Sigur Ros are amazing. Agaetis Byrjun is in my top 10 albums and ( ) is not too far behind, if only because of the last song on the album which creates the best climax to an album I've heard. The drumming in the last few minutes is not too shabby either! I hope they come to NZ one day.

hmm.. i wanna get Von and Von Brigdi

i wanna get them too, but only really for the sake of having them, not because i love what's on them. i haven't heard von brigdi yet but von is just like 'ba ba ti ki di do' in that, a lot of the time not much seems to be happening, and they're just playing around with sounds. like a less-interesting múm. nevertheless, ágætis byrjun is my favourite album, ever, and ( ) is the album to listen to whenever i want to magnify whatever emotion it is i'm feeling.

oh yeah, by the way, here's a page of song translations: http://www.alwaysontherun.net/sigur.htm

Since I've heard Bjork I'm surely enamoured in Island. One month ago a mate recommended me Sigur Ros - album () ... and then I was listening it ...and was wondering how they could create so incredibly beautiful sounds...they come from deep in heart...their music is so true and when I listen it I'm happy that I'm alive :) I've one question... If anybody know anything about their tour dates in Europe?? :D

Spiral
27-04-2004, 08:23 AM
Maybe you search on google for the tourdates? ;)

Sigur Rós are awesome, didn't like them in the beginning but now I love them! =D

If you like music from Iceland you should check out Emiliana Torrini as well! =)

Yeh i just recently bought agaetis byrjun i think was the title. Every time I listen to it, it makes me so happy because it is so beautiful. It doesn't even matter that I dont know what any of the words mean. Of course a lot of the songs dont have real words, just made up words that go with the music. Very interesting.

Sigur Rós is indeed a great band. And their music is beautiful!
I have both their albums: 'Ágætis Byrjun' and '( )' and I like the first one more than their second, although the second is also very beautiful :)
I would really want to learn the Icelandic language, just to be able to understand the lyrics on the Ágætis Byrjun album (I know that there is a link with the translation of the songs, but Icelandic just sounds so beautiful!)

I don't know the the Fleck dude but Sigur Rós are absolutely brilliant. Ágætis Byrjun is my top album of all time... but let's hope the album they're recording now can top it :D And let's also hope that they expand their album tour beyond Europe and the USA!

Simone, SR have a very generous selection of downloads on their site, go to http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/media/index.html. Some of their best songs are on that page too.

Ágætis Byrjun is my top album of all time...

I think that's something we can both agree on. Three of my favorite songs have to be Flugufrelsarinn, Njosnavelin, and Svefn-G-Englar . Great stuff.

Njosnavelin and Svefn-G-Englar were both featured in Vanilla Sky. Which was a pretty good movie, but having Sígur Rós in it made it that much better.

I love this band too but am kinda falling out of love with them atm, i guess. ( ) "album" left kind of a bad taste in my mouth. There's just so much pointless noise in it that it's probably one of my most disappointing album purchases. The first 2 songs and the last song are really the only songs I can tolerate listening to at any time. All the other songs I have to be in absolutely the right mood, or i'll just skip it.

That said, they are amazing live, and their first two albums are great. Sometimes I think I actually like Von better than Agaetis Byrjun just because there's no sound wasted and it all has purpose. I saw them in concert when they were in St. Louis I think 2 years ago in November. Very moving and passionate show, the guy in front of me had to put his head in his lap b/c i think he was crying a little.

All in all, I hope their next album drops most or all of the gibberish and pointless noise and gets back to the business of wow'ing my ears!

I love sigur ros, someone sent me vidrar vel til loftarasa over MSN and I was hooked, so I got agetis byrjun or whatever it is, and ( ). Best songs I reckon are flugufrelsarinn, hjartað hamast, viðrar vel til loftárása, dauðalagið, vaka and popplagið, with popp being the best. It has so much emotion and meaning in it to me even though I don't know what he's saying, he's probably not singing real words anyway, just sayins 'you sigh' lots :) but the climax and the ending are breathtaking.

