Wow 4 whole pages of others bands and no thread about one of the greatest rock bands ever (fusion sure but rock as hell too !) : RATM

I ve just bought and watched the DVD "Live At The Grand Olympic Auditorium"(Los Angeles) and it reminded me how great this band was and especially live .

They were totally electric, innovative and powerful .

Tom Morello is probably the best guitarist alive right now and Jimi Hendrix is surely proud of a student of him like Tommy .

Also we all know the influence Zach, Tom, Brad and Tim had on a little U.K band from Devon with songs like "Agitated" "Ashamed" or "Hyper Music" clearly influenced by the Ragian s sound .

As for me, my fave RATM s album is the first one, full of strong and innovative songs such as Bullet In Your Head, Freedom , Killing In A Name, Wake Up or Know Your Enemy .

Also the basslines are wonderful and meshing exceptionnally with Morello s sound and the drumms are terrific .
Not forgetting Zach s insane flow (the only rapper i can stand and appreciate) which also mesh greatly with the "rock" s feeling of the rythmic section .

What s about U ?

Possibly my favourite band of all time. A great band but so much more at the same time. Tom Morello is one of the most original sounding guitarists ever and the whole live act is great, the chemistry is there, even though they never really practiced together.

I agree on the DVD of the final performance, but the DNC gig is the best part of that DVD.

Yes and i think that s also one reason i m so much into Muse too .

I mean Matt B is obviously heavily influenced by Tommy M and it shows .

As for the DVD i have to say i prefer the real concert, just because you have all the great songs like Bullet In The Head or Born Of A Broken Man (Wake Up is probably the only classic s missing) .

Seems we re the only RATM s addicts here :o

They most proberly are the best band in the world, the new DVD is great!

I'm currently watching it on my pc (now playing - Sleep Now In The Fire).

Damn i love how they were moving on stage, simple electrifying and powerful !

Zach was a total psychopath and he did know how to make a crowd really HOT !

I need to see those guys live again !

Probably my best live experience ever alongside Muse

Bah Audioslave rocks too and they rule !

Anyway i can see why here few people are into RATM : Zach s voice mainly (and probably the lyrics and political aspect of it too) .

The main link between the two bands is the rythmic and overall sound of the instruments (minus the voice of course) but since the voice is a huge factor on Muse s appeal (mainly for the female) i can understand why they re so few RATM s fans here .

Anyway i m one of them and proud of it ! Shot Back !

Don t agree ?

I do think Matt s voice is a reason why so many people are attracted to it .

I heavily doubted people are into Muse for the riffs at first (some are sure but not the majority) .

Hell, i know lots of people who can t distinguish a bass line from a guitar s one

Speaking of the bass, Tim is is really impressive on the last DVD and there s great shots of him .

matts voice is what makes him a lot more attractive then he is, but to say its only girls who like his voice more is pretty much crap.

I didn t say his voice was only attracting girls (i m a male and i m fond of his voice haha :D)

I've got two of his new tracks, the one with DJ Shadow, with the Morello-esque DJ work, and one with KRS1 and The Last Emperor called C.I.A (Criminals in Action). Both are pretty cool tunes, although if you're a rocker, beware, they are 110% hip-hop.

EDIT: Only the one with DJ Shadow is new apparently. The other one is old (my brother downloaded them, and he informed me when I saw him).

to me matts voice and the actual music are the same in greatness. i think it was definitly the music which attracted me to muse first tho- then i noeticed the great voice, i think that was it anyways- so long ago i cant remember.

yeah i thought that was funny too, the only thing is taht there doesnt seem to be much of brad or tom, i know they dont say much but it would have been nice to have an equal balance of footage of all the members.

Also, am i the only one who gets a bit sad near the end of the dvd where they show i think its brad and zach hugging (in a manly way not a gay way), i just reminds me of what we have lost, i got into them after they split up so i guess i didnt 'lose' them but i wish they were still around.................a dvd is great but its just not the same as being in the crowd, you know?

Shame you cant distinguish between a guitar RIFF and a large rocky canyon.

