View Full Version : Songs to Get Someone Into Muse?

I know someone who im trying to get into Muse, and I need some help deciding on 2 or 3 songs to play them.
This person likes mainstream bands, mainly. Stuff like The Fray, Mcr, RHCP. So, I dont think im going to play them anything from OoS. Right now im thinking maybe Stockholme Syndrome, Starlight, and Hysteria.
I havent heard all of Muse's songs, though, so i'd like to hear from you guys.

Time is Running Out, Plug in Baby, and Starlight. Then maybe they can start liking music that's, you know, good.

Stockholm Syndrome and Hysteria are definitely the way to go. No to Starlight though, it just doesnt cut it.
I'd say one OoS song would be sufficient. If you're feeling a bit ambitious, try New Born. Its a long song, and a unique one at that, so its not for mainstream people at first hear. However, it is Muse's masterpiece and I have full confidence that the song would grow on the person.
If you think that New Born may be a bit to weird, try good ole Plug in Baby, for the win. It got like half of this board into Muse and for good reason. That ace riff and catchy chorus will get you anytime.
If there is space for a fourth song, throw in Bliss. The synth is more than enough to drool over, what more the intro riff. The lyrics are by far, one of the best ever by Muse. If there is one song that accurately displays everything about Muse that is loveable, its Bliss. On a side note, it's my fav song too.:)
Good luck!;)

it depends what they are listening to already.
SS n Hysteria are very rock ch00ns. if they are already into rock music then fine, but ya kno if there more into there pop music, get them in with starlight, time is running out, supermassive blackhole.
and if they like them move onto some heavier ch00ns.

Good point. SMBH would be an apt choice. TiRo too.
As stated, Starlight still doesnt cut it. Because no other Muse song sounds as poppy and catchy as Starlight, the person would be in love with only one song. Since Starlight is such an easy song to get bored of, the person may just forget Muse altogether.

You guys are crazy. Starlight is a great song.

Time is Running Out definitely...
I think New Born also. The guitar riff is just beyond cool.
Maybe Hysteria?

Starlight and Time is Running Out are the two that non Muse types seem to be able to get their heads round the best. When I've been at the old Muse evangelising these are the ones that generally elicit the response of 'I like that one, didn't know it was by Muse though'.

a friend decided that I needed to be educated musically and got my OoS for my birthday.. It was...like nothing i'd ever heard before nd I really didn't like it (a bit heavy for me at the time)
I liked Feeling Good, then Micro Cuts and so in playing that I grew to LOVE all the songs!!
sooo.. I recommend Muse's take on Feeling Good as an OoS cherry popper!

honestly while at work i used to hear starlight all the time on the satellite station and fell in love with that song...it made me want to listen more...now i find that song okay, no where near as great as so many other songs of theirs.....but it definitely opened the doors...

TIRO, Stockholm Syndrome, Feeling Good, New Born, Plug In Baby
Starlight would also work, but careful on using that one. So far it's the easiest song to attract people, but it's been attracting quite a few who'll end up being disappointed (and really, this song isn't one of Muse's best).
Or use Starlight and TIRO first, and once they're hooked reel them in with the others mentioned. =P

i think that plug in baby, butterflies & hurricanes and stockholm syndrome. i think theyre the best crowd pleasers, while still being great example of muse songs and showing all the different aspects of muse.
i don't think starlight or SMBH are good ideas, because they can be misleading if you're not already a fan. thats just my thoughts tho, but ive gotten 4 people into them this way haha

Plug In Baby, Muscle Museum and Hysteria
A friend of mine caught the Muse bug after hearing SMBH in my car last year. She'd actually heard many other Muse tracks in my car (we often work together) but not passed comment other than a couple of years ago when she said she liked their version of Feeling Good.
It was SMBH which prompted her to go out and buy ALL the albums and she came to one of the Wembley Arena gigs and to Wembley stadium with me :)

I agree with what most of the people here say, go with stochholm syndrome or plug in baby :) those two songs should do the trick. Then there's also options like Time is running out and hysteria.

that is actually a brilliant idea b/c when i saw them live that put me over the edge ant took me over a week to fully absorb the show...and they only performed for 30-45 (?) minutes...and then i bought all their cd's and was a very happy girl!

