They're now definitely my favourite band. I was bored the other day and wondered how cool it would be if WS and Muse were asked to bring back MTV Unplugged. Those would be 2 great shows.

The new album is fucking ace, I love the sounds of the first 2 albums making an appearance.

Martyr for My Love For You is in my head right now.

USB drive contains the album (Icky Thump)!
This is a great idea for Jack, who's against free downloading music.
People who has mp3s would even consider buying it, because it's cute, and only produced 3,333 each.

Anyway, I'm posting a part from a Toronto newspaper.
http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/229852

"I think we took for granted everything we do at home," said Daniel Glick, the young Montreal concert promoter overseeing tonight's Iqaluit gig on behalf of Gillette Entertainment Group.

"We didn't realize the intricacies involved."

Those intricacies included flying an entire road crew in from Vancouver over the weekend to begin assembling a stage and erecting a PA system in the venue, a former hockey rink that has fallen into disuse since the southern end of its floor sank a metre or so into the ground a few years ago.

They embarked on an 18-concert cross-Canada tour last weekend in British Columbia that will take them to every province and territory. Jack White admits it doesn't make sense and won't make much money, but says it's a dream trip rooted in childhood fantasies about the Great White North.

http://www.thestar.com/images/assets/243733_3.JPG
Musicians Jack and Meg White perform an impromptu concert in Whitehorse on Monday. The show was announced an hour before by word of mouth.

More cool news: they did a secret show on a bus.

"On July 2, 2007, a small group of dedicated White Stripes fans got an excellent surprise. A message was left on a message board that said: "Please meet us at the southeast corner of Water Avenue and Waterfront Drive (near the Provencher Bridge) at 3:10pm SHARP. Further instructions will be delivered there".

Around 100 people arrived 10 minutes after the message was posted. Only a few (Including myself and Free Press Photographer, David Lipnowski) made it onto a Winnipeg Transit bus where they were soon joined by Jack and Meg White. They played wheels on the bus, and Hotel Yorba for these incredibly lucky fans. They left the bus after the two songs, and thanked the fans. They hopped into a white van and headed on down to the Provencher bridge.

David and I ran from portage and main, to the forks and arrived in time to hear them play We're gonna be friends. Jack then had a jam session with one lucky busker."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6IDIcCkhxo

Canadian: They are in town today. Checking their boards, yet? *over-excited*

[edit]Secret show: I collected info from The Little Room and a fan is saying it will likely be near the venue. So Torontonian fans now are gathering near the site, checking the The Little Room every minute. Argh, I can't get there in 15 min ... :(

While I was being busy at work, this has been posted in The Little Room.

Secret Live has been done at a YMCA (Yonge x Wellsley -- sorry I know this has nothing to do with most people on this thread, but let me post this since there is someone. ;)

Posts from The Little Room:

"here is the update i just got ~ source can tweak it if i got anything wrong ~ lol.
he was inside the YMCA ~
quickie rundown of songs in no particular order

canon
sugar never tasted so good
apple blossom
martyr
yorba

also ~ had kids sing a few songs ( i can fly r.kelly?)
wheels on the bus. "

"My younger brother hightailed it up there from Queen & John and got there just in time to hear the last song ("Hotel Yorba"). He said that the doors were open to the street, and that the room had maybe fifty people or so in it...mostly kids that looked like they were campers. Sounds like this one wasn't quite as 'open to whoever can make it in time' as the others, but it also sounds like it was a REALLY sweet thing to do for the kids."

---------------
Apparently people got there after reading the call, but YMCA told them "members only, please" so most people stood outside of the locked door. Weird.

Official James Bond Quantum Of Solace theme - Jack White & Alicia Keys

Personally I think the music is really good, but the vocals sound cluttered making it sound a bit dull. As much as I like Jack's voice it would definately have been better for the song to have just used Alicia's vocals as they just seem to better suit a James Bond theme feel.

I just got home from a premiere screening of The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights (http://www.tiff.net/filmsandschedules/films/whitestripesundergre), a documentary on the Canadian tour of The White Stripes in 2007.
Jack and Meg showed up and spoke a little for the opening, sat through the film. It was great to see them both together! And the film was interesting, seeing them touring up, up North like Nunavut (arctic), meeting people. Lots of beautiful shots as well as interviews and live footage. I felt once again, The White Stripes brings the best out of Jack than any other of his bands.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/Bellamy_button/09-19-09-whitestripes.jpg

Good news.
Jack and Meg attended the press conference for the film early in the day, and Jack said he hopes to make another White Stripes album soon, and that he and Meg have been talking about working on some new songs.
"We worked on a couple recently, a few months ago, and we'll hopefully work on some more when I get a few moments," he said.

