Oceansize is my discovery of the year (so far); so nice when you stumble into something you want to listen to over and over again. Anyone else into these guys? :)

Really? I find that hard to believe. Is this music not your cup of tea or did they lack energy or something?

Are there any oceansize fans out there? I saw them last year supporting The Cooper Temple Clause and they were out of this world. I recommend them to any muse fan. Their songs are just so adventurous and keep you on the edge of your seat. I recommend you check out their debut album "effloresce", you wont be disapointed!

oceansize should be one of the biggest bands in britain. the new album actually surpasses effloresce (somehow) Just listen to a homage to a shame, it has one of the most incredible endings to a song i've heard for a while. Amplifier and oceansize are the future of post rock, amplfiers new ep is excellent as well, the astronaut dismantles hal. To be honest, I think the only reason why we'll probably never see either of them support muse is because muse would be afraid of being upstaged. And it wouldn't be that much of a shock really

Homage To A Shame is brilliant, as is the rest of their new album.

The new Amplifier EP is pretty good too, a slight disappointment after their debut which is a phenominal album.

Definitely two great bands.

Bloody fuck, I come back here for the first time in about a year and see this old beast of a thread from the main forum page. It's fate I tells ye'.

So basically I'm still the massivest Oceansize fan in the world and have some facts for you:

Oceansize are one of the best live bands kicking about (I'd personally say better than the "M" word). They're really down to earth and lovely people (Mikes a sweetheart) The two new songs they've played live are shaping up to be cocking amazing The last half of Everyone Into Position on the CD is very very good. It is one bajillion times better live (due partly to rough album production, partly due to live intensity) Oceansize are best experienced and understood on drugs. The band encourage this.

Long Forgotten is one of the acest songs ever written.

The strings in Long Forgotten are robbed from Rocky II. This is part of the bands (read: Gamblers) obsession with the Rocky trilogy. Does help make it a beautiful peice of music though. Long Forgotten has only ever been played live once.

Oceansize is fucking brilliant! My favorite band after Muse and Radiohead. They are very good live, their songs are very clever. The guitars create amazing walls of sound! They should be very big and I hope they have a break-through with their next album without becoming too musically accessible ..

What are your favorite tracks? Mine are:

- Women who love men who love drugs
- Saturday morning breakfast show
- Long Forgotten
- Massive Bereavement
- Catalyst
- The Charm Offensive
- A Homage To A Shame
- Music for a nurse
- You can't keep a bad man down
- Drag the nal/Dead Dogs and all sorts

The first track I heard, The Charm Offensive, is probably my favorite. The first four tracks on that album are all great, as well as New Pin and No Tomorrow. One Out of None, As the Smoke Clears, I am the Morning, One Day All This Could Be Yours... those are great too, among others. :D

I want to do music at your college, that mans got a bag full of talent.

You walked *past* Mike? Now see, you did something very wrong there, I highlighted it for you so you don't do it again.

they supported Fightstar the other night apparently (and are doing the whole tour i believe), and most fans didn't seem to like them according to a friend.

Yeah, I heard they got some bottles chucked at them at birmingham (couldn't go cause I was too ill :() but Mike played it off with some banter. Read a review in a magazine (I think) that was pretty damning of the Fightstar crowds for being such dicks and not knowing good music when it's blasting out of a PA inches from their ears. Funny actually because apparently Fightstar are massive fans.

MY GOD THESE GUYS ARE AWESOME LIVE

Women Who Love Men Who Loves Drugs and Catalyst and Amputee and No Tomorrow and Ornament were outstanding.

I'm pretty straight but my god isn't Mike adorable :$ :$ :$

Anyway .. ahem .. Equipment and sound were shite, Mike got annoyed with microphone especially.

Support bands were a bit meh. And one drunken loony in the crowd was annoying.

The end of Unfamiliar is quite possibly my favourite ending to any 'size song. Maybe even any part of any one of their songs, outside of maybe parts of Ornament/The Last Wrongs. Just so good.

I nearly went to seem them at Cardiff but I'm glad I didn't...

