They're great. Of course they deserve this topic.

Saw them live once at a Belgian festival and I was very pleased to see how kind they are and how good they sound like live!

Pounding and the other single released around the same time were cool, but I seem to remember thinking the album was a bit weird when my brother played it.

There is no "the" in their name.

Annette

There is no "the" in their name.
not saying The is part of the band names.....comingtoosoon prolly meant Doves..but because your talking about them its the...
example...
if muse was called Muses, people would also say The muses automatically..lets appreciate the muses..
never mind..im tired.

Sarah

I didn't name the band but they are called Doves. You will listen to Doves or watch Doves. You aren't going to see The Doves because that may be an entirely different band.

Annette

read.....carefully...what i said..
i know they arent called THE doves...but thats how people speak. saying 'appreciates doves' is saying like 'i sit on couch' for your IDEA..although it is correct when you say "im going to see Doves"
it just doesnt talk right..

Im siding with Doves... he/she appreciates Doves, is perfectly good speak, me thinks

I went to see Doves.. not the Doves..
I went to see Oasis.. not The Oasis
I went to see Muse.. not The Muse

i didnt buy The muses new album.. and I dont listen to The Doves..
Doves, however, are one of the best bands around at the moment..
( i only say this cos my brother is Doves biggest fan, and i get picked up on it all the time.. :( )

I've got "Lost Souls", but I haven't got "The Last Broadcast" (although I have heard the whole album on a few occasions)

"Pounding", "Words" & "There Goes The Fear" are quality! :)

BTW - have Doves got a new album coming out this year?
I went on their site a while back and they were apparently recording new stuff ??? ....

Paul

I think I prefer Lost Souls to the Last Broadcast.

And who cares about whether you say it with "The" in it or not? Technically (the) Spice Girls had no "the", but everyone used to say it anyway.

Did anyone else know they used to be some sort of pop/dance group until they lost all their equipment (or something like that)?

yeah. they used to be Sub Sub. "aint no love, aint no use" and all that..

their home studio burnt down, and they wernt insured, so they could only afford to buy " proper" instuments. the rest is history. they are one of the best bands on the planet..

I love Doves.

I saw them in Manchester not long ago, and when I go to Boon Army *see icon*, the DJ Clint Boon ALWAYS played Pounding last, what an anthem.

Oh and on the 'the' theme...IIRC, Stones Roses were "Stone Roses" not "The Stone Roses" but everyones says the 'the' anyway.

Has anyone noticed that there are two different versions of their current video for the single "Black & White Town". I saw the video for the first time, at about 1 am on MTV, & I thought it was a great video. About a town inhabited by wankers & lesbians. Great. & then I saw another version at about 3.20 pm today, right after Daria, on MTV2. It had the exact same stuff in it, really. There was nothing really contriversial about the late one that wasn't in this one, but the places they kiss are different & they've added in a boy with mascara. Strange.

The fact that all their songs sound the same and they have noooooooooooooo talent what so ever doesn't do them any favours either.

I've heard someone say that about the Arcade Fire & even the go! team, so i really do not take that comment seriously anymore. Most songs sound the same if you've only heard them once, and you've judged on their first mistake. I really hate when people state that all of a bands songs sound the same, because they're not only insulting the band (usually with a guess of an opinion), but they're stating that they're above all of that bands fans because the fans can't hear what they hear.. Obviously fans of the band won't like a band if all of their songs are the same.

All 3 of their albums do not let down. Good band. Not the greatest ever, just a decent band. They've got talent, anyway

tjej
25-06-2005, 12:02 AM
Having seen them live and listened to their albums many a time, it's not a rash, uneducated comment.

I'm not stating that I'm above anyone. I just think they're incredibly bland and lack adventure.

Went to the gig last night in Hammersmith. Good gig overall. Best quote of the evening:

"It's just not a proper Doves gig without a technical problem" - Jez

The film during the small interval was quite amusing, lighting and visuals were fantastic from where I was (standing under the balcony). The Cedar Room, There Goes The Fear, Snowden, Sea Song and Black And White Town were the best songs on the night and most memorable moment while probably be the crowd chanting the Last Broadcast melody whilst a technical hitch was being sorted out. Legendary.