Yes I agree The Dead Weather are brilliant but it's been almost 3 years since a new White Stripes album, I'm sure his side projects could be put aside for a bit (hence side project!) It shouldn't be dominating over his main band which doesn't really seem to be much of a priority anymore.

If Jack did a solo album, I would hope his style would be more like the White Stripes then anything. The Raconteurs, in my opinion, were the worst of his three bands. I only really like the Dead Weather because they are more abstract.

I do hope very much that him and Meg get back together and make another album. I would be very pleased, as the White Stripes were my introduction the rock world, and I am very faithful to them.

Even then they are hit and miss: it can range from the rather excellent The Raconteurs to over-producing a Wanda Jackson record.

Sad news though. Elephant was a vital record in terms of getting me into alternative rock/indie rock/whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-it rock and it's a treasured piece in my record collection.

Yeah I don't like everything he's done since the white stripes, but some stuff is good. The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs are pretty awesome - I was just saying it's good that he's still in heaps of other bands then if neither of them had any involvement in music at all anymore.
In some ways its good that they decided to split up now before releasing an album just for the sake of it or something. They have a great bunch of albums to be remembered by

I was pretty sure they were gonna break up sooner or later, once Under Great Northern Lights was released it kinda seemed like it was meant to be shown as the last thing they would do.

I'm not too upset about this because I saw it coming.

I just hope Jack decides to do some proper blues and put it on a CD. Still won't be the same without Meg's drumming, though. People say she's rubbish. I say they listen to the band properly and tell me what drum line isn't spot on, superbly delivered, enthralling.

I'm glad they quit when they did. White Blood Cells and Elephant were quite good for what they were worth, but when The Stripes exploded and became this massively hyped thing they lost a lot of their appeal to me. Get Behind Me Satan was utter rubbish. Icky Thump was better but still not touching the quality of their earlier works. I don't like Dead Weather at all and The Raconteurs were just OK... I could tell another White Stripes album at this point wouldn't be particularly worthwhile.

Anyway, the split has helped me realise. If you listen to their early works and only think of them as a fun little blues rock duo then it's really enjoyable stuff. If you listen to their later works it only comes across as pretencious and unappealing. The White Stripes have well and truly accomplished whatever it is they wanted to accomplish by now. This is a fitting end. I'm just amazed it didn't happen sooner.

Article my friend's brother wrote about the first time he saw the White Stripes in 2001, posted it as a note on facebook about a week ago and just showed up in The Daily Oklahoman (a newspaper) today. Feel free to read and enjoy it, though i'm not really interested in criticism because I didn't write it. ;) In September of 2001 I stood outside what is now known as the Conservatory but was then known as the Green Door on Western Avenue in Oklahoma City with Chris Kramer and Tee Milla waiting to see a band called The White Stripes. Previous to that night, I hadn't heard a single note of a single song.
Because the next coolest thing to actual cool things was waiting for cool things, we were five hours early and thus the only people there. The sun was still out.
This was about a month before “Fell in Love With a Girl” and a full year before they were a worldwide rock 'n' roll-savior-ing phenomenon. In fact, the only thing we could claim to know about the band came from a paragraph-long blurb in that month's Rolling Stone: brother and sister, red and white, guitar and drums, the blues. Weird mysterious rock 'n' roll. “Cool. Let's grab burgers after class and sit on a sidewalk the whole afternoon for that.”
After an hour or two, Jack White appeared before us. Red slacks, white T-shirt — in character. He lit a cigarette, nodded to us. Direct exposure to his cool froze us in silent awe. He peered inside the furniture store next door that would later become Size Records, and we just sat there.
“Here for the show tonight?”
We said yes, noting we wanted to make sure we got tickets. Jack seemed amused by this notion. He smiled.
“Cool. See you guys in there.”
Our line had grown to about 12 by the time they let us inside. The sign said “8 Bones,” so we paid for our hand stamps, bought sodas at the bar and went to the middle of the floor for more waiting.
Three sloppy opening acts later, and it was 11 p.m. There were now about 30 people scattered about, but not enough to feel like anyone else was there. We were starting to get restless and tired — our feet sore, our sodas barely sustaining us.
Tee Milla hit the road. “Let me know how it is.” It was getting late, the openers weren't great, and we couldn't really blame him.
But our anticipation grew during the setup: two mics, one facing the audience, one '50s vintage next to the drum set with a distortion pedal.
The candy cane kick drum. The Red JB Hutto Montgomery Airline guitar.
Suddenly, Meg sat down behind her drums. She looked listlessly to the ceiling and began stomping her kick pedal. Just thud thud thud, and nothing else. It seemed like she was barely paying attention to what she was doing. Pouting petulance like she was throwing a temper-tantrum.
Then she started snapping her snare in time with the bass and focused her attention offstage.
We turned to see what she was looking at — Jack White sitting at the bar, finishing his drink.
It was at that moment when I got the first tingle of a notion that I was about to watch the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life unfold right in front of me.
Jack tilted his head back, swallowed the drink and leapt off his barstool in the sort of haphazard way that makes parents yell at their children. He ran to the stage and jumped up over its front edge from the floor. His back to the audience, he slipped on the Airline, spun around to face us and time stopped, the universe melted away and I had to stop myself from falling over backward.
Meg's drums cut on a dime and Jack tore into the opening riff of “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” like a madman. Rock writers have spent the past decade inventing new hyperbolic ways of describing Jack White's god-level guitar-murdering, so there's little need to add to the pile. Needless to say, I could barely process it. I was floating.
A religious experience high I'd never felt before. I remember the sensory hallucination of a cool breeze. I was losing my mind.
The White Stripes made rock 'n' roll new and amazing, and in that moment, it felt like it was just for me. An hour passed by in a second, and when it was over, the world was a bigger place. Nothing felt the same.
We mustered the courage to approach him after the show. He thanked us for coming, signed our CDs and gave us buttons. Then we drove 20 minutes back to Edmond.
I'll never again have rock 'n' roll heroes like I had The White Stripes.
And as many shows as I see, nothing could possibly top that night.
In their statement announcing the end of the band, The White Stripes wrote:
“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”
Long story short: That's why I'm spinning “Death Letter” so loud and over and over.

