i think the whole band was!!!
some people are irritated by billy's voice but i love it! and they have their unique guitar sound that screams out pumpkins!! their last two albums were a bit of a letdown to me, but all the others are so brill that they make up for it.

mmmm this thread is my speciality, ive liked the pumpkins for 7 years...ever since i saw tonite tonite....i love the pumpkins because they were bold and original, and ridiculous and brilliant, melodic and distorted heavy and light and stood out like a sore thumb in the shitty music scene crumbling around them..billy corgan is a gem of a song writer, about 700 songs including unreleased material, but no matter wether it was commercial or a bside, bootleg or demo, the pumpkins put their souls into the records like possesed, fixed creatures who were in love with music and didnt care about the many people who wrote them off over the years...they released 8 beautiful commercial records, adore and machina being my favourites and have a lasting imprint on the pages of music industry, and my heart...i learned what good music is from them and now that they are gone i pass my love for them to another band who have captured my heart, a band who not suprisingly are very much influenced by the days they would meet after school and smoke and listen to the pumpkins... a band who i think have taken the muscial ideas of the pumpkins and others and stretched the beautifully to a higher dimension, MUSE -god i do love this band...but bring on billy's solo album!

The Pumpkins were my favourite band in my formative music years, largely due to Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness. However, as the years roll by I find myself taking to their more eclectic songs, which basically means that Gish, Pisces Iscariot & Adore have all gone up in my estimations. I think the fact they are so multi-faceted is one of the primary reasons why they have the following they do. There are few bands that have written such a diversity of material, take the disparity between the full-on epic space jam of Starla and the quiet, ethereal beauty of To Sheila as a good example. Music, for me at least (but for everyone else as well I'd wager), is about expressing emotions in creative, beautiful and interesting ways, something the Pumpkins did in spades.

And mmmm it depends really, I'd say download a few songs from different albums and see which ones you like best... Quoting my boyfriend I'd say buy Siamese dream because "it's the best album ever" hehehe

All their albums are unique and extremely good. I watched the documentary (again) lastnight and I was shocked to hear Billy say how critics panned Adore. This is them wanting you to like the same mindless shite over and over again. Billy grew creatively and the public didn't want him to because most were being small minded

its such a shame that most of the public couldn't accept that Billy was being creatively as good as any previous albums

bastards

theimpressiveclergyman

I'm confused- did Billy lose his hair or start shaving it off? You may laugh if you wish- I missed most of the nineties in the musically-ignorant blur that was my childhood. :D

andrzej
04-06-2004, 06:45 PM
It was a bit of both- if you look at the video to Bullet with Butterfly Wings, you'll see that his hair was recding pretty badly, so he cut his losses and shaved it off. It my opinion, he then lost his powers much like Samson.

Just a question... anybody has a picture of the "Pisces Iscariot" vinyl? My bf and I were told that the cover isn't the same as the CD one (and if I'm not wrong in the Aeroplane box-set also says that the artwork is different)... and as we're looking for this vinyl to complete our SP vinyl abum's collection it would be of a great help if we know how the cover is... just in case we would see it somewhere.

And with this post I put this thread where it deserves to be... in the front page... :D

The Pumpkins are simply awesome. Like Muse they combine perfect tunes with perfect lyrics. I went to their one and only concert in adelaide in 1996, and really only got into them in 95, I still listen to them all the time, and Zwan as well, which just seem like a happier version of SP. I only recently got hold of the Live at fox theatre, which is basically adore, and it is awesome, blank page is unbelievable live.
To go through some of my personal favourties, which there are heaps and heaps in chronological order: Snail, My Daydream, Mayonaise, Soma, Silverfuck, Starla, Soothe, Zero, Muzzle, Porcelina, Where Boys Fear to Tread, Bodies, Thru the eyes of Ruby, By Starlight, The Aeroplane flies high (turns left, looks right), Set the Ray to Jerry, Pennies., Blank Page, For Martha, Behold! the Night Mare, Stand inside your love, I of the mourning, Glass and the ghost children.

Well that list is clearly to long, if you like SP, you will buy all the albums in the end anyway, but Siamese is probably the place to start, because of tunes like Today, cherub Rock and Disarm.

Thank god Muse has been able to step up and take over from where SP left off.

