a "fattening" chorus than a group of the same person singing. It also helps with the stereo image. Even if you don't want to record several layers of the same vocal line (I personally wouldn't bother) then a subtle stereo chorus, or just manually copying the wave and shifting it by 10ms, then panning them, will thicken the sound up.

Also, for Rock vocals, a dollop of overdrive is always useful.

There are vocal traning videos/tapes that you can download that are really good. All the big singers run through vocal exercises before the go on stage to look hardcore. It's quite funny if you get this DVD (I can't remember the name) there's loads of metal screamers singing funny sounds and high notes etc. All singers should have a set of excercises to run through.

i have been siniging for 14 years friends of mine hasve gone down this route and im afraid to say a common occurance is that you loose a little bit off the bottom ogf your range and quite a bit off the top. you'll start to struggle with flasetto. however there aere ways around it, it might seem a bit of a pathetic optrion but if you want to have a safe maintainable rock sounding voice your gonna have to get sining lessons otherwise youll be saying good bye to a fair bit of your ability :)

I don't know what hardcore is. I think I know what EMO is and I don't like most of the bands. I like Glass Jaw, and I think a load of EMO bands that have come out in the last couple of years sound a lot like Glass Jaw, added to a load of cheese.

I really like some good screaming, like deftones, glass jaw, watcha, slipknot and stuff. It's cool, you just have to use it well.

If "hardcore" is when some guy is putting on a low, growly voice, and trying to "shout" some unintelligible lyrics over the same old, unoriginal riffs, then I don't really like it. It's fun to watch the bands though, they're mostly quite funny. Not as funny as Slipknot obviously.

haha it doesn't matter what the lyrics are because you can't tell what they're screaming anyway. to be honest, these bands don't make it big because the musical structure is shit - the guitarists play metallica power chords and the solo is just some random scale they learnt in their guitar grade 8. that's on top of the crap lyrics that no one can understand. the only decent people in these bands are the bass players. the drummers are good but all they do is use double bass as fast as they can lol.

I've been screamin for 3 years in 2 different bands.
i have found that the best way to get the scream u want is to keep trying, practice is the most important.
The guitar player of my current band "a century of silence" works four days in camp and then we jam on his days off. After 4 days of no vocal work my voice goes to shit so keep those cords warm.

(scream using your abs and diaphragm or u will ruin your cords)

SCREAMING SHOULD NOT HURT!! Dont push, if you push you will distroy your vocal chords. If you would like to learn to scream correctly, check out "The zen of screaming" by melissa cross. She is a vocal coach and has taught many many famous bands that scream, including but not limited to lamb of god, killswitch engage etc. You will look like a fucking idiot doing most of these excersises, but it will help you to no end.

If you dont want to pay for it(and usually i dont condone downloading stuff), look for a bit torrent of the DVD. End of story, no more comments from people thinking they know how to scream etc.

Its just practice. This will help your vocal chords get more resiliant (if you can already sing then they're probably pretty sturdy.) Also, its just a case of getting to know your own voice and learning how to make as much noise with the least effort and no damage. Maybe you should listen to different screamers and think about how they're making that sound.

linkin park is a different technique from foo fighters-esque screaming, the foo angrier vocal is made by just (for me) tightening my throat and my voice becomes more growly. one thing i did notice is that smoking does help me for screaming for some reason.

totally warm up your voice... warm up for at least 15-20 minutes doing scales, octave leaps, glissandos, arpeggios e.t.c... then sing for a while to get the diaphragm going... If you can sing with no tension in your throat, increase the volume through your diaphragm... then your voice starts to vibrate so much you get the growl... please don't cheat and tense the throat because you'll do yourself more damage than sounding good!

I have been singing for a while now- im fairly happy with my range and my voice as a whole. But i am in a rock band and the idea of screaming has struck a fancy with me. But the few times i have tried it either didnt sound right or tore my voice all to pieces so i couldnt sing for a day or so. What is the most succesfull technique for doing this? And is there a way to do it without hurting your voice so much? I know there is something im missing here because you see a talented vocalist like Chester bennington of Linkin park get up on stage and scream his ass off and then sing a great melody directly after.... any help would be greatly appreciated here. thanks :D

warm your chords up first, i always have a beer handy to keep my throat moist, and start quietly, get to know your range and find which you can project. key changes arent cool till your down with the kids, word.