Why get a proper drummer when The White Stripes were mostly influenced and cover solo Mississippi Bluesmen who only ever used a kick drum doing straight 4/4 at most?

Yet again missing the entire point.

I never said I didn't or at the very least I try my best to. Just because I've not heard every song by every band ever and know everything about every band ever doesn't give any less credit to the point I'm making.

The White Stripes covers a fair number of songs by Blues musicians, it's not hard to go and listen to the originals, the sound of the band is Garage Blues, it's not hard to go and find 60's Garage bands and up to the present day. It's only your lack of interest preventing you from finding this stuff.

And that's a cover of a song by The Sonics, also worth checking out as they were a big influence on Nirvana (Who also covered Black Girl by Leadbelly, although renamed it "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"), with Kirk Cobain stating they had the best drum sound ever.

Both The Swamp Rats & The Sonics did versions of Louie Louie (The Kingsmen, The Kinks), which was covered by a number of bands, which you into the 60's British Invasion and Reggae/Ska (Toots & The Maytals)

If you're not interested enough in the band to know something as obvious as The White Stripes' blues influences, why bother to comment on the band? :erm:

I knew the blues influence, who said I didn't. I didn't know the extent went as far as the drumline, because it certainly doesn't resemble any blues track I've heard.

I can see where you're coming from but Matt's just playing the Grand Omega Bosses riff from the middle section of Assassin. I doubt he was thinking of TWS when he was playing/wrote it.

I didn't mean that :p

I think both Bellamy and White had in mind Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G Minor when writing the songs.

Ah, I didn't know Jack was into the sort of thing (I'm new to the band). If so, it'd make perfect sense then I guess.

I'm not sure if White has ever listened to Rachmaninoff (even though I assume he had), but to my ears the influence is almost obvious.

Just personal thoughts, though

I think The White Stripes have become my new favourite band - shame I'm only just getting into them now though. I hope they do a reunion at some point so I can see them live.

I'd like to see Jack and Meg on stage together, but they confirmed they were done with recording and performing together last year at some point.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/12351234

But Jack is touring right now and he has been playing a good amount of WS (Dead Leaves On The Dirty Ground, Ball and a Biscuit, Seven Nation Army, I just Don't Know What to Do With Myself) plus a little Raconteurs and Dead Weather.. Should be an awesome show, and I'm going TOMORROW! :D

True, but I wouldn't just want to see TWS for the songs - it'd be for the energy that would come from Jack which I don't know if he would have if he was by himself.

However, I would like to go see him - any UK dates and ticket prices?

I think there may be one or two UK dates not sure about the prices, got mine for about 35 USD though.

He hasn't been playing solo though, he has (I'm pretty sure) two backing bands, so I'm sure he will be up there doin his thing. I read he has been switching off between an all male and all female backing band..? not sure of the significance but that is definitely what he did on his SNL performances if you wanna check em out on youtube.

Just got done listening to it. Fantastic album, can't wait to buy it and see him live :awesome: Tickets are going pretty cheap aren't they?

If I were to think of any flaws I'd say that maybe the second half/last third starts to get a bit slow but it's really not that bad.