The club fucked them over hugely. They were forced offstage at 9:50 so the club could run it's normal wednesday night thing, one support band was cut and Oceansize had to half their setlist.

They made up for it in Bristol the next night by playing a two hour show. I wish I'd gone to that :(.

Mneme
16-10-2007, 04:27 AM
That truly sucks about the Cardiff show...I wonder what's so great about the usual Wednesday routine that they had to trash the proper entertainment! Pretty stupid--lucky they didn't cause a riot! But as you said, Bristol more than made up for it! God, I'd love to have them come over here to that State Theatre where I just saw PT--man, a two hour Size show would simply blow the roof off the place! I found some nice pics from a Size fansite--this one was taken at the club in Stoke where they just played on Sunday (this pic of course is from the same venue, but the show was in 2004)--check out how small the stage is, they're just jammed together up there, probably banging elbows!

http://www.peripheralanomaly.co.uk/Photos/Photobands/Oceansize100204/Stoke100204_Oceansize_24.JPG

Now that would have been a great show to be at...I do love a small club with a great band onstage--sure beats the arena vibe!

There's more from this site, it's pretty good--have a look:

Music for Nurses EP is brilliant. Seriously everyone listen to it now cause it's pure greatness from start to finish.

And Frames has its moments, as Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions.

Haven't posted in here in a while ..

Seems like Oceansize are already working on the fourth album

so, as reported seemingly yonks ago, album 4 is on the move. have we nearly finished it? like fuck have we. we're still in the fun jammy bit of it, where no-one knows how the song sounds or how it's gonna sound, just playing random tunes and liking it or not liking it. work has been pretty sporadic, with breaks for festivals, lurgys and kong and doing home stuff, but when the momentum gets going it feels good to be back in 'the zone' as mertallica call it.

as per usual there is little planning, no specific manifesto, although maybe we'll get a bit stringent once we start the proper recording process (which will be done at our own scabby room). so far, where 'frames' was planned as being dark and uneasy, this new fella we're planning on making more 'upbeat' and 'grooving' but 'not in a fucking heaven-a-bastarding-live' way. most of the ideas so far have lots of energy and beans, whilst still being a bit dreamy and.... uneasy. so far there's more emphasis on the drums and bass, which are PHat and weird, more frantic (tic tic tock etc etc)...

some of the titles: fast riff (although strangely there are no riffs in this song so far.. ), mong arm of the law, vim, self-replicating gamb elves and (as usual) loads of other bits all named after the respective author. imaginative.

so there you have it, little progress to you perhaps, but it's coming along lovelyly.

disclaimer: all of the above is subject to change.

tomorrow we'll practice 'you wish' for the first time in 4 years. gulp.

Looking forward to those anniversary gigs in October. 3 gigs, 3 albums, guaranteed amazingness and I FINALLY get to see 'The Frame' and You Wish live :)

New EP being recorded atm which will be a 30 minute refrained release, more in the style of Music For A Nurse apparantly, very few riffs, if any. Should be cool.

Also, four disc live CD/DVD boxset coming out featuring live performances of every song of their recorded at their 10th anniversary shows in Manchester last year.

Im sure Oceansize can pull it off though. I read an interview, probably the one you got this info from, and it saddens me to read that it seems like Oceansize are struggling financially. Not like really broke... but they deserve more.

Just bought my ticket to see Oceansize at Heaven in Feb, quite glad the tour was rescheduled otherwise I probably would have missed it!

Technically this will be the second time I've seen them, although the first time I literally stumbled into their gig at Sonisphere last year and the sound was so horrendously awful I couldn't stay. I'd also had one too many Jagers and was in that stage of drunkenness where I just couldn't handle appreciating anything more complex than 3 chords, so I'm hoping this next gig will be a bit more successful...

New songs were kinda underwhelming but that's just due to not knowing them very well. Part Cardiac is a strange song, it's basically the same thing for five minutes, strangely hypnotic though. I managed to squeeze pretty close to the front at Heaven, I like to believe there was some eye contact going on whilst I stood there with a ridiculous grin on my face...got a half decent video of You Can't Keep A Bad Man Down (apart from a security guy right in the way) which I should get round to sticking on youtube soon.