The mellon collie concert was amazing, I had not been to many concerts previously at that time, and it was just the most powerful 2 hours of my life at that time. Since then, and a lot of concerts later, their performance is still in right up there in my favourites. Billy actually seemed to be in a pretty shit mood..but it almost made the songs better I think.

Reading reviews a while ago, the Pumpkins seemed like the perfect band for me, so I bought Gish and Adore, but never really got into them as much as I perhaps should have.

Corgan's voice just grinds on me and detracts from the music, and it seems a shame to miss out on a great band just because of the vocals. Did he ever let another band member take lead vocals on any track?

James Iha sings in a few songs:
Take me down, Farewell and goodnight, Believe, The Bells, A night like this, said sadly the last 4 being b-sides

Darcy sings in Daydream, which I think is a really cool song

They both sing in said sadly.

There are probably more, but those are the ones I can think of. Iha has his own Cd's as well.

James also sings on 'The Boy' in the 1979 single b-sides.

Wow, thank you for making me listen to SP right now!
I think Siamese Dream is the best album ever. Every single song on it is great! And Mayonaise beats 'em all. Great song. That always gives me the creeps. I love it. And it's so true. In every circumstance it is true. I don't quite know, what it's about, but it makes me feel like it is right and that's what makes it even the best song in the world for me.

Thank god that I was at the farewell-tour. I was real close to not going because noone would go with me. I'd bite my own ass.

I consider The Smashing Pumpkins to be one of the greatest bands of all time, despite the fact that I love Muse. They have inspired so many bands.

They were as big as nirvana. Some say that if Billy Corgan had blown HIS brains out, The SP would have been a lot more famous than Nirvana.

Also, to those who question the greatness of The SP, ask Matt what he thinks of them. Matt said in a TripleJ interview, that Soma, by the Pumpkins, was a huge influence on him when he was trying to form a band.

Long live the Pumpkins, they wrapped their wire around my heart and my mind. I'm their's forever now.

I own every single one of The Smashing Pumpkins' albums. I also have 4 rare Vinylls. They have been my favourite band for 6 years, and Gish is some of the best music I have ever heard. Window Paine... Snail all so freaking awesome... It's amazing to find out how many people support them, I thought I was an oddity.

also, I went to see A Perfect Circle when they came to perth, just so i could see James. At the end of the show he came to the railing where me and my mate were (I was in my Zero(Star) shirt, and he was wearing a shirt with Bugg's photo on it ! ) he heard us yelling "Bugg Superstar" and he laughed at us, and waved at us two, and walked off. My mate like... fainted. I was in shock.

During the concert, Maynard James let him play a song from his own album... I didn't find out the name. It was awesome... I heard James sing :D

hmm... just want you to know, in case you don't:
Billy Corgan is gonna release a solo album in spring next year.
Jimmy Chamberlin will release his album on January 25th. It's called 'Life Begins Again'

Billy's will probably be great, but he had some serious issues shortly and couldn't come up with great stuff. Hope he is over it now.
Jimmy's album will surely be great. Not mastered the best way, but musically great.

The Metro DVD is coming in 2006!

http://www.billycorgan.com/

:)

Jimmy Chamberlin's new solo album is coming out on the 25th of January... Corgan's is done as well but there's no release date for it yet. I cannot wait, they are both going to be excellent.

Anyway, I've been a fan of the Pumpkins for 8 years now... I wish they never broke up - I never got to see them live! That doesn't stop me from getting every good bootleg I can get my hands on. I've downloaded quite a few over the years... this band is just as amazing live as they are in the studio, words can't even describe it. They really are in a class of their own. People don't realize it...

If you can ever get the 1996/04/07 DVD, do so. I'd upload it somewhere but it's like 3.5 gigs :( The performance is unbelievable. Fuck You, Ruby, Porcelina, Cherub Rock and XYU are absolutely flawless; better than they sound in the studio. You have no idea how much better it is until you see/hear it. Amazing.

god, the pumpkins were the band that made me love music. i never really got into the nirvana group, i heard siamese dream and was hooked.

they were the first band i saw live, and it was amazing. i also saw them on their farewell tour and actually was in chicago for their last show ever. one of the saddest moments. man they were so good..

i have all their cds, plus the boxed set. quality music, which no doubt i bet influenced muse. i mean, guitars with pianos? what an idea?

Well, I understand this, but I do not think that REM took this 'cause the rhyme fits or another band (I can't remember its name now) took 1979 as an album name??? What is it???

