I cannot believe they don't have a thread :stunned:.
Fab band, and I think they deserve far more credit and praise than they actually receive, what with being overshadowed a tad by other bands at the time (The Beatles, etc).
Autumn Almanac is quite possibly, one of the best musical moments of all time. It should be our national anthem!
Some other cracking songs:
- You Really Got Me
- All Of The Day And All Of The Night
- Dedicated Follower Of Fashion
- Sunny Afternoon
- Waterloo Sunset
- Louie Louie
- Dead End Street
Etc etc etc.
Fans come forth!

Fantastic band, far better than the Beatles. Well apart from when George Harrison's writing the songs.

All I have is 'Something Else' (67) ... it has plenty of great songs tho, including strangely attractive 'Two Sisiters'.
Sylvilla looked into her mirror
Percilla looked into the washing machine
And the drudgery of being wed
She was so jealous of her sister
And her liberty, and her smart young friends
She was so jealous of her sister
Sylvilla looked into the wardrobe
Percilla looked into the frying pan
And the bacon and eggs
And the breakfast is served
She was so jealous of her sister
And her way of life, and her luxury flat
She was so jealous of her sister
She threw away her dirty dishes just to be free again
Her womens weekly magazines just to be free again
And put the children in the nursery just to be free again
Percilla saw her little children
And then decided she was better off
Than the wayward lass that her sister had been
No longer jealous of her sister
So she ran round the house with her curlers on
No longer jealous of her sister

Random factoid: that video they did in the 80s where the dude's dressed like a hobo and is wandering about in the underground...most of it was filmed at Holloway tube station...my uni's there so I always use it. the video often plays in the states on VH1 classic and when I saw that I knew I had to share it...sorry :stunned:
I've been listening to their Greatest Hits today.
They perfected the two minute pop song. Don't get why they're often overlooked.

The Kinks are a massive influence on a lot of bands. Ray Davies is a superb songwriter. Musically it's nothing amazing. But it's very well written and simplicity is often a lot better than OTT chord progressions and sonic wankery.
Also, didn't Chrissie Hynde write Brass in Pocket for Ray Davies? Sexual predator

Exactly to all that...
This is what I just wrote in my LJ:
Also, this appreciation of simplicity got me thinking about elitist music bores who think that for something to be good it has the be the most wanky, complicated shit ever.
You know, most of the time I don't care about your opinion that "the way they played those bongos backwards through a sieve in the second verse was a stroke of genius that really emphasised the isolation of the minor chords" - shut the fuck up, give me a simple pop song that I can dance to please.

yeah, there's a lot to be said for making simple music people can just enjoy without having to have a degree in music and a silly beard.
Still, that kind of thing killed off hair metal and it's virtuoso guitarists. Because eventually all the teenage boys grow up and think "WTF is this? girls don't like it I need to get some action lolz"
Ironic really cos a lot of us girls DO appreciate the more complex stuff. I mean, I like a lot of the prog from the 70s that my dad listens to and that's about as wanky as you can get

Yeah enough of this Yngwie Malsteem, Steve Vai etc bullshit. I don't care how technically hard it is, it sounds SHIT.

prog generally makes me want to kill myself.
King Crimson is alright but stuff like Rush, Genesis etc... egad no.
My music imp. teacher always said that if anyone in his band started going on too long he started removing bits of their gear. Was always funniest when it was the drummer.
At least Prog normally has all the band masturbating frantically rather than just 1 guitarist with silly hair.
I've been exposed to Pink Floyd and Yes (and in relation to that Journey to the Centre of the Earth) and Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds since a very young age. So that's why I like that stuff
Still, I have to be in a certain mood for that whereas something like the Kinks I could just stick on and let it play.

Pete Quaife, original bassist for the Kinks, died June 23rd at his home in Denmark.
Thank you, Pete, for helping make the Kinks the awesome band they always will be.
Rest in peace.

I never knew "Sunny afternoon" was number 1 when England won the world cup, that's the kind of trivia I really need to know.

Ha! Didn't know that either. Seems appropriate somehow. They've been called the most British of the British Invasion bands.

Any albums in particular? I want more Kinks! I've got just three CDs, and they're all big favourites. :D

Ray Davies the Ledge.
They had him at Glasto apparently, playing on Sunday. Although I've never actually seen him or the Kinks live I still think they're great, really like a Waterloo Sunset from Glasto that I saw on the TV once.

Indeed he did play at Glasto. It was good to be able to see such a legend as Ray on stage.

What's ironic is I don't seem to have those two big early hits that did so much to make them famous : You Really Got Me and All Day and All Night. Hard to believe. I think I'm gonna get the Kinks Kronikles set - that should remedy it. :D