Edit: here is it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOnNdYZ2iJg. Sorry, not that great quality after all.

The technical difficulties were a shame, you could see the guys were pretty frustrated by the end but I still thought it was incredible.

Don't know about anyone else but I thought ASIWYFA sounded amazing. Unfortunately the guys in front of me clearly didn't have the patience for instrumental music but they were epic for the whole set. I love getting decent support bands :D

Well, it appears the 4 minute song thing was a bit of a joke, but only kind of:

G: A while ago I posted a statement on our website saying that the new album will be “fifteen songs, all under four minutes.” This was obviously a joke, but it’s not so far from the truth. Most of the songs are shorter, more concise. We didn’t set out to write shorter songs, it just happened; we didn’t feel the need to drag them out and elaborate on them any further than necessary. I think we’ve been tarred with the ‘oh-they-write-long-proggy-songs’ brush so I think a few people will be quite surprised.

Well, I do rather like their "long proggy songs", but I'm pretty stoked about this new release.

And I just found this bit amusing:

SK: When can fans expect a release?

G: All being well, it should hit the shelves in early September. Of course all the impatient, thieving fuckbags of this world will already have downloaded and shared it way before then.

Must not listen to leaks. :stunned:

Some independent record shop just off Argyle Street. I can't remember what it was called; I hadn't been in there before. They had a tray on the floor of CDs that were all a pound each.

Anyway, having listened to it now, I quite liked it. It reminded me of Pure Reason Revolution, but with shouty bits that I wasn't really expecting. I'll need to listen to it again though. I don't feel that I can form a proper opinion yet.

Everyone into Position has the most solid individual song and Frames is just excellent as one continuous album.

Their name is a bit uninteresting which made me ignore them for a very long while until I got so desperate for new music I decided to try them.

Next to the albums, their B-side collection is impressive as well.

I've been down there a few times and can't think for the life of me what shop you mean. Do you know what it's called?

I'm defo going down there if they sell CDs like that for that cheap.

The name is what made me curious about them, because I was a big Jane's Addiction fan a lifetime ago. 'Cause you know, the song, Oceansize? :erm:

Yeah, the name is actually what intrigued me about the band (besides the fact that they got mentioned quite a bit in a prog thread on another forum I used to go to), mostly because it had the word 'ocean' in it. When I think of ocean, I think of lush, exotic, surreal which is what I expected the music to be like. Those descriptions don't quite fit the overall music although the band is still fantastic nonetheless and it was a great discovery.

They are a grower band. I like them the more and more I listen to them.

Oh, and does anyone know where I can find guitar tabs for Trail Of Fire? It seems like the only tab for it on the internet is a Guitar Pro tab which I'm too arsed to download and it costs money. Right now I'm searching their main website. If anyone could help, that would be great.

Massive Bereavement is a masterpiece. I love the way the song starts as a slow, relaxed, kind of hypnotic piece and then you get that colossal noise build up, and then from 5 minutes to the end it's just an absolute rocker of a song. Easily one of my favorite 'Size songs.

My favourite part is about eight minutes in when there's this slight lull (very slight, haha, with three electrics going at it full tilt) and the high cleanish rhythm part establishes the new pace, and then it builds to the lead screaming over top of that and another rhythm part supplementing everything. Woah - just woah. :D

Are you referring to 7:47 - 8:52? If so yes, that's amazing. I love the part at 8:41 - 8:50 when it just starts to fizzle out and then it just kicks back in and that section just carries the song all the way to the end. Amazing. I just feel like the entire ending is easily one of the most climactic endings to any song.

(btw as you can tell I'm not great at describing music so I have to use time sections of the song itself :p)

Hehe, I'm right there at that section again as I write. There's so much cool shit going on there - it would such fun to isolate all the parts and see how nicely they mesh together. Can you imagine rehearsing and recording it? Wow.

Part of what makes the whole effort getting this down in the studio so impressive is that they write a lot of odd time-signatures into their music, so it's rarely just you know, 4/4 or some standard rock beat, but more like 7/8 or 9/16 or whatever. I have a lot of fun trying to count it out while :$ doing the air drumming, lol.