I don't like Nigga's since my parents come from West Africa and they don't have any manners to me.I was just born in the USA and I am the "Beautiful ONE" for this reason. And don't get Angry when people feel this way because you don't know their situation.
I love the Smashing Pumkins though(Pumkin Smahed).Their music heals me.

siamese dream opened my eyes way back in the day, for christ sake I used to like nirvana *spits* siamese, mellon collie and adore ( not to mention Gish and Pisces) really opened my mind to guitar music with real heart and a visceral attitude at it's heart. It's what made me pick up the guitar and want to learn it. It's shaped my musical tastes all because it meaned something. I've spat bile about things that anger me and wept with things that upset me all to a soundtrack by the pumpkins. They've been a part of my life I am glad that I had through the hard and good times. If they are not remembered as an important part of the 90's guitar movement in years to come I will feel sorely cheated,

Favourite song (for personal reasons): Jupiter's lament.

Yes it was! I grew up listening to that album back in the day when music was recorded on something call tapes. Just last week I upgraded my tapes to CDS for Mellon Collie. How is that Machina... God of the Machines album(sorry if not right name)?

:D The Smashing Pumpkins are awsome!

Bakesh
24-06-2005, 05:28 AM
I like Machina better than Adore for some reason.... I think there's a lot more worthwhile songs on it.

I used to listen Siamese Dream and MC&tIS all the time. I used to go to sleep everynight with "By Starlight" playing on repeat, heh...I was in 7th grade then, and i still love the song (when i'm in certain moods).

Gish and Pisces Iscariot are great albums, too, but obviously a little unpolished when compared to their later albums.

I used to be huge into them, mainly because i had never seen/heard such a band with sooooo many songs. I mean, so many singles with so many b-sides and all of them are great (if you're an SP fan).

Honestly the only song I really can't stand was their first single after MC&tIS, and that was "The Everlasting Gaze", can't stand it :(

Sorry if this has been posted before but...

Billy has announced that he fully plans on REVIVING THE SMASHING PUMPKINS. He says he misses the songs and has been keeping this secret for about a year now. It's on his website, billycorgan.com. He DID also say on the radio however that it's not going to be the way we'd expect it...I took that as him saying he's not going to have the same band members, i.e. James Iha and D'arcy...I'm sure Jimmy Chamberlain will be in it though. What do y'all think?

I saw him on Wednesday and he was pretty good....nothing spectacular, but great nonetheless. I got him to sign something and he seemed pretty nice, but he also seemed like a pretentious dick, lol. I asked him if I could get a picture with him but he said (in a nice way) "nooo." I guess that made sense since there were so many people around him.

you know Billy was the main person who made all the music anyway...so who cares.

yeah billy did all the music, but it's just not the same as seeing them all together on stage. i've seen them twice, one with the full lineup and the second time with melissa auf der maur. the only reason why the second show kicked ass was the fact that it was in a small ass club and i was in the front row. the first one was in a huge arena and i wasn't all that close.

either way, i can't wait. i'm hoping james will come on board. and then i'm sure melissa auf der maur will play bass. but that is ok.

:yesey: Really excited...and the pumpkins are/were relatively fast in getting their albums out....if you consider that each album was pretty much released just a couple of years within each other...and that was in between touring too...but I think we're gonna have to wait longer for this new one...which you'd expect....it'll have to be a whole process of getting to know each other on a personal level methinks...before they can communicate on a musical level...

zwan = a result of james and d'arcy not being around to keep billy remotely in check. a far cry from the greatness that was the smashing pumpkins.

Adore is a great album.

I think fans expected another Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie, but Adore went towards mellow melodies and a soft approach that some might consider it as Smashing Pumpkins trying to be radio friendly.

I remember reading an interview with Billy Corgan saying once how 1979 was his favorite SP song, and he wanted to make an album that sounded more like that, and the result was Adore.

One of my favourite bands, and I am going to Download, but the Pumpkins are definitely not a Donnington band.

I am pretty confident that they will headline Reading and Leeds next year.

d'arcy won't for sure. melissa said she'd play if asked.

now james i think might possibly be coaxed into it, but i would think that billy would have talked with james before hand to get the ball rolling before announcing the tour and setting up dates.

i don't think i'll ever see them in their original lineup. :(
