my mate's porl thompson's niece and he's going to go round her's for dinner today :) and he's somehow related to rob too. i can't remember.

but i find it amusing how agent smith tells neo that they are the cure in the matrix :)

i have only heard a few of their songs but i want to find out more because they're like the only band from crawley (where i live) so could somebody suggest their top ten songs?

Album wise, I'd definately get hold of Faith, Pornography, Head on the Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Disintegration.

It would also be a good idea for you to get hold of one of the greatest hits albums, as the Cure have covered a wide range of styles in their career.

I seriously love this band to death. I cannot imagine my life without them.
I cannot wait for their summer tour with Interpol and The Rapture.

As for Bobbert and Morrisey....
Rob just mentioned it in the new EW magazine. He doesnt like his music, Mozz started the feud, and hes never even met the guy.

My fav Cure tracks:
from the edge of the deep green sea
100 years
faith
short term effect
play for today
plainsong
homesick
end
I could list songs all night...

The Cure are playing at a concert/festival type thing right near me called the hfstival for a radio station. I would love to see them play but I will be vacationing and all of the other groups are like the offspring, modest mouse, new found glory, jay z, and bands I'd rather not know that the Cure are playing with. Seems so strange they'd be doing a show like that.

Heh. You're quite a muppet because To Sheila was never released by The Cure - it's a smashing pumpkins song. When you wrote A night like this, you must of went to smashing pumpkins in your head because they covered it and then thought of Boys crying because you're just a crazy sissy.

Stranger: "Oh dear, he's talking to himself again" :indiffere

Shush!

So, anyway, I bought their new album (with the bonus tracks and DVD  ) yesterday. It's good. I haven't been able to stop listening to it. It's definitely worth a buy for cure fans. The bonus tracks would be the ones that stand out on the album, though- they're my favourite tracks.

I'm seeing them this weekend in San Francisco and Sacramento.
These will conclude my Curiosa roadtrip...8 shows in one month.

devotionalee
26-08-2004, 02:49 AM
You are lucky; they change their setlist a lot from gig to gig, so you had 8 different concerts :D. Btw, I had to travel 8 hours on bus to see them, after MUSE :P

*hoping to see them again this year*

plastic passion
26-08-2004, 03:15 AM
You went on a bus? cooool.
We drove to half the shows and flew the other half.
I'll be paying for this trip long after they retire. :$
We flew out to Texas because we wanted to see more of muse and the cure...and well we all know how that ended.

The Cure won't be touring in the states on this album anymore. :'(
We'll have to wait another 4 years. Hopefully the rumors of another line up change isnt true.

devotionalee
26-08-2004, 03:26 AM
You are a real fan :D. My trip was a bit expensive for me too (including 3 days in that city). But muse & the cure deserved it. Were grrrrrrreat! I can't imagine this multiplied by 8 :).

I hope next alb in less than 4 years (u2, cure and dm are soooo lazy...)

Where did you see the festival?

Yeah true fan. The Cure has been my absolute favorite band since 1987. I couldnt think of a better way to put myself into debt than seeing them. ;)

As for DM, isnt Dave busy with his solo stuff?
I seen them once a few years ago.
U2 is touring soon right? I heard they wanted to take Snow Patrol out...?

devotionalee
26-08-2004, 09:53 AM
I saw them in Spain: Starsailor, MUSE, Lou Reed, the Cure :)

I listen to the Cure since Bloodflowers (only :p), and have become a little fan in these years.

About DM... Dave was busy until December; now they are writing and going to the studio soon.
I don't know anything about U2's tour :p

plastic passion
26-08-2004, 03:18 PM
I remember Robert talking about that festival and he was looking forward to watching muse and starsailor.

Lucky. I doubt we'll get it here in America. Bleh.
I seen the covers already though. I didn't care for Blink's cover of A Letter to Elise.
AFI did really good covering Just Like Heaven. Davey's voice sounded great.

Right. Cure fans, I need your help!

I'm quite new to the band, but I do have the Hits cd, and I've also managed to get some their newer stuff from the library, to give it a listen. But now I want to buy more, and I think I could start from the bit darker ones (as the hits album didn't quite cover that side of The Cure). So.

New album pushed back to May 2007, due to Robert's current case of writer's block. Touring starts in March so they better get things moving soon!

Festival 2005 - 2½ hr. DVD in stores now, filmed across last year's European Festival tour. Stellar renditions of The Blood, The Drowning Man, A Forest, Faith, and 26 others. Really shows off their new keyboard-less sound. Oh yeah and the return of Mr. Porl Thompson to the band. Can't lose there.

