Juicebox. It's not one of my favourites, but it's not bad. I'm happy they're trying new stuff and not just churning out the same sound.

Can't stand them any more, so generic
So generic because every other band has tried to copy them. Usually very poorly.

Personally, I think they're one of the most influencial bands around. Nobody had heard of anything like them when they first came into the scene, now that simple-ish catchy style of music is being mutated everywhere...only everyone else is shit.

I just downloaded the opening track from the new album..it's splendid. Much better than Juicebox.

i agree, the strokes were the first ones out of the bag, so they sort of got drowned out by the rest that followed.

i heard Juicebox recently and it's different, in a good way. nice to see them trying new things. i'd be interested in hearing the new album, thats for sure.

i was reading my NME and found some interesting things:
"...listen carefully and you'll uncover all sorts of weird and wonderful influences, from Magnetic Fields and the Pogues to - we shit you not- Muse (check Vision of Division's spiralling choruses)."
"Nick claims that the sounds of Muse, SOAD and AC/DC all contributed to the meatier guitar parts..."

should be interesting as the Strokes also seem to have influenced Matt a bit.

Pst. Here's one of the Muse-inspired tracks. It's from a radio session where they played a few tracks... They haven't finished mixing so there's going to be quite a difference on the official release.

how? I've read that you can only buy tickets at the door? 'Cause I read this at the Plato website: Secret Gig!

All of their albums are great... Is This It is a fucking classic, Room On Fire has genious guitar work and great songs, First Impressions Of Earth is a revolution, with influences like System Of A Down and Muse.

Gotta love Hard To Explain, Someday, Alone Together, Soma, Reptilia, 12.51, The End Has No End, Meet Me In The Bathroom, Whatever Happened, You Only Live Once, Razor Blade, Heart In A Cage, 15 Minutes Of Pain and Ize Of The World.

Well, I've bought the album four days ago and it's pretty addictive.
I've been listening to it nearly exclusively since then.:D

Julian's vocals make the album for me, I think he's really come into his own in this one. He's not hiding behind that microphone for one thing!:p

... and the 'sound' is different.
Mmm, there's still one or two tracks that sounds way too similar to what they did on Room on Fire (e.g. Fear of Sleep :stunned: ).

However, they're most successful I think when they have taken risks and experimented further with their sound, case in point 'Juicebox'.
I think it makes for a very solid album, with great songs!
(Heart in a Cage must be surely one of their best!)

Despite all I've said, I think it feels like a 'transition' album. With the success of the most 'experimental' tracks, I think we're going to see a very different 'Strokes' in their next album .. and I'm so much looking forward to that.:D

As to the Muse influence ... Mmm, couldn't see very much myself, I must say.
Well, there's that 'Spanish guitar' bit in Vision of Division!
... and there's a line that could be just a wee dig at them ... ( or other bands) in 'God is trying to talk to you. We could drag it out but that's for other bands to do ....'
What do you think?:p

Last thing ... I adore their intros! Did you notice how some songs have an intro that reminds you of another song and then ... changes totally into something else?
Juicebox ---- Batman tune
You only live once --- That Ice ice baby song ...

I could go on for ages about it ...
better leave it at that just now.

anyways I've been into the Strokes before Muse actually...I was onto the Strokes at the very beginning...and I'm a New Yorker...and I interviewed to intern with them...so I might have loyalties with them.

I reckon putting that track at the beginning was what made the whole album so impressive! I didn't like them much when i heard 12.51 or Last Nite on radio many years back, then when FIOE came out one of my mates kept on pushing me into buying it. I'm glad i did! I used You Only Live Once for a design project video soundtrack, proved to be a great success. I named them my heroes. Now that's something Muse didn't get :p

On a NZ music magazine called Rip It Up there was "The Strokes Guide to New York" with Albert Hammond Jr., that was pretty much the only reason i bought that issue

I now that I think of it... all the first tracks of their albums are brilliant! LIKE! "What Ever Happened?" and "Is This It"! Awesome tracks! You Only Live Once and What Ever Happened? I just them love to death! Video project with You Only Live Once, Good work. :D

I just find it bores me. Other than a couple of songs it's just quite average, and they're a far from average band

Yeah,in your opinion.

