I'm quite getting into them now. It takes a while cos the whole genre of cheese metal isn't my thing but nightiwsh are good at what they do. They are better than most of their finnish counterparts. If HIM and Rasmus can do it then I think its Nightwish's turn next.

I like their cover of "Phantom of the Opera" or whatever it be officially called :)

I've also got "Nemo" and "Gethsemane" :D

So who likes them?

and what other songs should I check out?

I really didn't think Nightwish was my sorta thing, but I'm getting into it now

Hmm I heard 'Nemo' on Kerrang today..and I thought it was weird to begin with because I thought her voice was quite 'operatic' to go with that style of music..but I enjoyed it none the less and hope to hear some more of their songs soon...

Well to be honest, I don't know what's good about them. I mean alot people are against Evanescence, but Nightwish are just total fakers of them.
Why then hate Evanescence and adore Nightwish?

I find it hard to understand how Nightwish can be fakers when they have been around since 1996, which I believe is before most of the bands they apparently are fakers of started...

Anyway, I think Nightwish are great, Century Child is the only album of theirs I have and I would definitely have it in my top 5 albums. I particularly love 'Beauty of the Beast' - a masterpiece, 10 minutes of brilliant music with several dramatic tune changes. The singer has an amazing opera voice, I don't usually like opera but it fits quite well with this band.

"Nemo" is good and the cover of "Over the hills and far away" is great!

I heard a couple of their songs a few years ago... it was ok but the vocals and lyrics were very cheesy, and the synth-metal idea is a bit overdone.

Ok, to anyone who's intrested about the band... (although the thread has been quiet for almost an year)

Tarja Turunen, the singer of Nightwish is being kicked out from the band due to conflicts by other four members. It was told at their website last night, in a open letter that Tuomas Holopainen, the songwriter, wrote to Tarja. It explains quite a lot.

The band is still going to continue without her, and will find a new female singer.

They are looking for a new singer.

Wow, this thread has been DEAD!

They're coming back, so this should too.

I really want to see them on their UK tour in March, but nobody I know is a fan, and it probably would be the roughest crowd i'd have ever been in at a gig, and don't want to face that alone =]

I like NW for there ballad songs like ,"Swanheart".

But to be honest I am more of a fan of Tarja. She has the greatest, most versatile, and emotional voice that I think I will ever hear. She can touch your soul like no one else can.

I've never heard a classically trained vocalist cross over into rock and pop as well as she can. For each song she can come up with a particular voice for it. Listen to,"Breath From Heaven", to hear how versatile her voice is.

I would love to hear her work with Matt, I think her voice on a song with the range that Matt writes into his melodies would be awesome.

It's amazing that some kids actually thinks this is metal, it's nothing else but pop music.

Having bought the new Nightwish album 'Dark Passion Play' on the day of release, it's become one of my favourite albums by any band. I quite agree that some of their tracks are 'pop', but I would bet the poster before me hasn't listened to a Nightwish album through from beginning to end, as 'Ghost Love Score' from 'Once' and 'The Poet and the Pendulum' from 'Dark Passion Play' are very far from what most would consider 'pop music'.

Has anyone else got anything positive to say about Nightwish?

Liking Anette's voice a lot, especilly on Eva. Stunning. I like her versatility as well. She's a lot more contemporary than Tarja, which I reckon does make Nightwish lose some of its uniqueness, but I still like the music equally :)

Hi guys,

I've got one standing ticket to sell for Nightwish at the London Astoria on Tuesday 25th March, £21.25, doors at 7pm.

Basically I bought too many (I always get over-keen thinking loads of my friends will want to go, then end up having to shift some of them), so I have this one ticket spare.

Picture of ticket here - http://atlas.ashort.info/temp/nightwish-ticket1.jpg

I'm asking for £21.25 which is what I paid per ticket (including all the booking fees etc.) plus £4.50 for Royal Mail Special Delivery.

I accept online banking transfer or paypal, and will send the ticket the same day on receipt of payment where possible, otherwise will send it the next day.

