when i was at V in the summer, they played two other new songs. they sounded heavier, darker and rockier than the ash of old... (and they rocked!) so...the new album could be worth getting
clones is good too. I think the songs i heard were 'renegade cavalade' and 'evil eye'

It is indeed little like their previous material. I still love 1977. I don't think too much of this new stuff. It doesn't seem right.
Apparently they're supporting Pixies in Germany...

I've only heard Clones on the radio so far, but yeah it seemed pretty different from the Free All Angels stuff. The distorted guitar kind of reminded me of Muse, but the drums and bassline seemed more metal influenced. The only thing was the vocal style didn't really suit the music, maybe he should have used a vocoder or something.
i like some of 1977. some of the new stuff is near unforgivable. that bit in there last single where he said "from the east to the west..." argh i swear that straight ripped off of p diddy or something.

Life less ordinary <thumbs up>. Clones is cool as well his voice dont really go with that heavier sound though i dont think.

i love Clones, reminds me of Stockholm Syndrome with the sound and the download only thing...
but it's ace itself, except the vocals dont really suit it properly but never mind :D

I like some Ash songs, but I can't say I like Clones. But hey, it'll probably grow on me. No, not even probably. It will, and I'll end up getting the album. Oh well.
And yes, the vocals don't really match.

I just cannot warm to ash. I really just hate them too much. I don't find their songs affective, just bland pop catchiness which is ok for the first few times you hear it but it doesn't have a lastability. I just can't see it, I don't envy those who do that much either as I have enough bands on my frikkin download list lately.

I think Ash are good. Got Meltdown last week and its got some tunes that will become classics like Burn Baby Burn and Girl Form Mars. I like Evil Eye and Renegade Calvacade. Vampire Lovers is good too.
Saw them at Oxford a while back. They were good then. There just really upbeat pop rock. They'll still be around in years to come though :)

I bought Ash’s latest album yesterday. Fuck me, its actually pretty decent, I was pleasantly surprised. They really have come on leaps and bounds since their other albums. Rich has really done them justice. The production is awesome. And Tim’s guitar solos are bloody frightening!!! Evil eye is probably my fav track.

Think the new albums absolutly fantastic, I really liked ash before but the new albums put them even higher in my mind. It's a nice bit of variation from some of the more poppier stuff and there is some truely rocking tracks in there, clones just gets better and better the more you listen to it.

i saw ash last night at the hall for cornwall and it was fucking amazing. :D even despite driving in thick cornish fog for 2 hours to get there.
go and see them if they come to your city, it's worth the effort.
I think ive only heard of their new tracks, it has the video where they're racing with numbers above the cars and stuff.
Must say pretty rocky and I defo like. Their older stuff was pretty mello and catchy and yea I liked, but if all the new stuff is like that then I think i might get into them more.

why did you have to walk 20 metres? from your house? luckily i got there at 5 to 7, so only had to queue in the rain for a couple of minutes.
nice one on getting in the front row - i was a couple of rows back on the left which was still great. still squashed but nowhere near as bad as muse at westpoint - remember that?!?
hall for cornwall was a good venue too - just the right size and decent sound.

Got a new album of theirs a few weeks ago..it's great and has my fave Ash track on...I got 41 songs for £5.99 so I'm chuffed with that.. ^_^
Fave songs on the album have to be Burn Baby Burn, Sometimes, Shining Light, Girl From Mars, Kung Fu, Envy, There's A Star, Candy and A Life Less Ordinary.
Their new album is great and I love it but I prefer 'Intergalatic Sonic 7"s'..they sound so different on their new album so I prefer their older stuff.

I've always loved Ash, but I like the new stuff in particular.
Vampire love, Evil eye and Orpheus are excellent.

i always thought nu-clear sounds was an under-rated Ash album, just that it took a different, and even darker direction from the very popular 1977 i think confused a lot of people in that they were expecting 1977part2 or more upbeat pop twaddle of that ilk.. but i'm not an Ash fan though, some of their stuff i like, but i really liked Nu-clear sounds out of all their albums they've done.. the one thing that really bothers me about Ash are Tims vocals, which sound very weak otherwise lyrically and musically they're quite good! better than a lot of bands!

Saw Ash at our end of year ball last night (Hull Uni), and they were freakin amazing! Played more old stuff than new stuff with such classics as Goldfinger and Kung Fu, i couldnt have asked for any more. They made a fantastic night absolutely perfect, cant beat going absolutely mental in a suit:D

It is a shame about the 'no more albums' news, but I don't think that'll mean we'll hear less of them. If they bundle B-Sides into their singles, there is every chance they'll be as good as recent album tracks. Not that Ash have particularly bad B-Sides anyway...

I saw them at ULU in March and I'm off to see them at KOKO this Tuesday, shall be an immense night. -grins-
Their new album sounds pretty good from what I've heard. They'll finally get the recognition they so justly deserve.

The title track is badly mixed I feel. I have a live version, shortly before the song was renamed and it sounded immense. This version sounds unfinished. The guitar is too quite in places, and vocally sounds a little lifeless... Not to say I don't like it though. Polaris has the same problem with the vocals too, although I still enjoy it alot.
Anyway i'm playing tracks 7 through to 11 lot. They're my fave five at the minute!

