I am surprised there is not a thread that I could find about this film!
I watched it on DVD last night, after having watched it many times, & I do trully love it. I love the imagery used in it & the fact it has more than one thing to say for itself. The parallels with paradise are fairly clever, though obvious at points, as are those with To Kill A Mockingbird for those who have seen the film version. An excellent demonstration of conformism at it's worst & best.
It could have been an atrocious film, given the actual plot, yet it wasn't. It's quite moving.

Aye, it's one of my favorites. I think Jeff Daniels is an incredibly underrated actor. Did you ever see him in the Squid and the Whale? He played a pretentious self-centered dick to perfection without being over the top about it.

No, I haven't seen that.
I do think his performance is one of the better ones in the film along with the totally underrated William H. Macy. <3 that man.

William H. Macy is really hit or miss for me. He was great in that movie and Fargo, but then I saw this one movie he did called.....the Cooler, I think. And I just didn't buy it.
But yes, Pleasantville is lovely. I love the conversation he has with his mom at the end, telling her there's no right house and car and it seems to comfort her a little bit. Then the bench scene at the end. It's one of those movies I'd watch with my kids if I ever have kids.

Great, beautiful and deceptively deep film about the loss of innocence / meaning of being unique and straying from the norm.

I thought, always have, there was something strange between David & the mother in Pleasantville. Something very strange & I always noticed it every time I watched it. Maybe David, rather than Bud, was attracted to her. :erm:
Aw, glad i'm not alone on this film - think it's brillianttt.
Really, REALLY underrated IMO.