OMFG! Yesterday's setlist had 19 songs, all of which were awesome!
S4A!
Sunburn!
Muscle Museum!
Unintended!
BLISS(ext.)!
TaB as an opener! KoC as a closer!
WTF that setlist is twice as good as Wembley's had been! Fking 3 Showbiz songs!! OMFG!! And Bliss finally returns!
I KNOW THIS IS THE WRONG THREAD BUT I HAPPENED TO BE CHECKING MUSEWIKI FOR THE SETLIST FOR MOSCOW AND......
OMG those Russians are damn lucky bastards. I'd kill to get a set like that. It was the set that many had anticipated for the Wembley shows! The only slight let-down was no Citizen Erased for the Russians but the presence of all the other ace songs more than made up for that!!
RUSSIANS YOU LUCKY DOGS!!

Well, our dear Clunge did suggest this brilliant song. And its an apt choice as an opener. Try rearranging those tracks in order. I personally feel that you should substitute Time is Running Out for Bliss. But then again, its entirely your opinion. So, it should look like this.
1. Intro + Apoc. Please
2. Hysteria
3. New Born
4. Plug in Baby
5. Bliss
Would have made a damn good 5 song setlist too.;)

The last time I made a CD for a friend who hadn't heard of muse, I know they are out there, he told me the singer sounded like Thom Yorke. I couldn't really explain how mad I was; being we work together we must stay profesional.
So, since then I've given up on "introducing" people to Muse. I'm more, if you don't know Muse, you don't exist hahah, okay maybe too harsh, but you are obviously dealing with someone who is not into music enough to worry about. Weird though, he knew the lead singer of Radiohead??
Oh, and the mixed disc had most of what has been covered from OoS to BH&R.

Im actually thinking of using that order, but substituting New Born for something else. I dont want to give the person both Bliss and New Born, as they're Muse's 2 best songs, and I wouldnt want to spoil it for them. Bliss is the more accesible song, so i'll keep that. Im no sure what to put in New Born's place, though. Oh, and im not gonna play them KoC. I think its a little bit too wierd for them right now.

i'd say it has to do with the person's music taste
for me, it took my friend dead star, hysteria, stockholm, time is running out, hyper music, citizen erased and house of the rising sun to get me remotely into them.. in fact, i didn't even like muse until i listened to the end riff of SS and then I decided hey, these guys are pretty good!
then BHAR came out, i went nuts and started listening to every song and it turns out, theres maybe 1 or 2 songs that i really don't like.

Hmm... A bit of a toughie. I dunnoe, the list lacks one slow song. Seeing as about 40% of Muse's music are slow stuff, I think you should add one. Songs like Sunburn, Sing for Absolution, Invincible and Hoodoo come to mind. You think that'll work?:stunned:

I think really almost anyone could find a Muse song that they like becasue they are so wide ranging and experimental, if they don't they don't really have a music taste worth bothereing with to be honest
even my mum doesnt mind Butterflies and Hurricanes, SMBH and Piano Thing and thanks to FIFA 07, some "chavy borderline" people like SMBH
one time i was playing muse and and some emo went "oh i hate muse, he sings like *doing a naff impression of Matt:mad:" and i was thinking thats called holding a note, rather than these emo bands or the chav and disco crap
apart from nutters like that you should be ok, try the more popular ones like TIRO, Plug in Baby, SMBH, Starlight or even BF&H, I mean trying Megalomania, while i think its a good song cos i love Muse, is unlikely however to get any Joe Bloggs into them, even if they don't like it, if they at least respect the talent then that should be good enough

Well that really depends on what kind of music they like. I used things like Unintended and and Starlight to get my mom interested in them. Then I slowly started introducing her to other things, and finally turned her into a fan! I wouldn't have gone through all the trouble (trust me, it took a long time for her to finally start liking them) if they weren't going to be less than an hour away from us at Lollapalooza. Thank God, too, it was the best show ever!
I know this problem i've been trying to convert all my friends for some time now. I think songs like Starlight and The Groove are good to start on. There a little bit more like a regular pop/rock song but also a song like Hysteria i think would be good to start with.