Its just practice. This will help your vocal chords get more resiliant (if you can already sing then they're probably pretty sturdy.) Also, its just a case of getting to know your own voice and learning how to make as much noise with the least effort and no damage. Maybe you should listen to different screamers and think about how they're making that sound.

I might get hatted on for saying it, but if you really wanna learn to scream then you gotta listen to Slipknot's Iowa, or self-titled. Corey Taylor's vocals are just nuts on some of their tracks. You don't have to like the band, but if you can sing/scream Wait and Bleed, or Left Behind like it's done on CD (NOT the live performance! He blows live) you've got it made.

I had already read a couple things with the whole screaming thing and, well I read a couple of these replys and I seriously don't want you do destroy your vocals since it sounds like you have somethin' goin' without the screaming even.

Also the coment with the mic. I know a vocalist for a scremo band and I was asking him a couple things. He said that a lot of his different pitches comes from the different ways that he cups his hands. I never heard this, but apparently he was able to sing a scream, that sounds totally off saying it like that, that was like two pitches at once, but it didn't show up when recording so he stoped that scream.

I don't know about Distorted Screaming (I don't know any of the bands you mentioned for it) but really, I'd only call the "clarity aka thoat" screaming actual Screaming, imo the Raspy and Death Growl sort of sound is completely different to screaming.

By the way, technically this isn't screaming or growling, but does anyone have any tips for getting that high-pitched shrieking sound like what Dani Filth from Cradle of Filth does? I can sort of sing falestto so I know I can achieve a high pitch, but I can't seem to get th shrieking sort of effect he uses. Kind of makes it hard to sing along with some songs.

i will now give you a lesson on how to scream,
i got this off some random guy on youtube.

a deep growl, is basically:
you know when you sigh, and you're slightly annoyed? that is basically your deep growl, so the steps into deep growling is:

1. Breath some warm air on your hand to warm up
2. do a normal sigh
3. do a annoyed sigh
4. do a angry sigh
5. use the sigh technique further and keep talking and try to manipulate it into different pitches

that is basically a Deep growl

now a scream that is forexample Trivium style....
Diaphragm use.
you have heard alot about this on youtube

basically, simulate that you're having a shit, and just push the scream.
for screaming n00bs, the diaphragm is just under your belly button (giggles) so if you're not sure how to simulate a poo (i hope for gods sake that you do) press under your belly button sometimes and just shout like normal, just using extra stomach power.
this is basically just a Trivium scream
to distort it, you have to find your own technique

the smartest one is to distort it through your chest, and NOT your throat.
i do my screams with Throat distortion, and trust me, its not reccomended
its really painful after a while

and btw, if you lose your voice, get a really sore throat after you've just started screaming, dont worry, its totally normal.
its just your vocal chords that is not used to the massive vibration.
they WILL be stronger after a while, so dont worry

Only because I saw it only touched upon...The one guy is right. A lot of it has to do with equipment. Maybe not so much a vocal processor but a good reliable set up that you know is right for you. You may want to try different mics, pre-amps, eq's etc. depending on the setting, you may have some trouble with feedback, so be choosy, and be flexible. Hopefully, you will be able to develop your voice enough to be able to do what you want in any sound environment. I agree with the one comment about 'strengthening' but i would recommend it more of 'conditioning' and 'developing.' You don't want to push too hard, if you don't hurt yourself right away, you will eventually, and it can hurt you even more years from now. Check out some vocal chord damage research, it's pretty priceless info for anyone who sings. "Tone and not Volume" is awesome advice! Learn how to use your breath along with your voice. You can sound like you're screaming, but not be. And you can teach yourself to growl without having to make an angry face. lol. Last, if you haven't checked out Mike Patton, then do so. I recommend the Angel Dust and Fantomas Millenium Monsterworks. Make sure you read the dates on the albums. You can learn a lot of basics if you pay attention to his genius. Good Luck!