My drama teacher uses them alot in our stuff and it's amazing, we recently did a performance about heroin at the big youth theatre festival and used "Untitled 1" from the () album and it was, if i must say, amazing, the guy that had to do a speech over the music was almost crying...it was so beautiful. I love it when he sings "hopelandic" the most, i like doing it myself though it doesn't quite have the same effect...

I saw them live....was quite an experience. Lots of people around me (I guess the uneducated) were expecting and encore. As far as I know, they rarely, if ever, do encores. I was fully satisfied with what they did that night :) And I did actually pass them walking to the show, they were heading in the opposite direction and I was like, "hmm, wasn't that SR?" I thought, "naww couldn't have been, they had a bunch of girls with them, groupies?". It wasn't till later that I realized the girls with them was the string quartet that plays with them, Amina.

Anyway, it was a pretty intense performance, Jonsi was up there singing the crap out of his made up language, and I was feeling just the right amount of buzz from the liquor. Was a night of breaking stuff, too....i broke my glass and kind of tucked it under my seat hoping no one saw, and Jonsi had his bow break on him :p

Is Hopelandic even actually words at all?
I heard is was just ramblings, and what whats-his-name thinks suits the song well.
Is Takk all Hopelandic like () or does it have some Icelandic?

I'm not sure but I think it's only () that's in Hopelandic and Takk is Icelandic, you'd have to ask an Icelandic I suppose. I haven't got Takk yet, but I keep listening to an mp3 of Fonklagio from 1998 (excuse my ignorant spelling) practically on repeat, it's deliciously funky and quite unlike them.

I love their melody, their voices, their sound... Moreover, I've learned they're going to give voncert in my town in 2 weeks... so maybe I'll go.. They have to be better in live I think!

much much better live. they are great. but trying to compare them with muse live is pointless. they both bring different vibe. but of course i did cream myself seeing both of em live.

On topic, Sigur Ros is an amazing band. Listening to ( ) now.

Hopelandic features on all their albums. You can recognise it from the syllables, they sound like "you sigh so low" and stuff like that. Basically, if you think you hear something along the lines of "you sigh so low" it's Hopelandic. I think the only song to feature both is Hoppipolla.

Von from the first album is in hopelandic and it's that track which actually led to the "language" (none of it actually means anything, it's just gibberish) being named that (vonlenska is Icelandic for Hopelandic). Olsen Olsen and then Gong, Andvari, Milano and Se Lest are all sung entirely in Hopelandic.

It strikes when you first listen to them that you're listening to something very special.

Agh, that week was one of the best all year. :(Von is so cool. It's like, you hear five tracks of feedback and noise, and all of a sudden there's a track which could've been by My Bloody Valentine. It's ace. Nothing like their other stuff. Curiously, they've gone on to be sort of, less experimental sounding with each album, Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do discounted.

These guys came to my attention about a year ago and have since became one of my favourite bands of all time. For those of you who have never heard of them before, they are a fully instrumental icelandic band (in a less than traditional sense), they use a wide range of instruments in their music and instead of using their vocals lyrically, they use them as more of an instrument, using their own hybrid of icelandic and hoplandic. If you taken the time to listen to some of their music, don't go trying to understand what they're singing - You wont. As I saw explained in an interview, it's not the bands intention to use voice as a means of producing words, but rather as a means for producing sound. For those of you who have heard of the band and have taken the time to listen to some of their work, what are your thoughts on the band?

You can check out some of their stuff here:

I saw them (twice) last year and I'm full-on gonna admit during the second show I fell asleep for a bit.

Mind, I fucking love them...but they either make me fall asleep or trip me out.

Everytime I give their albums a first-listen I somehow am fucked-out sleep wise and it gives the whole experience a magnificent aura...I highly suggest it when the next one comes out.

Any news on when that could be?

Ryno
12-12-2006, 09:51 PM
Despite their being fairly well known, you'd be surprised how many people there actually are who have never even heard of the band, kuz. It's a shame too, as destructiveaesthetic mentioned, there's a rather magnificent aura created by their music.

