Starlight. It is always high on dutch charts, and I always think of people who chose the song that they don't really know Muse. If you choose Muse, you shouldn't pick such a easy, poppy song.

Thinking this made me underrate Starlight. I still think the above is true, but I rediscovered it is still a good song.

it should be Ruled by Secrecy now
couldn't get it for quite a long time, but at some point it just clicked (must have been that time when I listened to it in full darkness at smth like half past midnight :D)
and Hoodoo as well - amazing lyrics
oh, and SfA live, though I'm still not in love with the studio version really

Are me and you the same person?? Those are like the same three songs I've heard almost every day for the past year. Even down to the live version of SFA as I agree the album version doesn't match up.

I actually completely agree about the connection thing. It doesn't make me feel anything. I still like it, but not like a lot of Muse songs.

It's a good song, and it would be incredible live I'm sure. But most muse songs have something in the melody which makes me really connect with them and for lack of a better expression feel some strong emotion. MK Ultra doesnt do that for me

I keep asking myself the same question.

The only problem I have with T2L is the order of the songs, I like all songs (and I love most of them). The same can't happen with BH&R for me :( anyway, I don't think it actually has much cohesiveness, apart from the last three songs (if Starlight wasn't there, TaB > SBH > MoTP could have been cohesive too). But as a whole, nope.

I think BHAR is to an extend well-structured.
TAB-Opener
Starlght -> MotP: pop sequence
SP and Invinceble: soft ballads /interlude
Assassin - KoC "western" theme

Songs like Starlight, Invincible and Exo-Politics (still nowhere near to Muse's best work) grew on me and work in the context of the album.

We are quite off-topic.
Yes, the transition is not good.
Apparently Muse like to put two completely different songs next to each other. Supremacy - Madness, Stockholm Syndrome - FAWY Just for the sake of showing that they are eclectic. Seriously they don't need to do that all the time. :chuckle:

"well-structured to an extend"
I just wanted to say that there are in fact distinguishable parts.

"Western theme" mainly because of KoC and I didn't find a better word. :p

In fairness though, Supremacy > Madness works at least sort of well because of how Supremacy ends (fade out/tremelo effect) and Absolution is full of bad flow (their worst flowing album IMO). I get what you mean though, there has been a few times where they've followed up a really heavy song with an acoustic/pretty soft song.

OT: Been listening to a lot of Assassin and Exo-Politics again recently. God, I bloody love those songs.

Nope. Quite a few incredible songs, but it flows horribly and it's horribly produced. Still a great album.

I always thought that BHAR was horribly produced. But yesterday and downloaded Audacity and inspected every single album I have and the Depeche Mode 2006/2007 (2003 101 remaster) remasters are by far the worst fucking masters ever. Complete fucking brickwalls and they even fucked up the remaster by skiping some of the sounds. Seriously, there isn't any other album that has been remastered worse.
BH&R >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> T2L. Even if it only had the last three songs, it'd still be better than T2L by miles.

On topic: Yes, I also rediscovered the awesomeness of Hoodoo by listening to the vinyl rip of BHAR, it's still fucking brickwalled but a lot clearer. Trust me, get one and go listen to Hoodoo adn you'll be blown away.

Mention of Host in another thread got me listening to it. Yeah, the beginning in particular has resemblance to House of the Rising Sun and some parts have some of Matt's best Thom Yorke-mannerisms but there is something appealing about it...in particular since the last song before I listened to was Survival.

MotP. Kind of taken it for granted. My third pair of nice Sennheisers recently died on me (I think that's gonna be the end of that affair) and I have found one nice thing to say about iPod earphones- the production issues don't really register when using them. Then again, good production's also lost on you when using them.

Back on point though, I've fallen back in love with MotP :)

I will have to say Undisclosed Desires. I always loved the song, but it actually wasn't until today that I really thought about it and realized what all it meant. That's also when I realize "wow... This is a perfect song to how I feel about my ex and what I wanted to do for her". That is the main one, but I also came back to Panic Station and Resistance. Two songs I forgot how much I loved :).

Recently discovered Dead Star. What a great song!

I have it both on the Hullabaloo cd and I bought a few MP3 singles from the Muse store to round out some singles/b-sides I was missing. So I picked up Dead Star/In Your World.

I'm kind of sad that I got into Muse later (being in the US) and will likely never get to hear it live in a concert. At least I have Hullabaloo and some YouTube videos to at least give me the experience if I can't hear it in person at a show.