The first album was the best, by far. I think they went a bit downhill after that, i mean bulls on parade is really good, but in general, their other stuff sounds a bit contrived, like tom just found a cool new 'thing' with the guitar, and they made a song about it... their first album was incredible though, stuff like know your enemy, wakeup, killing in the head, bullet in the name etc...

I agree about it, thought Sleep Now In The Fire would have been a great song to put into that one too .

U didn t named Freedom which is a terrific closer to any gig of them (watch the lives DVD as a proof )

What is Tommy M 's greatest solo ever ?

My choice is Freedom s one

one of my all time favourite bands too.

first song i heard by them was in wrestling, they did the song for Degeneration-X. loved them ever since.

i always found that Take the Power Back was their perfect song. awesome bass line, and a solo that actually fit with the song, and didn't sound forced. lyrics were great, and was overall, an amazing song. they didn't really play it live, and it's not on the new dvd which i was dissapointed about. they only played it on the intro to the Democratic gig.

they don't play the song on any of their dvds thinking about it! bloody hell.

anyway, ace band, wish they could one day create something again, maybe it will be as masterful as some of zachs new solo stuff, especially the song We Want it All!

good things to come from the main man himself.

Their first CD was def. the best.
I really dig Morello's playing, it's simply so innovative.

He is right to the point, no bullshit and has these brilliant solo's once in a while at the right place. This guy has got the ears for music!

He also has been able to make some of the weirdest noises on his guitar... The whole strumming-bheind-the-nut is really his trademark, alongside with the kill switch...

Man, too bad they split up. I don't really like Audioslave, because the singer just sucks in my opinion, but that's a matter of taste.

Rock on RATM!! :)

I've only heard a few songs by RATM, but judging them mainly on Killing In The Name Of - since everyone I know seems to think it's shithot - they're quite astonishingly overrated. Killing In The Name Of has a decent tune, but the lyrics are uninspired to say the least. "Oh", they must have been thinking, "I can't really think of any defining anti-establishment lyrics, so how about we just repeat the same lines over and over again for 5 minutes?"
"Yeah!", pipes up another band member, "and we could close it with a load of shouting 'FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME', so we sound like spoilt 12-year-olds!"
"Great thinking - we're gonna go far with this one."
Jesus.

That song is amazing for it's power and the simplicity of the lyrics. It's the ultimate anti-establishment song because EVERYONE can relate to it. It doesn't take a degree to take it apart and understand every line. It can be used anywhere you feel pissed off.

Now if you go and buy/download/get a hold of the rest of the album and the lyrics, you will see that Zach de la Rocha is one of the best political lyricists possibly ever.

The best political lyricists ever do NOT stoop to saying "And now you do what they told ya" 25 times and "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" 16 times and then rounding off with a politically-charged "Motherfucker!". Hell, even Billy Bragg doesn't do that.
You said research some more RATM lyrics from that self-titled album, so here you go:
"Motherfuck Uncle Sam" - whoa, DEEP......
"You know they went after King when he spoke out on Vietnam; He turned the power to the have-nots and then came the shot." - hmm, yes, very political - except that Martin Luther King was actually shot by a crazed racist and NOT the FBI or any other Government force
"Ya know they murdered X and tried to blame it on Islam" - it WAS Islam, you idiot: he was shot by a member of his own activist group, NOT the Federal Government
"How long? Not long, cause what you reap is what you sow" - nice Shakespearean line, but stolen from Bob Dylan, naturally
"Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn" [16 times] - again, deep. Nice repetition too - saves us from even worse lyrics (is that possible?)

The best thing RATM ever did was provide the title of an album by the Manic Street Preachers - and Nicky Wire is a better political lyricist than Zach De La Rocha could ever hope to be. Richey Edwards was better than both put together, obviously, but he was less political so less relevant here.

If you want some really good political lyrics, listen to some early Bob Dylan tracks. The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, The Times They Are A-Changin', or if you like angry stuff, then Masters Of War. Now THERE'S a man worth listening to.

there is a reason the lyrics are repeated, there is absolutly no way you can miss what he is saying because he repats it over and over agin. by the end of the verso you know that the line is "some of those who work forces are the ones that burn crosses". rage are one of the best and most influencal 90s bands, without them we'd have no muse

Bold stuff is my comments on you're comments- Truth_and_Smiles

The best political lyricists ever do NOT stoop to saying "And now you do what they told ya" 25 times and "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" 16 times and then rounding off with a politically-charged "Motherfucker!". Hell, even Billy Bragg doesn't do that.