By the way, destructiveaesthetic, it's alright... I listen to either their untitled album "( )" or "Takk..." at night, their music helps me get to sleep. Mind you, I love their music just as much at any other point in the day, but there is no better band to chill out to than Sigur Rós - Especially if you've smoked some weed.

To me Takk is their weakest album. Agaetis Byrjun and () crap all over it. I just found Takk a bit...well, meh. There's nothing on it which can even start to compare to Untitled VIII and Hjartaõ Hamast.

Thanks to Sigur Ros I'm also starting to get into Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky. Gotta love ambient.

I think Takk is the best thing they've done that is most like music. Apart from Untitled 8 (I like that a 11 minute long song that sounds like the apocalypse is coming is called the Pop song). () is good, but its a very different kind of good to Takk. And Ágætis Byrjun feels in a similar vein to Takk, but isn't quite as good.

I love Chinese New Year! It's so nice. And parents won't nag at you cos that'd mean we'd be nagged at throughout the year. Which means... You'll have exams throughout the year! bahaha!

Too far away. You gotta see it soon.

Sigur Ros are soon becoming my favourite and most complex band behind Muse. I love them. Knights Of Cydonia, All My Life (Foo's) and Saeglopur are my 3 anthems in life, they're so powerful.

Takk is amazing, as is Agaetis Burjun.

Love for the Ros, the best band since Muse.

Bought ( ) the other day having never listened to this band before. Beautiful! :'(

Are their other albums as good?

All of them! Agaetis Burjun is quite intense, Von is more early-Radiohead-like but still works, and Takk... is probably my favourite, just the most elegant and beautiful music. Plus, the ever-epic Saeglopur.

The reason I live outside Muse :) x

Sigur Ros' myspace bulletin. :D

Hello.

Sigur Ros and YouTube make a little bit of history this Friday (Mar 7) with the band taking over the entire front page of the site around the world for a whole day, becoming the first group to ever have a feature-length music DVD streamed on the channel, with their acclaimed 'Heima' documentary shown in its complete 97-minute glory.

All 12 available slots on YouTube's home page will be devoted to the Icelandic quartet for a full 24-hours, putting them before a global audience of hundreds of millions. The link-up follows the success of 'Minn Heima', a competition hosted by YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/group/MinnHeima) for fans of the band to create their own little version of 'Heima', using audio and video clips posted online. The 10 best entries, as judged by the band, will be featured on the home page, alongside the film itself, as well as a special message from the band, taking time off from recording their new album in Reykjavik.

YouTube has only previously hosted a handful of long form presentations, none for music DVDs. It is the first ever UK home page "takeover" since the launch of http://uk.youtube.com - the localized home page that allows for country-specific video rankings and comments.

Simultaneous with the YouTube promotion, the band will launch www.sigurros.com, giving away a free audio-visual download clip of the song 'Ny Batteri' filmed live in Reykjavik in the summer of 2006 as part of the Heima tour. 'Ny Batteri' is just one of a dozen additional songs not featured in the film that the band are intending to make available via the site in the near future. Information about the forthcoming album will also be revealed via www.sigurros.com…

Disc 2 is the raw performances from the film without interviews overlaid, and more band orientated than environment orientated footage.

I couldn't imagine watching Heima on YouTube. As far as I'm concerned, it has to be heard on a proper 5.1 system and seen on at least a 37" screen.

Sigur Rós will be releasing their new album worldwide the week of June 23. It is called Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust.

You can download the first track "Gobbledigook" and watch the video right now on SigurRos. com.

This is the official announcement sent out by the record labels today…

Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
(English spelling: Med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust)

Sigur Rós will be releasing their fifth album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (English translation: with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly), worldwide the week of June 23.
The first track from the album, entitled "Gobbledigook," is available worldwide for free download via SigurRos. com.
The video for the song is also on the website.

A pre-sale for the album will begin on SigurRos. com on June 2. A special deluxe edition of the album to be released later in the year — featuring a "Making Of… " book, a film and more — will also be available to pre-order on the band's website as of June 2.
A stream of Með suð í eyrum… will be available to hear on SigurRos. com on June 9. Lastly, a plethora of Sigur Rós goodies — exclusive clips, information on tickets for upcoming shows throughout the year, etc.
— will be available to those who sign up for the mailing list on SigurRos. com.