Also got one standing ticket for Serj Tankian at the London Forum on Thursday 3rd April, £23.75 plus postage, doors at 7pm. I've made a similar post for this in the Serj Tankian thread.

They're also on eBay (username "thegenesis", a bit more expensive on there than I'm offering here) but if someone replies here before anyone bids on/buys them on eBay then I'll cancel the auctions. Please PM me if interested and also pass this on to anyone you think might be interested, I just wanna sell them at this point so they don't go to waste!

Thanks all,

- Kim

I saw Nightwish about a month ago on tour here in Oz. They had the new singer too - such a cutey!

Different voice to the former singer but I preferred that actually - played a lot off their latest album, Dark Passion Play which is brilliant.

The band were absolutely killer live. Very tight and far heavier than their recordings. And considering it was a small venue the mix was perfect too.

Gotta say the metal scene coming out from the Scandanavian countries keeps getting better and better. Now I just need Dimmu Borgir to tour and I will be happy.

Did they play much of their older stuff? I've been very interested to see how well it would turn out if Annette sings some of the older songs which Tarja previously sang, and how fans would react to that live aswell! I guess I'll find out on Tuesday. :)

I forgot to say before - I saw them back when they played at the Hammersmith Apollo back in 200...5? I think so, the ticket's upstairs anyway. It was my first gig and it was really good, we got pretty near the front :) (although I'm reeeeally short so I could hardly see anything, what with the masses of stupidly tall people taking up space XD Didn't matter though - seeing Ghost Love Score live... <3)

They actually played a lot of stuff off the new album ... a few classics of course but yes Annette has a very different voice but it came off well.

As I said they sounded far heavier live - given it was a small venue too. But they still ruled.

Would definitely recommend going to see them.

as to you being worried about the crowd, as long as you dont go in the mosh pits, youll be fine, gothic metal crowds tend to be a bit less rowdy (generally tend to be an older audience, if your worried about crowds, dont go see anything emo or pop-punk :p)

I agree with you !! Pain is very good in live !! Saturday or sunday I don't remember .. in portugal Pain are play with nigthwish for Wish I had an angel !! I have seen in youtube and it's very well !!!

I've gone off a lot of Nightwish's songs - they used to be one of my favourite bands and aren't so much any more - but I still absolutely love Sleeping Sun. Such a beautiful song.

Same here. Not really sure why either. Think it was mainly due to Tarja leaving though

New single soon. Next album will be accompanied with a movie (directed by the guy who did The Islander video)

I used to like Nightwish very much. Tarja was creat. Anette is too popish, if you ask me. So it has lost it's magic :(

This..I used to listen to them all the time when I was little, but not anymore because of Anette D:

I don't disagree but Dark Passion Play is one hell of an album.

Imaginarum looks SO good. Found the preview on Youtube a couple of months ago, and have been obsessed.

I think it's Emppu still trying to vindicate himself and show that it's the band and not Tarjen that made Nightwish and thus going completely over board with the albums.

Bit...bland, but hey, so was Amaranth.

I like the universe in this video, but not really fond of this new song, but I was thinking the same after listening Amaranth the first time, Dark Passion Play isn't my favorite album but I appreciate il now, especially The Islander, The Poet and The Pendulum or Sahara. I'm not sure if I'm going to see them live, I've got a paper when I went to a gig last month so I can't ignore the fact that their playing next year near home (well 1h30 drive) so tempting but I guess I'm just gonna wait, listen this new album and take the decision later

This new song just sounds like it could have been on the last album. It's quite nice though, and I do like it. I am more looking forward to the trancey, heavier song/songs though.

Well that's a disappointment. I mean, the album has been produced beautifully and the sound is great. But I love Nightwish for the great concepts they put into their songs and that's just completely absent in Imaegenrium.

EDIT:

After another few listens. It remains frustrating. It has beautiful folk/celtic/prog instrumentals but at the same time it's all coated in a terrible disney sauce.