Don't be silly... He's not stooping at all by repeating simple phrases. It's just a different technique from what you apparently refer. The words he repeats and the way he delivers them, fit the song perfectly, making it a classic. If you inserted more poetic lyrics into the song, it would just sound shit.
You said research some more RATM lyrics from that self-titled album, so here you go:
"Motherfuck Uncle Sam" - whoa, DEEP......

Picking out 3 words proves nothing. You could say- "Arrest this man''- Radiohead, and criticise it for not being deep, but that takes it completely out of the context of the rest of the great lyrics.

I imagine there are conspiracy theories and the like that think otherwise to what you say. Just because you disagree with the lyrics doesn't make them poor.
"How long? Not long, cause what you reap is what you sow" - nice Shakespearean line, but stolen from Bob Dylan, naturally

But doesn't that mean Dylan stole it from Shakespeare?
"Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn" [16 times] - again, deep. Nice repetition too - saves us from even worse lyrics (is that possible?)

Again, it fits the song perfectly, and I can't think of a superior replacement lyric to convey the same level of anger etc.
The best thing RATM ever did was provide the title of an album by the Manic Street Preachers - and Nicky Wire is a better political lyricist than Zach De La Rocha could ever hope to be. Richey Edwards was better than both put together, obviously, but he was less political so less relevant here.

I'm really not a great Manic's fan, but I'm pretty sure that Rage Against the Machine's message will be remembered for MUCH longer then the Manics, which makes me think their lyrics do the job better.
If you want some really good political lyrics, listen to some early Bob Dylan tracks. The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, The Times They Are A-Changin', or if you like angry stuff, then Masters Of War. Now THERE'S a man worth listening to.

Bob Dylan is generally accepted as the best song writer of all time, so it's hardly a reasonable comparison. It's like saying ''why bother listening to Muse's guitar riffs, Hendrix is much better!!!!'', which is obviously stupid. I've never heard of Masters of War, probably because the lyrics and instrumentation don't fit together very well. But if I'm wrong, please give me a link so I can hear it.

Thanks for actually replying in an easy-to-read way and with arguments rather than just "WOW, RATM FUCKING ROCK!" However....

But doesn't that mean Dylan stole it from Shakespeare?
No, you misunderstand - I mean Shakespeare-esque, not actually by Shakespeare. That RATM bit is almost exactly like a Dylan lyric, but I can't remember the exact wording, so I won't put it here for fear of contradiction.
Don't be silly... He's not stooping at all by repeating simple phrases. It's just a different technique from what you apparently refer. The words he repeats and the way he delivers them, fit the song perfectly, making it a classic. If you inserted more poetic lyrics into the song, it would just sound shit.
I just think repetition is a pretty poor way of trying to get a message across. Lots of people do it - even Dylan - but not very effectively.
Picking out 3 words proves nothing. You could say- "Arrest this man''- Radiohead, and criticise it for not being deep, but that takes it completely out of the context of the rest of the great lyrics.
I thought "Motherfuck Uncle Sam" summarised most of the song pretty effectively; plus picking out a Radiohead comparison doesn't help 'cos I fucking hate them :D
I imagine there are conspiracy theories and the like that think otherwise to what you say. Just because you disagree with the lyrics doesn't make them poor.
Maybe - but it still sounds like they're trying a bit too hard to be controversial.
I'm really not a great Manic's fan, but I'm pretty sure that Rage Against the Machine's message will be remembered for MUCH longer then the Manics, which makes me think their lyrics do the job better.
If they are then that's a shame.

Masters Of War is a phenomenally good anti-war/anti-establishment song. It's definitely the angriest song he's ever done (he was only 21 at the time so we can forgive him for that) 'cos he usually stays fairly aloof, but it's just fantastic. Next time I can be bothered I'll transcript the lyrics up here.