I'd say Plug In Baby is a must and Hysteria/Time Is Running Out also. They're mainstream without being stupidly mainstream. You always approach a new band through a couple of songs, often the catchy ones, and develop your obsession by getting deeper into their back catalogues/their less mainstream songs.

I don't want to sound sac religious because it's my favorite song of Muse at this point, but I think Stockholme Syndrome is one of the worst songs to play for someone when trying to get them into Muse. It's very chaotic and hard to follow initially. That's a song that grows on you to the point where you can't go a single day without listening to it.
Just speaking from personal experience, the song that got me into the band was City of Delusion... the acoustic guitar in the beginning is very easy to get into and the bass beat with the drums at the two minute mark is amazing.
Some other good ones might be Time Is Running Out, Map of the Problematique, Hysteria, and I even think Unintended could be nice if included with two other crazier songs.

Chaotic and hard to follow? It's a very straightforward hard-rock song to me. Can you elabore on why do you think like that? I am curious.
Anyways, lots of people tend to offer more accessible and simpler stuff from Muse to other people. I don't really get this, it's not like Muse are overly complex overall, but one shouldn't fear of recommending more obscure songs for other people. Unless the people are musically backwards.

I'd say because as soon as the lyrics come in, the drums do as well... when you're a new listener it's not easy to make distinctions between the two sounds (or appreciate them I should say) because you're not expecting each, respectively.
Not to mention the beginning of the song has a more "muffled" guitar sound to it in the very beginning, rather than the straight forward closing rift at the end... listening to the first 10 seconds and the last 10 seconds to see what I mean.
I didn't even want to say this because it's my favorite song, haha... but I'm just sharing what I thought of the song. The first time I heard the band my friend was playing the CD for me on Van Wick Expressway in New York City and it actually stuck out as one of the songs I didn't really care for... my how things change.

This is the reaction I got from a friend who found me on Myspace, where I have the video of "Space Dementia" on Autostart:
“Hey... LOVIN' that video!!!! Is that Muse? Why have I never heard that? LOVE IT! Heard the supermassive song on the radio, not bad... but now I'm totally going to check them out!”
I've since let her hear the entire OoS album and Absolution, and she's hooked.

It depends... personally I got hooked on Knights (once the song actually kicked in. At first I thought aliens were invading my computer.) It was because it was so epic and different from everything I'd heard before. For classical types I'd say Butterflies and hurricanes (this song made Muse my favourite band), for R&B-ers Supermassive Black Hole, for pop/rock types Starlight, for slightly heavier rock Plug in Baby/New Born etc. Personally I wouldn't start with the stuff with really high falsetto like Micro Cuts. That song scared me...

Bliss, definetely.
My best friend was instantly hooked, for some reason it reminded him of Pink Floyd.
Dead Star worked for me. Hullabaloo was the first Muse cd I bought and listened to! So basically, if you wanna get someone into liking Muse, I say take them to a live show :)

See, the thing about Starlight is is that it seems to attract a strange breed of Muse fans. Mostly girls who wear those tight white pants and are blonde. They think the synth is catchy and shit, and they dance and stuff. They think that 90% of Muse's other stuff is terrible. Ask them have them ever heard of Muscle Museum, or Space Dementia, and you will get a blank stare.

Well you said he liked RHCP...I had similar trouble, so I played my friend Hyper Music from 0:40 onwards, he thought it was kickass. Then I hooked him in with Plug in Baby. With any luck, it'll work with you.

i heard hysteria on the radio back in 04 and had no idea who wrote it but i liked it
two years later a friend of mine used micro cuts in a flash cartoon he made and i was like "woah that was amazing what band is that"
he told me it was some song by muse and i was like ok
then he used butterflies and hurricanes in another cartoon and after listening to about 2 minutes of it i loved it
so then i checked all of the muse songs out and blah blah
so yeah i guess you could say micro cuts got me into muse

Starlight was the first Muse song I heard - then Map of The Problematique - they had me with those songs - and then I went and searched for more of their stuff - struggling to find something I DISLIKE from Muse :D

This is how i got hooked, I heard MotP, then a month later Hysteria, then i made the connection it was the same band and was like OMG GIVE ME MORE!!! But I have hooked 2 friends INSTANTLY by playing on my bass the Hysteria Intro..(took me like 2months to PERFECT btw), then playing the song...Oh, and multiple chicks with Blackout and Endlessly, always works I swear...

