Ok, I really want to get into this band and people are speculating to start with "( )", but others are saying another album?

Which should I start with?!

Obi
06-03-2010, 10:42 PM
Start with Takk...

It's the most accessible (even more so than the newer one I think) and more uplifting than ( ), which I think helps when getting into a band.

( ) is amazing though, and my personal favourite.

It took me many, many listens to 'get' Sigur Rós, but I eventually eargasmed on Von, and my current favourite is Ágćtis byrjun. I don't really like the newer albums as much though.

I feel stupid for not checking these guys out earlier. I'd heard of the band before like a few years ago, and seen their albums in HMV, but never actually listened to them.

Just finished watching their Heima documentry. SO GOOD! :D I Need to go buy the ( ) album. Untitled 8 is more than amazing.

atm I'm currently addicted to listening to their songs. So relaxing & beauitful, and just in general bloody epic. Not sure I agree with Sigur 8 being their best though - I love Sigur 3 and Sigur 6 I think it is even more on that album. I don't quite know yet what songs I love though cause I often put it on shuffle and don't check what I'm listening to.

I remember thinking though that Festival was amazing, and in general the whole of that album which has that song on. Must. See. Them. Live. :D

Obi

Takk. Pwitty but accessible.

Agaetis Byrjun and ( ) are both amazing, but you'd be going in the deep end. The latter is particularly post-rocky/atmospheric - I used to find Untitled 5/6 both boring and meandering, but now I love them.

I'd agree that Takk is probably the one to start with, since it has their most most bastardised song on TV well-known song on it. After that, I'd possibly recommend the latest album, which I still consider to be my favourite, even though it makes me the scorn of many post-rock fans I feel. Either way, I find that album to be quite well-balanced and a bit more fun.

Listen to the albums Takk... and Međ suđ í eyrum viđ spilum endalaust - they've got some shorter and more accessible songs on them (i.e. Hoppipolla and Inní mér syngur vitleysingur)

Though if you don't like long, drawn-out atmospheric songs I don't think post-rock is for you.

( ) is 10/10 phenominal.

Takk... is close to 10/10 at some points - Gong, Saeglopur, Hoppipolla etc are amazing but it's inconsistent.

Agaetis Byrjun is pretty much consistent 9/10 all the way through, and so probably their most cohesive album, and the best for many.

The new one (don't ask me to say it ) is decent imo, but doesn't sound much like the Sigur Rós we know and love.

The first one is crap.

I listened to () and while I did like it, I still find it nowhere near Agaetis Byrjun's untouchable brilliance. I imagine Agaetis Byrjun as if someone tried to compress human emotion into audio format and succeeded. () is a lot less dimensional and if it was by anyone else but Sigur Ros I would dub it amazing. But for now, it's simply a good album. Agaetis Byrjun, on the other hand, is a stunning album, which is probably in my top 10 favorites of all time.

alright, I've progressed through Takk... and Agaetis Byrjun (loved them both obviously). Which album should I get next? :)
Von isn't that good and Međ suđ í eyrum viđ spilum endalaust is a bit of a stylistic change so ( ) would definitely be the best one to listen to next. It's probably their best imo

Međ suđ í eyrum viđ spilum endalaust is definitely worth listening to though

Very worth it IMO because it is still everything great about Sigur Ros but condensed a bit. (without losing said Sigur Ros qualities.) Be interesting what new material they will (eventually) release.

It just opened in the indie theater (that serves alcohol :awesome:) yesterday. I won't be able to see it until next weekend but I'm excited.

Not being that into Sigur Ros, I have to say that the whole concept of Inni Sounds pretty pretentious...
The film's atmosphere is enhanced by Morisset's re-filming of the original digital footage on 16mm, which was then re-filmed again, sometimes through prisms and other found objects, allowing Inni to look and feel like something recovered from the past. Interspersed with this is archival footage drawn from the band's previous decade, dating back as far as 1998. This juxtaposition gives viewers the full scope of Sigur Rós' origins, evolution, originality and influence. as a film student, I have to be a pretentious prick... but this seems over the top for a concert film.

Good interview here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/nov/10/inni-sigur-ros

As you can see in the comments, you're not the only one to put Sigur Ros and 'pretentious' in the same sentence. The one doing it there is a bit odd though.

Mm, I try and be open minded about everything, and I do get the whole point of it. It might be really good, but until I see it, I still think I'd prefer a more conventional SR concert video... Hence asking what people here thought of it :p

There's a screening of Inni within 30 miles of me, did not expect that. On a school night though. Hmm.

Can't go after all :indiff: I'll just get the Blu-ray then.

The DVD is amazing. I remember the performance of Hafsol when I saw them in Sydney in 2008 and it brought back memories seeing it on DVD. The double CD is also a great recording.

It's worth stating that they are not headlining. I'm hoping they play a few other European festivals where they will headline just for the fact that I'd rather get a full-length set (or as close to one as possible).

Seriously though, that Bestival lineup is boss right now.

Sadly, Bestival will be their only UK show in 2012 (so, I guess US-Canada/Australia/Asia tour first in 2012 then Europe in 2013?)

And new album in spring (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=is&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.visir.is%2Fny-plata-sigur-rosar-kemur-ut-i-vor%2Farticle%2F2012702079977&act=url) :)

New album is beautiful. I love it though it does drag a bit with tracks 5 and 6, too long of an ambient section in the middle there. Still fantastic though, best track is definitely Varud.