Have to agree there.

1st album = great, summed up their sound perfectly. each song brought something slightly different to the album.

2nd album = mostly uninteresting. reptilia and 12:51 stand out, but aside from that there were few other good tracks.

3rd album = a good comeback. a lot more quality songs, but didn't flow right as an album in places.

The Strkes were great back in 2001, Is This Is It was and still is a great album Hard To Explain and Last Nite both excellent and catchy as fuck singles. Room on Fire was an alarming dissapointment howether and despite returning to form with First Impressions of Earth I still don't think they will ever be able to reach the heights of the first album

One thing I like about the Strokes is that they are very orchestrated, there is always that set control over it, you know what is coming is very safe and catchy. I like the way they can put all the different rhythms together and put unusual notes in the middle of songs, but my favorite song of all is Trying Your Luck, is the best.

looks kewl, but still.

They are still working on a new album, it's scheduled for release 'in the early stages of next year', that's all that anyone knows. This one's already been recorded so apart from a small US tour (lucky bastards!) it shouldn't really affect the release of the Stroke's record all that much.

Anyway, from that preview I am absolutely STOKED, such a huge change in sound with layered synths and bass-heavy beats, it sounds awesome! I've listened to it an unhealthy amount of times already. Couldn't really care less if Strokes album is delayed for a bit if it means a whole extra one from Julian, and it's only a few months away! At least it will keep me tided over until new Strokes does actually drop.

I think I need to make his own page or something..

I adore his album, even though it's only 8 tracks long there are some fantastic songs on there. Was thinking of starting a separate thread but I'd probably be the only person posting considering the lack of love for Strokes solo efforts. Went to his tour last week and it was amazing.
If anyone's interested he's also covered an SNL Christmas song called I Wish it Christmas Today.

Having said all that, I can't wait for the new Strokes album either, I think they start writing/recording next year.

I'd argue if I could :p Except for the fact that probably the last month has been spent as an excited mess, and now it's beginning to climax. Could be messy...

I bought Is This It? On a whim the other day, because I heard it was good....I was blown away. Every song is so perfect. Never once have I listened to an album and liked every song on it. I've been listening to their other stuff too, which is amazing. God this band is awesome :awesome:

I was exactly the same, I'd heard good things, and I knew that 'Is This It' was meant to be one of the albums of the decade, so I figured it was worth a go. Well every single song hit me immediately, it was perfect start to finish. And then when you take into account the fact that Someday and Hard to Explain are amongst the very best songs of a very, very long time, and you've got a real gem.

The other two albums, I think, are still absolutely amazing, but maybe just contain one or two weak songs each, which ITI doesn't. Either way, seeing them live will be an amazing experience :D

Time for me to be a bitch to you all....

But just got back from Splendour in the Grass, and they absolutely killed it. The set list was absolutely perfect for me. The Modern Age, Soma, I Can't Win, Whatever Happened, Under Control. I wasn't expecting any of these, but as each of them started, I lost my shit a little bit more. Not to mention Someday, Heart in a Cage and You Only Live Once.

Words can't explain how goot the set was. Half way through The Modern Age, I almost started crying out of complete joy.

I really couldn't imagine that show being topped through the festival. Until Mumford and Sons last night. Somehow, I think they just pipped them. But bloody hell, it was something fucking else.

For some reason, I feel a sense of nostalgia when I listen to The Strokes. I don't know why, considering their music isn't really that old. Anyone else agree?

Saw them 2 weeks ago and they were great. Julian sang the Thundercats theme song. :chuckle:

I agree! But it it makes me feel sad to see how this amazing band almost split :stunned: I know they're releasing a new album in 2011 but it sounds like the last one :( And I won't miss them on the next Tour.

But all the solo projects were brilliant. Especially for Julian Casablancas ! His album is soo good, and I like Nickel Eye songs too. But they are definately better together!