I was at my friend Bronwyn's place (she's fifty-something, btw) with her friend Tina. We started talking about Muse (somehow ) and I said I had some of their albums with me, so I put it on. She said she liked it because it "had guts" :D She was delighted when I offered to burn her copies
So, anyway, I reckon you should play starlight, everyone likes that song :D
And maybe Supermassive Black Hole and Bliss. And New Born (best riff EVER :D)

"Space Dementia" and "Micro Cuts."
SD got me the reaction "I heard SMBH on the radio, that was ok, but WOW..." MC got a "I've never heard anything like it!" Simply put, SMBH and Starlight are too "pop" to make Muse seem distinctive - they're good pop songs, but they don't make the listener stand up and think this band differs from most of what's out there. The best songs from the OOS period (and Absolution) do just that.
When you're trying to "convert" someone, you have to give them a quick, concise reason why the band you're promoting stands out. Don't play them all the "good" songs you can find, or the ones that sound like everyone else. That's counter-productive.
Play the goods, people!

I would say: Stockholm Syndrome, Citizen Erased, Darkshines, New Bron, Hysteria, Time Is Running Out, Cave, Knights Of Cydonia + Showbiz.
But if the person likes really mainstream stuff though: Starlight, Invincible (blurgh), Supermassive Black Hole, and maybe like Muscle Museum or something.

hm well when i got hooked on muse by a really good friend all she gave me was origin of symmetry and absolution, so i wasn't educated from the start or anything...
but i would suggest Time is Running Out, Hysteria, The Small Print and maybe Plug in Baby. and if they don't like muse, well they're missing out on the best band in the world!!!

I recently played Muscle Museum and Bliss to a friend. She later requested I give her all of Muse's albums. I have so far given her Showbiz and OoS, and she loves them.
She's even started recognising the music on TV...
I was played Bliss back in the day, and that's what made me a lover of Muse

TIRO, Hysteria and Plug in Baby. if that someone still doesn't like muse, she/he must be into rap or hip-hop.
New Born
Bliss
Time Is Running Out
Stockholm Syndrome
Plug In Baby
Butterflies & Hurricanes
Hysteria
City Of Delusion
Showbiz
Sunburn

Eleven songs that will probably do the trick.

Good luck!;)
no way man. i've converted a few of my friends to muse fanatics and living in america i know how hard it is to do that considering anyone and everyone listens to mainstream talentless generic rock songs from like MCR. you have to find muse's most generic songs and absolution is the best choice for an album. id go with SS, TSP and Hysteria, TIRO as well. but things like new born will never cut it with its minute long piano intro. CE might be the only OoS song to do it.
if they like those songs then let them hear all of Absolution and then jump back to Origin of Symmetry. although it will take them a while to start to like them. Muse is a completely aquired taste, the very first muse song i heard i didnt like and after hearing it about 5 times it hit me.

New Born is one of the ultimate Muse songs. It has everything - piano, great riffing, an ace solo, amazing bass, amazing rhythm, lyrics that are actually semi-decent etc.

Citizen Erased might actually be a good song, since it's got an interesting hook in the beginning.
And barring that; Hysteria, Bliss, Time is Running Out, Supermassive Black Hole or Sunburn.
FYI: Time is Running out got me interested in them, but as soon as I heard Bliss, I was hooked.

Most of the people like just Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole and Time is Running Out. Quite a few noobs will inevitably think that Muse are like that thoroughout.
You could try and hook someone into Muse with the whole of Black Holes and Revelations and most of Absolution as they're seen as the mainstreamers.

From my experience, my friends who've listened to some of my Muse stuff who like Starlight, hate pretty much everything else...except for maybe Invincible & SMBH. But then there are the friends who can at least say they appreciate most of Muse's work, minus Starlight, Invincible, and SMBH.
But I think overall the best way to get someone into Muse is to show them live performances before anything else. Because even if they hate the song, they can't deny that Muse puts on one hell of a show.

