View Full Version : PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Breast Milk
Moriah

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

As soon as i read the Title i thought "What the fuck are PETA crying about now?".
Always thought that PETA was like the american version of Bono - apart from i don't think Bono kills african children if he thinks they're not gonna live a happy life anyway.

It is really odd that we are constantly raping cow's udders, but there's no way that the milk that comes from the human's ones is acceptable.
I must admit it sounds weird, but if it tasted good anyways, I wouldn't probably care. Besides, just think about how easy money making women would get from this! Well, if they got the milk out of their breasts that is.
Wonder what differences do cows' and humans' milk have? As far as I know, we shouldn't be drinking milk anyways, because it's purpose has always been to feed the newborn.

exploitation!

Wait, no, exploitation is the argument used pro-breast consumption. Humans have a choice in it, animals don't.
Breast milk is even healthier (provided the woman had a proper diet), much more omega 3.

Breast milk would make more sense than milk from cows when you think about it? A lot of countries are still lactose intolerant which is how it's suppose to be, we're not suppose to drink any kind of milk past the age 3-4 but we've trained ourselves to do it.
Saw a women on the telly try breast milk the other day and apparently it's very sweet, some women sell their breast milk and others give it away to hospitals so you never know :D
I read something a few weeks ago written by a woman who sells breast milk on the 'net to pervy old men and makes quite a lot of money out of it. So surely this would be an easy way to make money for some women?
I don't know wtf men were wanting the breast milk for by the way.
Also PETA need to stop failing because as soon as you say you're for animal rights everyone assumes you're one of these morons.

I think their idea is to set the extreme to shift the average further in the right way. And you know what? I like it, it's just that they totally miss the subtlety and the connection with the main public. It's the same with the climate lobby. Everyone is getting fucking tired of the climate "hype" while it's not supposed to be a hype to begin with, it's dead serious and all they do is manage to make people grow weary of it all.
Apparently some men actually like suckling their pregnant wives/girlfriends. I know it's a mother/son relationship but the Little Britain "bitty" sketch didn't come out of nowhere.

I think it's the fact that it's PETA. If someone else had proposed this, the reaction wouldn't be as strong.
I'm still confused as to why breast milk was proposed over soy milk, though. So to me that kinda casts this in the light of being more of an attention grab than a serious proposal...

It's made for infants to drink. There's no logical reason for grown people to do it, as they get almost none of the essential benefits that infants get from it.

They euthanize most of the shelter and abandoned animals they take in, which to me seems REALLY REALLY DUMB.
"Oh, better to euthanize them after suffering in a shelter or being abused than to hold on to them and let them suffer."
Er, so then you're suggesting that your facilities would cause suffering as well.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
It's that whole "If you can't have it all, you can't have any of it" attitude that I don't like.
Make an effort. Euthanize the ones that really have no chance at surviving, yeah. But you have a multimillion dollar budget, and only a few hundred thousand gets spent on caring for abused shelter animals. Something in that logic is flawed.
I swear the squick about breast milk is yet another example of moronishness over the intended purpose for breasts. Ie. denial over their true function.

I've talked on more than one occasion about my feelings for the backwards organization that is PETA. I wont angrily repeat myself in this thread to spare those who remember but lets just say I have a issue with them that hits close to home (which has been resolved much to my pleasure, but Im still pissed). Basically every whacked idea they come up with pisses me off. A lot of what they do is logically flawed. If people want to be vegetarians, thats cool, if people dont want to eat anything from an animal, it gets me slightly riled up, but that still cool too, as long as they're not infringing on MY right to do the opposite, which PETA seems to be intent on doing.
As a meat eater I'm obviously cool with people eating/using animals for our purposes but my only wish is that the animals suffer as little as possible when it comes to dying and that they have a good life before they're killed.
PETA euthanasing animals that come into their care for no good reason is NOT a way of ensuring animals don't suffer. Plus they're batshit insane and try to guilt trip even animal lovers by saying we shouldn't have animals as pets. Wtf.