Some few good songs, but I hate Robert Smith with a passion for the following reasons:

- He is always badmouthing any artist or band who is more successful than his own.
- He criticizes any artist who who has pop oriented catchy radio hits, when he himself has written a couple of them including 'Friday I'm in Love'.
- It's hard to take an 80s goth seriously when he's fat, almost in his 50s and he's still wearing make-up.
- He appeared on the worst South Park episode ever.

dude, he's appeared on stage with acts from David Bowie to Blink 182, to Placebo, and has guested on countless bands' albums. Not to mention he personally hand-picked the entire Curiosa line-up. That doesn't sound like a very negative Nancy to me. Morrissey is probably the only person he's consistently had negative things to say about over the years, and that was most certainly a very mutual thing.

I think it's cool when celebrities appear on a cartoon shows as long as their apperance works along with the plot of the episode just like when Aerosmith and Red Hot Chili Peppers appeared on The Simpsons.

However, Robert Smith turning into a robot and beating the shit out of Barbara Streisand is the most pathetic idea anyone has come up with, and I hate Barbara Streisand.

He had an opinion, he shared it, good for him. He is pretty well known for being very vocal on his opinions. He has settled down in recent years though.

oh and on the make-up bit...imagine Elizabeth Taylor with no make-up on. Scary.
Seriously Robert needs to keep it on. But it is only for the stage.

Indeed. The Wish tour was amazing as they did such a range of stuff. I went to all four nights they did at Olympia in 1992 and those shows were just amazing. I'll always remember the brilliant lights during The Figurehead and how they just fit perfectly with the song.

I really didn't like Bloodflowers that much, and at the show I went to in 2000 they played loads of really long songs from that. Frankly I was bored, which I'd never been at a Cure show before. :(

Which 'best of' do you have because there are two- Galore which has their later stuff and Staring at the Sea which goes up to 1986? The latter is probably more consistent.

As for where to start, that rather depends on whether you like happy Cure or bleak Cure. You can't really go wrong with Disintegration (miseralby beautiful) or Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me which is pretty long, but has a bit of everything.

Really need to get a bit more of their back catalogue myself too, especially their earlier stuff.

Maybe before diving into individual albums the other two, potentially more comprehensive best ofs might be worth exploring, Staring at the Sea especially isn't a greatest hits and includes some early stuff from albums rather than just the singles.

Absolute class, and put so many modern bands to shame! Ive read that some people were disappointed with the Big Gig set list...apparently they wanted all the hits...well, I would say thats what they did, if you are a big Cure fan, then that set list was perfection!

I think the only Cure album that I'm missing is Wild Mood Swings.

As for albums to get, to give a good overview of everything I'd get Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me for a good mixture of styles, Disintegration for it's symphonic bleakness, and Head On the Door for awesome jangly pop type stuff. I also think that Three Imaginary Boys is worth getting, so you get their early stuff like the title track, Grinding Halt, 10:15 Saturday Night and Fire In Cairo.

If you are feeling the need for angry and dark then try Pornography (my favourite along with Head On the Door). Faith and 17 Seconds are pretty miserable in tone but each contain great stuff. The Top is a pretty hard album to get into, but it does contain the classic Shake Dog Shake.
Japanese Whispers contains the electronic pop stuff like The Walk and Let's Go To Bed, along with Lovecats.

Doing this has made me realise that I've failed to rip Wish to my computer.

Did you find all those albums boring or just the live one? Having had or listened to most Cure albums over the years I wouldn't say that you oughtn't get them, but live albums unless you're really quite a fan can be disappointing.

So wished I had been able to get to that gig:'( They were never going to please every last person in the audience, when you have a back catalogue the size of theirs there are always going to be things left out that you'd love them to have played; I've experienced that with bands who have only had a couple of albums, never mind 18 or whatever number it is now.

And yes, Fat Bob was quite a cutey in his day....recently saw the Lovecats video and felt a bit funny and was pleased to be sitting down at the time:$ Curious considering I never really have had a thing for him either...

Funny you say that about The Top as I have had the same experience with it and I thought prior to listening to it that this was going to be the Cure album for me for some reason. I used to have Wish and for reasons I really can't explain, I got rid of it. Can't imagine why as I liked it.

Yeah, that's a pretty poor album really :(
Like Black Cherry already said the combination of Staring At The Sea and Galore is a good stepping stone. That's how I started anyway.

I really love Bloodflowers for some reason. Everyone keeps saying it's a difficult album to get into but it was just setting the trend for other bands who are popular today like 65 Days Of Static and Explosions In The Sky. I'm not saying it's a post rock album but I see lots of similarities in how that album was conceived and how the albums of aforementioned bands sound.

Did you find all those albums boring or just the live one? Having had or listened to most Cure albums over the years I wouldn't say that you oughtn't get them, but live albums unless you're really quite a fan can be disappointing.