Með suð í eyrum… was co-produced with the band by renowned producer Flood, and was recorded in New York City (at Sear Sound Studios), London (at Assault and Battery Studios and Abbey Road), Reykjavík (at Álafoss, the band's studio, as well as a church in Reykjavík), and Havana, Cuba. Whereas Sigur Rós' last release — the critically-acclaimed documentary Heima, chronicling their free tour throughout Iceland — took the band to their homeland, their newest creation, Með suð í eyrum… is the first album in the band's career to be made outside of Iceland. It is also their first album to feature vocalist Jón "Jónsi" Thor Birgisson's vocals in English on one track (the remainder are sung in Icelandic).

Inspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Rós decided to adopt a looser approach in the writing and creation of their brilliant fifth album. The material for the album was written, recorded and mixed entirely in 2008 and is being released just one month after its completion. The album glows with the perfect imperfection of live takes, the sounds of fingers playing guitar strings, cracked notes, and a stark, upfront presence not found in previous Sigur Rós recordings, moving away from reverb-soaked guitar sounds towards something altogether more affecting. The record also contains some of the most joyous music the band has ever recorded.

Opener "Gobbledigook" sets the tone for Með suð í eyrum… with its shifting acoustic guitars, playful vocals, time signature swings and swirling percussion, while "Inní mér syngur vitleysingur" ("Within me a lunatic sings") sparkles as one of the most anthemic songs Sigur Rós have ever written. "Festival" is epic in its elation and scope, "Illgresi" features one of Jónsi's finest vocal melodies over a lone acoustic guitar, and "Ára bátur" is the largest musical undertaking in the band's career, as it was recorded live in one take with the London Sinfonietta and London Oratory Boy's Choir, a total of 90 people playing at the same time. The band also utilized the talents of their string-quartet friends Amiina, as well as a five-piece brass section on certain tracks, in addition to introducing the Mellotron into their writing/recording process for the first time on this album, highlighted on one of the most tender and beautiful songs on the record, "Fljótavík.

"

The spirit of Með suð í eyrum… is best captured by the album's stunning artwork, contributed by acclaimed visual artist Ryan McGinley. McGinley first met the band when he photographed Jónsi six years ago; the album cover was taken from a flyer for McGinley's most recent exhibit, "I Know Where the Summer Goes," which happened to find its way into Jónsi's inbox just as the band was deciding on how to best visually represent their new collection of songs. The result is a perfect synergy of the aural and the visual.

The tracklisting for Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly) is…

1.

Gobbledigook
2.

Inní mér syngur vitleysingur
3.

Still, it's gonna be great...right?

trust me. It's fucking awesome. Half of it is so lively, like half an album of hopipola's and olsen olsens. the other half, is like vaka, except more amazing. Yet again, SR have not failed to please.

also, it has a song in english. still cant understand it though.

It's been a long day, and I've only gone though it once so far, and I'm kinda let down to be honest... Their pioneered this wonderful, beautiful sounds, and as much as the piano monents create the same tension, it's lost its reverg guitar :(

It's just gonna take a while.

Yeah! back from Sigur. Way better than Radiohead would have been ;).

the venue was so small! it must have had about 2000 people tops (standing and seating)

They played a real encore! they came one twice to bow (lol) but the crowd still wanted more so they had to come out and play one more  beautiful.

They were really nice live. I'd probably actually suggest seeing them seated unless you want to get really close, as crowd action was pretty minimal, but for a bit of clapping and nodding. The studio recordings of songs like Glosoli and Hoppipola don't compare to how they are live. With most bands, I find if I don't know the words, seeing a song live is quite boring, but Sigur Ros must be the sole exception to the rule.

To be honest, when I first saw them, I was hungry and my feet were aching a lot, so it kind of ruined the experience. I would say the best way to see them is sitting down; either with a seat or not. I find it very hard to stand in one place for a while (at normal gigs there is jumping and moshing etc, so I'm not rooted to the floor with sore feet).