I still think that it is an appropriate and highly effective technique when used in the way that RATM do, which (from watching live footage) builds up an incredible mood and atmosphere. On the other hand I completely agree with you in some situations; e.g 7 minute Oasis songs where they seem to endlessly repeat 1 chorus...

Oh, well Radiohead are probably my favourite band, so I guess we probably shouldn't go down this road :p

No, thank you. This is Masters Of War (he's not usually this vitriolic in his writing). Very powerful:

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Jesus.
Right chill, you know what its like when people only know one song, just like "TIRO", imagine if thats what you knew of Muse, or if you had only heard PLug IN baby?
And yeah, its not really any kind of mature statement to shout "fuck you i wont do what you tell me", i can appreciate that, but its still fun to shout along with it, and you really dont have to give a flying fuck about the message.
I mean, i got a RATM t shirt, made in el salvador, they have ended up exploiting poor brothers that they sung about and were so sickened for. So, take that lyrics as a bit of fun, its angryness in its simplest form. Its at least a nice respite from constant love and relationship whinging.

Err you contradict yourself with the lyrics statement.

Anyways, I love RATM just cos it gets me so angry, the constant repeating of words really sturs you up, saying that I dont agree with most of the lyrics and just like screaming along to it too!

I dont think RATM lyrics are great but just look at bands like muse /led zeppelin/queen, they have some poor arse lyrics but it doesnt really make the music any worse. Though this is different to rapping about politics.. hmm  ... still think RATM are great.

Kudos to RATM for being the most hypocritical band ever.

As far as I'm concerned they achieved the complete opossite of the political opinions expressed on their songs. By being signed to Sony, one of 5 major record labels, they helped the corporate machine to become ever wealthier and powerful than before. Big labels certainly don't give a shit what kind of crap they put on a record as long as it sells.

Aside from that, the whole incident at the MTV made them a complete utter joke. Throwing a childish tantrum for losing an award to Limp Bizkit is just funny coming from a band who appers to be anti mainstream, and yet MTV is the absolute main definition of mainstream. Bad enough is the fact that they actually showed up at an MTV Award ceremony.

The break up of RATM was indeed one of the best things that ever happened to music. Tom Morello was the only good thing RATM had, so at least he's now playing with a good band.

When I met Tom (!!!) he came up to me rather, polite and attentive, and listened to me rambling loads of omg's and 'dude...I so did an 18 page paper on Rage in high school...' and me acting all fangirly (which doesn't happen. I wasn't like that any other time, not even with Muse).

Opening people's eyes to what?

For those who have their eyes TRULY wide open, RATM comes across as a bunch hypocrites for being anti-corporate and yet putting more money on the deep pockets of Sony music executives. Talk about giving more power to the machine.
Artists who shove their extreme political propaganda will always in the end up showing what a bunch of idiots they are.

Their political message is as ignorant and politically biased as the extreme right wing country stars who cashed in on the post 9/11 patriotism by releasing pro-war songs.

It's not the case with every band, I just see vocals and lyrics as superfluous, the vocals act more like an extra instrument for me rather than a separate, I don't know, 'entity' or message.

Suffice to say, I don't pour over the lyrics for their meanings or views, it's just part of the instrumental sound of the song as a whole.

christoph
29-01-2007, 07:29 PM
i just find a lot of the power behind songs come from the meaning, or the lyrics. sometimes i find the music is second nature to the vocals (tool), where i don't really mind if the music isn't that impressive, as long as it is good enough to hear his message. muse have always been a band when the lyrics don't mean that much, because i find no relation, or they are just simply bad. matt's voice is the 4th instrument in the band (or is it 1st? ohh). starlight has been one of matt's few examples of great lyrics, even if most view it as way too soppy. i love it.

The difference here is that neither Pink Floyd or Radiohead shove down political ideas down your throat to tell you that the extreme left is correct and everybody else is wrong.

When you think of it, pretty much every single rock band has made anti-capitalist or anti government corruption comments in at least one song. The difference between RATM and other bands, is that the other bands tell you what's fucked up but they don't patronize the use of violence as the only way to achieve justice and equality.
For instance, U2 condemns the constant violation of human rights on their songs, but they have never told anyone to let their anger out and fight the system through the use of force.