I actually didn't like ConScience upon first listening to it, and just ignored it from there on out. One day, I craved it like chocolate, and it's been like that for me ever since.
The song sounds like the way the world swelling and crashing down around you would probably sound...

HCM I do relate to well when I'm sad, having relationship problems, and it's more likely to be something that makes me feel sad listening to. ConScience is definately depression, for me.

I like replacing the opening guitar bit 10 seconds in with People of the Sun like Matt used to, I find it spices it up a little.
Can understand why you'd find it boring though considering there's no guitar in the verses and the chorus is only powerchords.
Plus, after the second chorus I love playing that riff, and then there's the solo which isn't too difficult, and I'll always attempt a shuffle dance when doing that! :D

Even though the album is only from 2009, for some reason it evokes this feeling of nostalgia for me. Maybe it's the fact that the whole album has this dreamy, very classic 'animated' sound to it.

It's been a while since I've listened to the album all the way through, (in fact, I'm not entirely sure I ever REALLY got to appreciate it, as I purchased it at the same time as "Origin of Symmetry", which I was then immediately obsessed with...) so when I decided to take the time to sit down and really enjoy each track a few days ago, I found I liked songs I normally found myself skipping over like "Fillip" and "Sober".

Take a Bow. Such an amazing song. I would love if they added this to the rotation during a 2nd Law show. I discovered Muse during the songs they had in Guitar Hero and Rock Band and only got to see them live this past March. Any time they are on tour and have a show in Detroit I'm going to be there. I hope that if they have a 2nd leg tour they hit Detroit again.

I'm jealous of the 2nd Toronto night as they got to hear Dead Star live which is another awesome song that I recently discovered. At least I have YouTube for live videos and I have HAARP live CD/DVD that I can watch any time.

I'm having to watch youtube vids of live performances to figure out what Matt plays in the solo, seeing as the sheet music is a sucky simplified version :(

I have read that the solo as written in the 'Best of Piano Sheet Book' from the Muse shop is actually incorrect.

Instead of live performances, search for; Ruled by Secrecy tutorial' on youtube, I think you will have more luck with that, than trying to follow and copy matt's magical fingers.

edit; I just did the above myself, this looks good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHMkAZ7jVM4. And by good I mean potentially useful for you. Personally, after watching it a was like 'fuck that..' (I'm quite useless)

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed watching your top 30, thanks for making it :D I got worried when Citizen Erased wasn't there, but was excited when it was no.1;)

Ruled by Secrecy, learning it on piano now (even found a setting on my digital piano thats sounds just like it).

I'm having to watch youtube vids of live performances to figure out what Matt plays in the solo, seeing as the sheet music is a sucky simplified version :(
What I do, I don't know if it's accurate, is to play the same notes on the left hand as the sheet music tells me to, but instead of just playing the chord once, I play it in the same rhythm as the right hand, and changing the chord to whatever the right hand is playing.

Might sound confusing, so I'll give an example. The second chord of the solo is a C, but on the 6th pressing (that's the technical term :p) of the chord, the G changes to G#.

The sheet music says to play an inverted C chord on the left hand, so I do that, but instead of only playing that chord on the 4th 'pressing' of the left hand chord, I play the left hand and the right hand at exactly the same time, and moving the bottom note of the left hand chord from G to G# at the same time as I make the top note of the right hand chord do the same thing.

Repeat that for all the chords and their respective note changes, and I hope I didn't make that too confusing for you :chuckle:

Uprising has a great groove, damn.

I wish the album version were the version with the extended outro + We are the Universe intro. :(

I'm actually looking at the official Muse Pianobook, but yes there are a few weird bits in it. Thanks for the link :) What Matt does isn't as hard as you might think, you just gotta know where to go (so to speak) and get there fast enough!

Yeah I know what you mean, and I've been doing that but the perfectionist in me wants it to be exactly the same as Matt

Not only that, there's a few small changes in the 3rd chorus that they were too lazy to include.

City of Delusion. It's one of Muse songs that I listen to very rarely and then it sounds reeeally beautiful after quite a long time.

No worries. Yeah, I have found that with Sunburn (I'm learning it, and Explorers, at the moment) the biggest problem is just not tripping over my fingers when I play in time (as opposed to extreme slow-mo).

Yes there is. Last falsetto scream. There's lots of notes in there, one of them's G#5.
Oh Nipso, are you EVER right about notes?

In other news: Blackout. Never thought it wasn't awesome, just hadn't listened to it in a while and damn it's good.

Not my fault the scream's pitchy :phu:

Anyway, once I pitch notes I usually get them right, I just remember them as being something else :( (Big Freeze, Survival etc).
