View Full Version : Best Live Performance of any one song
We Want The Cup

Personally best MK performance was at Casino de Paris... So much energy and one of the only time I think when they had extra riff after the song
nice :)
Thanks for that. It was such an amazing night  I can't wait to see Liam's DVD.
It was! One of the highlights for me will always be the whole room doing the 'Morgan' chant with Dom drumming the beat to it!

Isn't that what I said?
Er, I'm not talking about long-term effects, but more immediate effects (say ~30 seconds of difficult notes). Though it will take a lot longer than that to cause any serious damage to your voice.
How are you so knowledgeable on this subject?
Research, I've been studying the voice for a few years now. Want to become a teacher. :)

Haha... and him saying 'I'm gonna fuck this up' before the first performance of NSC. So many great memories of this gig.

I'd say Rock In Rio was better. Opening song, with fireworks, played slightly faster (at least I think so) and with an ending riff as well. Btw, there have been extra riffs more times, namely Stade de France and Wembley.

Hmm, yes. What I am saying is that while Starlight doesn't really have any notes on the top of his register, they are still straining on his voice. And not just one note in the song, but a big part of it. And then I simply said that while Matt is definitely able to perform this, it will damage his voice. And ofc it wouldn't have been such a big deal if he was just performing it on rare occasions, even if the damage is immediate.
Just another off-topic subject when we're at it, how good of a singer are you yourself? :p

At the end of the day it's all down to personal taste... MK was the opening song as well at Casino de Paris but as they say to each their own.
Tbh I can't remember any extra riff at SDF, all I can remember is the standard song but with the mic cutting out at the beginning of the 1st verse.

MK Ultra was probably my second favorite song on the album after Uprising. But I have yet to hear a live version that I like. I don't know what it is but that song doesn't seem to work live for me. At least not the way they're doing it. Can't put my finger on it. Love the song though.

Ya it's just one of my weird tastes that I can't explain myself. I have the same issue with USoE. Great on the album, not so much live. But I don't think I'm completely alone on that one.

I agree, KoC is much better live than on the album. I still like the album but that song has a lot more energy on the stage. Same with New Born, Bliss, and Butterflies and Hurricanes. Although New Born's been a little lazy lately.

Stockholm Syndrome + Riffapalooza (LA Staples Center Gig.)
Knights of Cydonia + A man with a harmonica (Glastonbury 2010)
Citizen Erased + Take a bow outro (Possibly Glastonbury 2004)

aren't the performances from that gig playback? was watching hysteria at live 8, and matt's playing doesn't match up with the sound at all sometimes--the riff right before the solo, for example. would make sense out of why the guitar didn't sound farked up at all even though he twipped

I don't think so, it was probably just lag on the video uploaders' part. I'm pretty sure Bliss wasn't, it was different in a multitude of ways to the album version, it even had the falsetto :awesome: But I'll have a look at Hysteria.

looked at 'em again, and it seems like some of the videos have another audio layer on top
this one, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYSIorcOU8k
1. at the beginning, it sounds like he's scraping down from the top of the neck--definitely not what matt's playing.
2. notice where his hand's at at 2:30--definitely not the riff you hear
3. you can hear a second guitar doing a bend at 2:36--probably what matt's actually playing.
then there's this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8Ja3F57wfg. sounds like everything's right in that one. and the falsetto he does for bliss in it isn't the same as the other videos of bliss from live 8, including the clip in takeabow19's bliss falsetto compilation  it's still good, though  edit: nvm, actually watched the video and some parts like 5:04 look off. maybe the audio quality :noey:

I don't know, one of them just seems to be edited. Perhaps the people doing the TV broadcast overdubbed parts of the performance or something. I expect that Muse were actually playing live.

Haven't heard of that. Tbh I think they still use as much, just Morgan flicks them on and off.
Never noticed that Live 8 footage though! Was quite surprised. I imagine Bellamy was going a bit crazy with his performance, but for the DVD they wanted a 'proper' performance like the studio version so put a guitar recording from a previous performance over the top

I think one of the oldies mentioned it in another thread. It was basically things like, instead of Chris playing the TIRO bassline properly, he'd just play the clean part while they used the distorted stuff from the album as backing etc. And yeah, that's what I thought about the Live 8 stuff too.