I bought The Battle of LA over a year ago, but when I put it on it really wasn't what I was expecting (All I'd heard previously was Sleep Now in the Fire). Because of that I never listened to it again, apart from that song, but after hearing nothing but good about them and even Matt Bellamy saying that he'd pay thousands to see them, I chucked it on the computer. It's nothing like what I'd remembered.

The thing for me is that no matter how awesome the music is, I can't get past the singer if they're screaming (eg Mastodon, bloody good guitar but the singing ruined it for me). I just can't help it. For Rage though, it's not like what I thought it was, and it's actually pretty cool.

Rage Against The Machine discuss reunion
Guitarist Tom Morello says it was politically motivated

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello has discussed the reunion of the band.

As previously reported the grunge heroes are set to reform for a one-off performance at Coachella festival, which takes place on April.

Guitarist Tom Morello said of the reunion, which sees the band play together for the first time since 2000, "Everybody's really into it. It's going to be exciting."

Morello said that the organisers have been attempting to get the band to reform for the festival "for as many years as they've had the festival".

The star said that there was a political element to the band getting back together.

He said: "Is it a coincidence that in the seven years that Rage Against The Machine has been away that the country has slid into right-wing purgatory? I think not.

"It occurred to all of us that the times were right to see if we can knock the Bush administration out in one fell swoop, and we hope to do that job well."

Morello told MTV that although Rage Against The Machine are playing one show, he wouldn't rule out the possibility of future activities.

Rage Against the Machine's reunion at this year's Coachella festival won't be a one-off after all. The rockers have made plans to join Wu-Tang Clan for three dates on this summer's Rock the Bells (tickets | music) hip-hop fest.
Rock the Bells is set to take place this July in New York City, and two California dates are set for August. Details are listed below.

"It's definitely our fans' dream billing," Chang Weisberg of Rock the Bells organizer Guerilla Union said in a statement. "It's a tremendous honor to have Rage Against The Machine (tickets | music) and Wu-Tang Clan perform together. I can't wait to announce the rest of the line-up for Rock the Bells. It's incredibly important to put some shine on quality hip-hop. The opportunity to galvanize the social and political consciousness of these groups is undeniable."

The festival's complete lineup is scheduled to be announced March 26; tickets go on sale March 31. Updates can be found at Guerilla Union's website or the Rock the Bells site.

Last month, Rage Against the Machine signed on to headline the closing night of Coachella in Indio, CA, April 29. The reunion helped the festival to sell out 80 days in advance, according to the Los Angeles Times. Sources told the paper that the quick sellout and the ticket scalping that followed were among the factors in the band's decision to add more shows, but the four gigs that have been announced are expected to be the only shows for RATM in 2007.

That's despite the fact that Rage members Tom Morello (guitar), Tim Commerford (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums) are free from their post-RATM project, Audioslave, since frontman Chris Cornell left the band earlier this month "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences."

The Audioslave breakup rumors started flying when Coachella announced that Morello, Commerford and Wilk would reunite with Rage frontman Zack de la Rocha for the first time since 2000.

In addition to regrouping with Rage Against the Machine, Morello is working on a solo project dubbed The Nightwatchman. He'll release his debut album, "One Man Revolution," on Epic Records April 24.

it would be awsome if at wembo, after they play MOTP, rage walk on and play the little maggie farm thing, then walk off never to be seen again!!!....well, not for ever, just for that gig

That would categorically, suck.

Because it would waste Rage's present, if they were there, I'd chuck Muse out and see 3 hours of Rage.

The countdown begins...they're supposedly having a reunion gig in West Troy, Wisconsin on this date, and possibly the start of a full tour maybe.

We will get emailed on monday i guess heh.

It would be the best thing ever if they re-united and came to the UK. Mainly because my mates just spent loads of money to go to coachella and have been bragging about it ever since. The best thing ever. EVER.

TURN THAT SHIT UP, MOTHER FUCKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRR!!!!!!!!!

That would just be stupid to have two seperate counters for a single and an album.

The first one is the gig already, and the second one will be the single OR album.