Ah, thanks. :)
saw them last night at Rock City
they were IMMENSE!
The set and the lights were fantastic!
And they played 24 songs including one that theyd never played live before.
They had quite a few techical difficulties (including the guitarists rack losing all power mid song)
I went and congratulated the lighting guy at the end and he gave me a set list! :D
But yeah...really really good songs! Really really good live! Really really good set!
Definately up there in my top gigs! :yesey:
And it was cool how many songs I had completely forgotton about!

One heck of a gig in Nottingham, technical difficulties aside (were kept entertained with a drum solo from Rick when Tim's guitar cut out).
Has to be the best gig I've been to this year (apart from the Muse Wembley shows).
Setlist was this:
Lose Control
You Can’t Have It All
Orpheus
A Life Less Ordinary
Shining Light
Clones
Goldfinger
I Started A Fire
Polaris
Walking Barefoot
Princess Six
Jack Names the Planets
Folksong
Kung Fu
Renegade Cavalcade

I saw them in Bristol on Sunday, they were fantastic! Unfortunately I only stayed for about two thirds of their set as I had to catch the train home, I was really disappointed.
It was a bit weird - for the first 2 songs the crowd was hardly moving at all. Then the 3rd song started (Orpheus) and it went mental!
To be honest, before seeing them I only knew a handful of their songs. But I have since aquired all their albums and I want to see them again

Wondered if anyone else went to Ash's 1977 gig at the Roundhouse tonight (Friday). It was awesome - 1977 played in full, b-sides, covers, classic tracks and a new track! It was really a night for every sort of Ash fan. And nearly 2 hours on stage for £20!!
The Roundhouse is a great venue too - just need to get in front of the pillars.
I kept thinking how fantastic it would be if Muse did something similar - but which album would everyone want to hear?

Maybe Muse will do a bit of a retro gig before the new album is released!

I can't remember where I read it but I recall reading that after the run of 26 singles they were going to let fans vote on which were the best and release them as an album.
If that's true then I suppose it isn't a 'traditional' album anyway though.

I wasn't expecting the ending either.
I don't think you'll be able to get them all in one go by the way, Raiko. There'll probably be 1000 vinyls per single like Return of White Rabbit, which had sold out in a month, give or take a week or so, so it's probably safer just to get each single as they come out, or two per month or something. If they weren't so limited I'd just get them all in one go or in four or something too, though.
Raiko
17-09-2009, 11:18 AM

I really think they need Charlotte back in the band. Twilight of the Innocents was an average album at the best of times, and most the A-Z stuff so far has been below par for a band that produced 1977, Free All Angels and Meltdown (3 Immensely good albums). I can understand that they wanted to go back to a three piece after Meltdown which is fair enough but they dont seem to have raw song writing energy that came when they wrote 1977 and there far older now aswell.
Tim and Charlotte worked well as guitarists together, both extremely talented, and their vocals worked brilliantly together.
Im glad Russell Lissack is joining for the tour so Im hoping for some more Free All Angels/Meltdown material.
That said does anyone feel Ash have slowly slid into obscurity? Get Charlotte back, write an album that meets between the Pop elements of FAA and the Riffs of Meltdown and BAM! They could be massive again.
Ive still never got over them Headlining the NME stage at Reading 07 when Razorlight headlined the main stage. Should have been the complete other way round.

I'm loving some of the recent stuff, it has to be said. Far better than most of FAA even.
And love the way you've completely forgotten Charlotte's first album, Nu-Clear Sounds  it never happened. It just didn't.

Is there any chance for subscribers to get a hold of the Japanese bonus tracks on the compilation, like as future bonus tracks, or no?
I desperately wanna hear Empire of Sand, but yeah Gallows Hill has outdone most of the singles. And you're right about the first batch being better than the second. After about Space Shot it went a bit weird.
Dionysian Urge was pretty catchy though. Perhaps it's looking up a bit now.

I'm pretty excited that Ash are going to be playing at Splendour in the Grass in Australia.
I've been a fan for so many years and have never got the chance to see them live, so I hope they do what lots of Splendour bands do and stop off over here either before or after the festival!

It's pretty damn good, Joy Kicks Darkness, The Dead Disciples, Space Shot and Dionysian Urge are classic Ash.
If you want to bone up:
Return Of White Rabbit
True Love 1980
Joy Kicks Darkness
Arcadia
The Dead Disciples
Neon
Dionysian Urge
Dare To Dream

Bought the CD today, mainly out of support. It was a pretty brave move for them to start releasing everything as singles, but it hasn't been to much success really. You just can't trully support singles like this unless you're a big, big band and it appears Ash may struggle to find the success they once had. At least in the UK it seems. I hear they're still doing well for themselves over in Japan.

Yeah they were always quite loved over there. Also apparently America fell in love with Ash in the late-90's, but I'm yet to see someone prove this to me.

It's balanced too, perfect mix of new/old and a split of about 75% heavy to 25% mellow. Perfection.
Joy Kicks Darkness is the best thing Ash have done in years, TOTIs was a good album but aside from the title track and Dark & Stormy, it's pretty average. Infact, A-Z has spawned some quality tracks so far - Arcadia, JKD, The Dead Disciples, Space Shot and Dionysian Urge in particular.

No, I wasn't wearing a Muse tee.
I uploaded a video of The Dead Disciples to Youtube. The sound quality is poor though and it gets a bit shaky at times, it was lively in front of Tim.