Just the live ones. They just aren't anything special I feel.

Glad someone brought this thread back up.
I watched snipits of the big gig and awards on youtube.
Simon Gallup is such a fox. Always.
Underneath the Stars is incredibly beautiful live so I can totally get the emotional thing.

I'm flying over to see them in Las Vegas next month. Quite fortunate I seen them 6 times last year and caught their secret club gig in LA. wow!!

top 10:
hungry ghost , from the edge of the deep green sea, cold, just like heaven, faith, going nowhere, high, open, primary, shake dog shake.
But this list changes everyday..

Or 3 1/2 like they did in Paris last year.

plainsong, prayers for rain, a strange day, alt.end, the walk, the end of the world, lovesong, to wish impossible things, pictures of you, lullaby, from the edge of the deep green sea, kyoto song, the only one, push, how beautiful you are..., friday i'm in love, inbetween days, just like heaven, primary, a boy i never knew, shake dog shake, never enough, wrong number, one hundred years, disintegration,
E1: at night, m, play for today, a forest,
E2: the lovecats, let's go to bed, freakshow, close to me, why can't i be you?,
E3: three imaginary boys, fire in cairo, boys don't cry, jumping someone else's train, grinding halt, 10:15 saturday night, killing an arab,
E4: faith

Such a great night! Robert wanted to continue playing, too.

2 1/2 to 3 hours is pretty standard for them these days, though. You'll get a sort of standard core set of songs with anywhere from 5-10 songs being rotated in and out. My advice would be to see more than one show. Heck, see more than 2. Go for 13 like I did during the 4tour!

A Cure thread!
I'm an Australian and the first time I payed attention to the Cure (despite growing up with my parents playing it) was NYE 2007, just AFTER they effing toured :(

Robert's music has an effect on me that no music EVER has - that includes Muse and Franz Ferdinand, my 2nd and equal 1st favourite bands. I feel like crying whenever I hear Inbetween Days or Close to Me, and this feeling of elation just flows through me

My favourite album would have to be HotD, then Pornography, Disintegration, Faith and KM KM KM. The Top is also psychedelically awesome and A Forest is my favourite song to play with my friends.

I just hope they come back to Aus soon - looking at those Mexican setlists before, I counted 36 or so songs on the first one! Value for money or what?

Did anyone here go to the Trilogy concerts? They would have been amazing :supersad:

My top ten would be
Lovecats
A Forest
Inbetween Days
The Blood
Disintegration
Pictures of You
Faith
The Figurehead
A Strange Day
Push

in no particular order

Halp? What should I listen to? I have their Greatest Hits on Spotify, but I need some advice!

I'd say to start with Pornography for the dark stuff, Head On the Door for the light stuff, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me for a good mixture of the two, and Disintegration for the epic scale.

Later on be sure to get Faith and Seventeen Seconds too, to complete the gloom trilogy with Pornography. Wish also is pretty good.

If you want their spiky early stuff like Killing An Arab then Three Imaginary Boys is for you, plus the title track is ace. Japanese Whispers and The Top are a mixed bag, but they both have a couple of great songs. It might be worth investigating Join the Dots as it collects together some splendid B Sides and covers.

Concert is a very good live album.

Sadly, Wish is probably the last Cure album that I really liked. Bloodflowers bored the tits off me, and I've only played The Cure and 4:13 Dream a couple of times. To this day I still haven't bought Wild Mood Swings. :chuckle:

If anybody ever wants some Siouxsie and the Banshees advice, I can bore you comprehensively on that too. :chuckle:

^ I agree with pretty much all that. Except for one detail. For some reason I (admit unusually!) love The Cure's self titled 2004 album. I just find it strangely hypnotising. There's something about the sound I love - quite raw, rocky, full, and almost psychedelic in places, like a band loosely jamming to some wonderfully intense and unhinged results. It's definitely not their very best, and is patchy towards the end, but it probably sneaks into my personal favourite list at around 5 or 6. Although why "Truth Goodness and Beauty" is only found on the UK release is mystifying, as it's one of the best songs on it.

But anyway, as much as I love the best of their pop stuff, its the darker, twisted, atmospheric Gothic stuff which really does it for me. So Pornography for the swirling distorted guitars and anger, and Disintegration for the slowly drifting synth dreams. :yesey::happy:

Epic fail. RAH website had a queue of over 500 when I logged on at 8:50. Got onto website at 9:30 and of course tickets had all gone. Other ticket sites sold out within minutes. Had a decent upper circle ticket in my basket on theticketfactory.com but had inadvertently added a £75 ticket as well. Had to delete the whole order and when I tried again the 'cheaper' (not that £50 to be miles away is cheap) tickets were gone. :(