Exactly. Im all for animal rights. I only buy Free Range and organic products. If I find a company harms its animals in a cruel way I wont buy their stuff but Im a human, an omnivore, and thats not going to change. And some crazy backwards organization sure as hell isn't going to make it change.
Not having animals as pets is total bull. There are certain animals that arent commonly domesticated I feel should be left alone but thats it. Im not going to throw my cats out because PETA says its wrong for me to let them live in a warm home and have food.
Plants are living things too! Maybe we should just stop eating all together!
I'll stop now because I could go on forever.

There's a region in Japan famous for its beef, which as well as tasting amazing is known for how well they treat the cows (massage, beer, and more!). It's also very expensive for that reason, but it's undoubtedly some of the best-treated (in life) food available.

Fighting for animal rights is one thing, doing bunch of stupid stuff and being controversial for the sake of it is another.
Also they're downright hypocrites. They want to ban all animal testing, even for medical reasons, AND the drugs that have already been developed by animal testing. This would include most antibiotics and insulin, but the vice president of PETA is a diabetic and uses insulin every day. They also have protests against animal shelters because they put down the animals that are too ill etc, but they do the exact thing themselves -try to save animals but put down the ones that they can't cure.

Peta also forgot that these 'milk mothers' will have to eat more meat (and drink more milk?) to make up for their lost milk.
In any case, it's even one more step down to making the whole process even more inefficient. First we burn down rainforests so we can farm crops which we can feed cows so we can drink the milk, yeah, let's just add a milk giving woman at the end of the chain to make it even longer and more wasteful.

Plus, it was mentioned earlier that women's milk is good WHEN THEY ARE ON A GOOD DIET. Um...so basically we would have to keep the "suppliers" in barns and very well fed.
Now I'm sure you'd get some willing participants. But, probably not nearly enough. Then what? You capture the rest. Or hell, you could just get some women and create a little baby factory. Make more babies...to produce more milk.
Then you raise the children in the factory. Keep the males so that they might impregnate the females (only the "fertile" ones, though), so that more milk will be made. And it goes on and on.
And right there you have the outline for a sci-fi story.
Yeah...

Surely the only reason cows produce milk is cos they're pregnant or have a baby (which was probably slaughtered)?
Cows used to only produce milk when they had a baby... But then the way humans have bred cows has ended up with cows that produce milk all the time after their first baby... If you don't milk them their udders will burst :(

No, it doesn't. Teas that taste well with milk are already so bad that there's nothing to ruin about. That's like saying you tomato ketchup ruins the big macs.
Not really. Ketchup ruins everything.

No, it's actually not. Cows produce milk when they are pregnant and after they are pregnant. I wouldn't call that a particularly horrible condition if they are taken care of well [ie not cramped in a nasty farmhouse and fed hormones]... The milk they produce is used for many things, obviously just for drinking and other reasons. They're quite useful... Also, they have to be milked or their udders get too full which, I believe, is painful for them.
So, no, it's not bullshit.
Are you not condoning the use of milk?

I LOVE spicy food. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Mmmm curry.
But mustard, for some reason, is just... horrifying. It's not so much the spice as the mustardy taste. If you add any more spice to that shit smear, it would be too overwhelming for me. Errgh. The foods people eat with mustard taste just fine without it. It ruins them, as would any other condiment.

To be fair, you're from Chicago and so have American mustard which is diarrhea.

I've always harbored a grudge against condiments, ever since I was tiny.
My parents assumed that I wouldn't like veggies, so they gave them to me with ranch on them, like other parents did in order to trick their kids into eating veggies. But I HATED it... because of the ranch. Later on, when I had plain veggies, I loved them.
I can tolerate ranch on a sandwich now. But that's as far as I'll go.
Mayo is FOUL. UGHHGHHHHGHGHhhh every time I tried to eat it, I gagged. Once I puked.