Here was the setlist if people are interested:

Snowden
Sky Starts Falling
Where We're Calling From
Pounding
Almost Forgot Myself
Sea Song
Eleven Miles Out
Black And White Town
The Storm
Last Broadcast (jamming/audience capella)
Rise
Ambition
Last Broadcast (real performance)
Caught By The River
One Of These Days
The Cedar Room
Here It Comes
M62 Song
There Goes The Fear

I adore this band more than I can put into words.

They were the first band I ever went to a gig 'properly' to see back in 2005 I believe! Kingdom of Rust is a kick ass song and the video for it is also brilliant. Jetstream is a great song too, I downloaded that song when they had it up for free on their website.

I love Doves such a mighty band, I have all their albums and some of their singles. I just wish I could get my hands on the 'Sub Sub' stuff. Haha one of their best songs in my opinion is Spaceface! Which is from that era I believe and is played live occasionally, even these days.

I cannot wait to hear the whole new album, I'm sure it's gonna be mega!

I have to say, Kingdom Of Rust is a really good album. Jetstream is a great intro to the album, I like the way some of their dance influences from the Sub-Sub days are creeping back into their music.

Kingdom Of Rust is merely a good record but not their best. I'm a bit disappointed really. :( After Jetstream and the title song I was expecting a brilliant record and the rest of the album just isn't up to the standard of those two tracks.

Rapidly becoming favourites of mine, very much in they way Radiohead did - it took me a fair few listens to really decypher the best parts of each song. Very rewarding when you do .

Even when describing a Doves album/gig, it would still be 'I saw Doves'

The radio DJ even called them The Doves after they played their song this morning. They're actually performing here tonight. I'm not too familliar with their stuff though so I don't want to go and look like a fool for not knowing any of their songs. :(

Sorry, couldn't resist . Coldplay are an English band and are probably the most popular, widely listened to band in the UK and probably one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment - the thought of anyone on here who hasn't heard of them amused me a tad .

Wish I'd seen this last night I'dve told you to go ..you would've had a treat  they are amazing live!

I actually now and again like going to see a band I know little or nothing about ..it's an interesting experience ...most times I've come away thinking ...'yeah I like them' or 'not bad' but there's been some occasions when I've left after 10 minutes thinking ..they were bloody awful
Of course you could say ..just listen to them or radio ,d/l whatever, but the true test of a band's worth is in their live performances ..that's when the dog sees the rabbit so to speak ;)

And which clown compared them to Coldplay ...wash your ears out :p

Doves sound most similar to Elbow in my opinion.

The singer sounds remarkably similar.

I like both bands though. Not listened to Doves in aaaaaaages. I loved Black and White Town and a few of the earlier songs. I have the album Lost Souls lying around but I think I played it about once.

God fucking damit all to hell.

SO, I tried to get a ticket for their show at the troxy in london. Link went active at 8:58, snapped up a standing ticket, no problem. Filled in details, clicked buy.

"O hai, can has verify by visa plz? Can't remember password? No problemz! Re-register!"

Except that the box wouldn't load properly, so I couldn't verify the card. And ZAP! there goes my ticket. GodDAMN, I was/am so pissed off  :(

^ Awesome!
I love Doves, although I read recently in an NME article that they're going on a two-year hiatus at the end of this tour. I suppose that's better than saying "Indefinite hiatus", at any rate.

Yep, they're taking a two year break before doing anymore recording/touring. Seems fair enough, they've been nonstop for a while now! Glad I caught them when I did

Short notice, I know, but I have three tickets for their Eden Sesh tomorrow and tbh, could do with selling them if possible.

If anyone's interested, let me know asap. I won't ask for face value (£35) - £15-20 would be fine if you want them :).

Is this one of those 'record on the night, release as a download' thing. I really am not a fan of those kind of things purely because it feels like a really cynical opportunity to make a quick buck.

yeah limited edition and all that.
I like live DVDs, but I must admit I find live audios of gigs pretty dull, after the first listen (or even in some cases before I get to the end of the first listen;) I very rarely if ever listen to the again, it's usually listen then delete!