Well, what happens a lot with broadcasted performances is that they're edited after it's been aired, and this may have been the case here, especially with the two different versions of Bliss from the same show that that version of Hysteria was played.

I hadn't seen it either! One of the few TIRO performances that comes across as awesome live. Everything about the vocals in that was great
I think my main problem with it live is the guitar doesn't sound beefy enough. Like maybe he should just do power chords in the chorus, and then in the second verse which sounds massive on the album, doesn't quite do that for me live...

I'm probably talking shit here, but if they transposed it down to Drop D (if you even can change it to that) or even Drop C then I think it would sound better live, and Matt probably wouldn't find it so hard to sing, he seems to have been struggling lately. But yeah I agree, the guitar has never sounded as beefy live as it does on the album. Although, I think there were at least three guitars in the album recording, which explains a lot.

Now that you mention Blackout at HAARP, I remember being there both nights and I probably didn't even appreciate the music as much as I should have as I was distracted by the acrobats and the confetti. It was nice but you focussed a bit less on the beauty of the song itself.

Stuff I do remember:
Saying Supermassive would open
KoC opening
Recording B&H on my phone
Suddenly realising they were playing Invincible after that intro
Starlight
TIRO (was my favourite song at that time)
Those Blackout balloons (didn't realise what song it was)
Bliss (I remembered as the song I had seen on Kerrang a few times)
PiB...I remember it made the stadium shake
Take a Bow

This destroys any MK Ultra out there.. The OoS style scream alone at 2:23 is just worth it.

Wembley 10's Bliss was the best I've ever heard, last night's was good, but not the best, and the synth intro isn't as good.
Can't decide whether Hypermusic was better than that 2002 Montreoux one. Matt's voice is so much better now, but the performance didn't have the same rawness and aggression.
Megalomania was certainly up with the best versions of that, as was Space Dementia, and for what it's worth Screenager.
Starlight felt really beefy last night aswell.

 I've always thought it was kind of a shame that so few gigs are pro-shot. There are probably some hidden gems out there (example: SS at Lolla was definitely not a contender for best EVER, but from what I'd seen on YouTube of some of last year's gigs, it was better than it had sounded in a while, and I thought it was a shame that more people couldn't have heard it... Well Reading 2011 seems to have claimed a few greatest performances
Space Dementia (because of how huge the guitar outro sounded)
Hyper Music (very beefy, sounded a lot cleaner than earlier versions yet retained the heavyness, and Chris singing)

and of course Dark Shines.

I actually really enjoy how Knights has transformed over the years. I think the power it gives off during the Resistance Tour has been much stronger than the BH&R (from video only though...). Yet with that said the V performance is the one that stands out above others for me, regardless of tour. Fuji Rock was also brilliant though.

Thinking about it, RBS was brought back after thought to be dead for a while. So there's always the chance of seeing some of the rarer Absolution songs make a comeback. Depends on the theme and style of the new album. A dropped BH&R song might come back too.
The song will come back, then it'll get played somewhat often at the big gigs that 90% of boardies go to, then everyone will forget it was a rarity and not count it anymore.

I'm probably one of the few people that wants Invincible to return.

The outro is great but I find that they do a lot of outros to SS that sound like that now-a-days. That and the actual song itself just seems...average by their standards :erm: but meh, it's your opinion, like you said.
Earls Court for the main song, Glastonbury for the outro - for me.

I guess it's personal preference, but I really don't like that exaggerated "deep" vocal tone that Matt gave the song. It was also dropped 1/2 step for the gigs from the original.

He messed up the lyrics at Reading but I'd still say that Reading still had a teensy bit of an edge over Leeds sound-wise.

You mean besides being the best Bliss performance overall? If you're just measuring it in falsetto, then no, it was not the best performance. It's the overall performance of it on that night. The band were on fire that night and there was just lots of energy mixed in with one of the best falsettos of the TR tour (it was topped by Take A Bow later that night), as well as the fantastic atmosphere of the gig.