I think it was TiRO that got me really addicted. I listened to it on repeat whilst painting my study - it seemed to make me work harder - and since then it's been a downhill slide into addiction. I've attempted to convert a few :p Its kinda sucks being a lone Muse fan in a group of friends
Ive had luck with Absolution (I usually suggest the album first)... One friend said 'I heard that TiRO, it was kinda cool' I needed no encouragement! Brought him absolution and urged him to listen! That was one down.
I also got one who had just heard SMBH by suggesting TiRO, Hysteria and New born... She loved them and the next time I talked to she had bought ALL the albums:D
(moral of the story? Perserver with the SMBH-only fans)
Haha does anyone try and be really calculating in their suggestions? Like suggesting heavy stuff if you know thats what their into or skipping some proggy OoS stuff saying 'we'll come back to this later... trust me you'll learn to love it!'
Although OoS is my favourite (atm) I usually dont use it to introduce people to Muse... I'm worried they'll get scared off!
You know what? Especially for friends who are into more mainstream stuff... it probably wouldn't hurt to introduce them to the albums in backwards order...

I actually lent OoS to one of my friends, and she adores it. Mainly because she's not into most of the mainstream stuff and I've played her some of it before. I'm giving her Absolution second, because I think it'll be her favorite album. But I bought Absolution first, then OoS, then Showbiz, and then borrowed BH&R. It was lucky I bought Showbiz first (I was actually scared about BH&R from all the negative comments on iTunes).
Absolution probably is the best introductory album, but I have a friend who only has H.A.A.R.P. (but it was for school, sounds weird, doesn't it? Neat project though) and the one I mentioned that only has OoS.
Or you could always do what Stephanie mentioned and play them SS at Glasto. You can't deny that's an epic performance. :yesey:

Or you could always do what Stephanie mentioned and play them SS at Glasto. You can't deny that's an epic performance. :yesey:
:stunned: I have much to learn!
I went in that order too! I heard and downloaded Knight of Cydonia, TiRo and Hysteria seperatly... decided I loved them and brough Absolution-OoS-Showbiz &H.A.A.R.P .... im ashamed to say since i had haarp (and had downloaded most of BHaR before realized that this was the kind of band i wanted on cd) that I didnt actually have a copy of BHaR cd until last week:eek:
haha , glad to hear you introduced someone on OoS!

What do you have to learn?
I downloaded TiRO, Hyper Music, Apocalypse Please, New Born...so on and so forth on the first day I heard them (mainly because I was looking them up on iTunes.).
I actually got H.A.A.R.P. last (an actual CD/DVD combo, unlike Hullabaloo which I WANT.) and I watched it the day I got it. With my friend. We made fun of Matt's random stuff. And pretty much any random stuff.
That's understandable. If I had gotten H.A.A.R.P. first, I wouldn't have gotten BH&R. The only actual copies of Muse stuff I have on CDs (like something you'd buy in a store) are H.A.A.R.P. and OoS. I've now bought OoS twice. :awesome: And I have like 5 copies of every song on it on my iTunes anyways (so...many...versions...).
Yeah, it was really interesting. I didn't think about it, but I'm almost sure she'll like Absolution more. Even though I don't.

I have to learn sneaky skill such as showing them awesome live performances;)
ooohhh Hullabaloo! I have that one to! In my opinion the live cd isnt nearly as good as Haarp (how good was haarp?!)- they've definatly improved, but i love the b-sides! After listening to them in my car for the last 2 weeks its like Ive gained a whole new muse album!
Shine is my fav... as you can probably tell from my sig :p

Shine has very good lyrics from what I've seen quoted. I'll see how hard it is and see if I can play it.
I loved every track on Hullabaloo ('cept Ashamed, which I don't really care for). It'd be a nice way to introduce fans to them, with the live portion and all, but it's all b-sides, and you've got the Gallery and Forced In, which are a little weird for brand new my00zers.

I've tried so many times to slowly turn my friends on to Muse. No luck. :(
I even made my friend this really nice burned CD starting with stuff like Starlight and Invincible, slowly moving to Shine, Unintended, and Sunburn getting into my favorites like Plug in Baby, TIRO and SS and ending with Knights of Cydonia since I thought she wouldn't really get that one until listening to all their other stuff. I thought that if I slowly progressed from more mainstream to their best she might get it. She listened to it maybe once to make me happy and that's it. All that work for nothing.

