View Full Version : What riffs should Muse play?

Juuso
25-09-2007, 12:12 PM
I am meaning those little riffs they throw in-between songs are at the end, like Maggie's Farm or Heartbreaker. So, what riff they should play and before/after what song?

I think Bonanza-theme would be bad-ass before KoC.

The Used's Pretty Handsome Awkward riff would be an apt outro to SS live.

Pfft, don't main musers know any other riffs than Muse's ones or something? Only one reply *feels e-peen shrinking* :p

even though i think Queen is somewhat overrated, i think a interesting spin on the riff in 'dragon attack' would work well...either before dead star (unlikely these days), CE (marginally more likely), or SMBH.

just my two cents.

I think that would sound pretty dire, I don't think Kyuss riffs would really go well with Muse's sound, maybe apart from one of the riffs from Asteroid

Radiohead - Riff in Paranoid Android

They might never play it, even when it's an ace riff. Muse is trying very hard to stay away from being compared to Radiohead, which got them a lot criticism in the beginning.

I wish they would play the riff to Queen's 'Prince Of The Universe'.

What is the riff used as an outro to SS in the Abso DVD though? The one in Earl's Court. Is it orginal? Sounds like it.

possibly some Chili Peppers or Nirvana riffs would be good to throw in between tracks..actually I'd really like it if they did some improv an made their own riffs in between songs a la the Abso days..they had plenty of lil riffs that were awesome back then! Although some inter-riffs/jams I later discovered (from the magic of musewiki) was actually ripped off of Rachmaninov etc .. tut tut Matt lol.

They should either play the main riff to Slither by Velvet Revolver or that of Shallow by Porcupine Tree. They both are quite heavy and reminiscent of Muse's more violent, grunge stuff - Yes Please, Agitated, Ashamed and the coda to Micro Cuts.

Anything by Queen would be fantastic. But if I had to choose?

One Vision (Amazing riff from when the guitar kicks in, would fit Muse well I think?)

http://www.youtube.com/v/fsujXw267XQ

The Hitman (One of Queen best riffs, it pretty much speaks for itself! Much harder rock than Queen usually did.)

http://www.youtube.com/v/VRQgVF2aPVI

Hammer to Fall is good choice too, especially Brian's solo half way through.

Musemonkey1
20-04-2008, 01:18 PM
They should play some riffs from 'Ashes in the Fall' by Rage against the Machine. That would kick ass.
Black Label by Lamb of God would be another kick- ass one.
A classical piece would be cool as well, like the opening segment of Rachmaninoff's Prelude in D minor, or the opening bit of the Allegro Molto from Shostakovitch's String Quartet no. 8.

Also out of curiosity, why, when they play Maggie's Farm do they never play the bit on the next string but replace it with some harmonics?
That sounds confusing so here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysrlZlFkH3k) is the link. There are many other times but I can't dig 'em up.

Catch Hell Blues by White Stripes

bucket_

N.I.B by Black Sabbath as intro to MK Ultra and Electric Funeral as the outro

In the Flesh by Pink Floyd as an Intro to Knights of Cydonia :D

Patterns & Bomb outro from Band of Skulls would be epic at the end of something.

Floyd the Barber by Nirvana would be another good one

Killing in the Name would be epic as would How i could just kill a Man and Bulls on Parade - Rage against the Machine

Welcome to Paradise by Green Day would be pretty cool.

Then guitar outro on Boulevard of Broken Dreams would be pretty good.

A more bluesy rendition of Killing in the name would be cool imo

Been doing some research (lol) and Klayton is the guy who effectively is Celldweller, right? Like Jamiroqua and Nine Inch Nails? It's awesome stuff! I can imagine Muse trying this, and doing it well, but with no experience in this area, I doubt they could top this. I really hope they do at least experiment with it though, could be a beast live. haha, wow, we should probably stop talking about this, we've gone on quite a tangent, but thanks so much for showing me this!

Still don't know what to think of Celldweller...

I love the riffs and sound, so when his tracks are mostly instrumental I absolutely love them. But I find his proper "songs" like "Louder Than Words (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G3YzOV4pQ0)" hugely annoying. There's just something about it that grates in an incredibly hollow, vapid, radio-friendly, manufactured emo/punk-pop kind of way. It's like someone's taken an amazingly inventive and abrasive band, and then allowed Busted/McFly/Justin Bieber to do their song writing and singing... It's just odd.

You'd be surprised. At Leeds Fest last year, Hyper Music got a much bigger reaction/more cheers than Starlight. Obviously more hardcore fans of Muse were there than there usually would be but there were still more casuals.

Also, V Fest 2008 - the crowd goes mental for Dead Star.

Yeah, but they could pick a good riff, do the same and get a better result. It's not that it's a bad song, it's that Radiohead riffs (when they exist) are generally pretty bad on their own.