Hysteria should be the first Muse song he ever listens to. Pretty much everyone likes that song, even if they don't like Muse. Then KoC and Stockholm Syndrome.
Time is running out and Hysteria thats what got me into them.

SMBH because you cant NOT like it, especially if you like chart music. Take a Bow as well maybe? i dunno... all my friends like TIRO even though they dont like muse, so maybe that as well.

Hmm, I used Plug in Baby first time trying to convert someone. Next was Unintended... third was Starlight I think. Success all three times.

Judging from his/her music taste I'd say Plug in Baby because it, out of all of their songs, is the only thing realativly close to most mainstream.
If he/she has a good ear for music play Butterflies and Hurricanes or Space Dementia.
Hope you "convert" her/him!

She listened to half of Hysteria, skipped to the next song, listened for a bit, then pressed next again. T_T

I havent heard all of Muse's songs, though, so i'd like to hear from you guys.
oh i think that if u want to get someone into muse they have to heard hysteria, supermassive black hole, stockholm syndrome.but i think that all muse songs are great, and if someone listen just one muse song will LOVE them *o*

Resistance, Time Is Running Out and Supermassive Black Hole would be my first choices. I'd look into the Muse singles first because they may be more familiar than album songs such as Micro Cuts etc. I remember when I first got into Muse I realised I recognised Uprising, SMBH etc so that made me feel a lot more comfortable and fell into obsession (haha) with them a lot quicker.
So I guess Uprising as well.
If they like rock already, New Born/Plug In Baby definitely!

Some of my friends now like Muse because of me :D
One of them loves rock music and he was caught by Knights of Cydonia and Assassin. I convinced the girl I like to listen to Muse :p with Resistance and Starlight (pretty obvious, haha). A third one loved the Showbiz era.
I think it all depends on the musical tastes each person have, and that's a good point about Muse, their music is varied, you can show someone the rock face of Muse with songs like TiRO, KoC or Hysteria as well as songs with a pop sound like IBTY or Starlight. Other people who like the piano and strings and that kind of relaxing music would also love B&H or USoE.

I tried getting a friend of mine into Muse but he says that Matt's vocals really ruin it for him. He says that it's like his voice magically summons images of rain or something. I showed him everything from poppy songs like Starlight to more serious songs like Overture. The only song he seemed to remotely liked was, get this, Screenager.
I dunno I've personally given up showing him Muse songs because they just don't seem to be his thing because of the vocal style.

Dead Star
and...wait for it...
City of Delusion.
Yes. I opt for the lesser-known songs (except where PiB comes in).

Really, a friend of mine ask me for a any song of any band i like, she is studying piano and is not very much into modern music, so i showed her the video of NSC of youtube without Twilight scenes, and she thinked that song rules. It really depends on the person to introduce.
For me it only would work with song like NB, SS, Hysteria, KoC, Assassin...and in the other hand Exo's, USE, BH...
And that doesn't mean that those are my favorite songs now. My fav album is by far OoS and I think this shouldn't be the album to introduce to anyone.
The first muse song I really liked was TIRO ;)

agreed.
there I say, even if I agree that everything depends on the type of the person, OoS is a bad choice in general. yes I know, different people, different tastes, but most people are...you know, the "Starlight-kind". what I came across recently is that people new to Muse tend to love the resistance (the song). everyone I showed it to loved it, so I guess that might be a good choice besides the usual ones like SMBH, TIRO, Uprising, Hysteria.
the first song I've heard was Uprising, then Micro Cuts, these were the first two. I fell in love with Micro Cuts the moment I've heard it, but perhaps that's just me :)

Sounds like the time someone told me to check out Slipknot and said to start with Disasterpiece... won't deny it's a powerful song but not a suitable introduction.
That said, I got into Deftones after hearing "Rocket Skates", which is the heaviest song on Diamond Eyes, and Dillinger Escape Plan through "Farewell Mona Lisa" (rather than the usual Milk Lizard route).
